View Full Version : Chiefs Does the fan base for this season hinge on tonight's game?

I don't know who is on 610 in the mornings but I had to turn it after the drama queen spewed for about 5 minutes saying tonight's game will determine how fans react (ticket sales wise) for the rest of the season. He even went on to say tonight's game is the most important in the last 20 years from a ticket sales standpoint. His logic, if we lose tonight (to a team we know is better in the Chargers, my insert) then fans will hang it up for buying tickets for the rest of the season. We win and they will sell out the rest of the season.

I guess if we lost tonight but won our next 4 fans would be so put off by the 1st loss that they wouldn't pay attention?? Or if we win tonight but lose our next 4 just the opposite?

I don't think tonight's game will have a huge dramatic impact on ticket sales for the rest of the season if we play a good game and still lose and win our next few.

The next 2 games can be won. I would suspect that if the Chiefs were 0-3 or 1-2 the tickets sales will dry up.

Just a poorly coached team... Look at all the issues they have or had. Crabtree is a waste. Their coach is a mental pygmy...

Their QB is about isnt anything to write about...

They just arent a good football team.

So why all the pre-season boners for this team? Seemed they were the consensus pick to win that division...

I think that was an abberation is some respects.

I don't think they're poorly coached, but they might have been poorly prepared for this game, which is inexcusable.

I do think Alex Smith will be playing himself out of a job before the end of the season, but in no way do I expect their defense to play as poorly as they did yesterday as they move forward.

The game against the 9ers might be winnable, but we still have to contend with Frank Gore and their defense.

The QB play, at least, will be an even match up though.

I think most people with half a frontal lobe will not jump off the barely-populated bandwagon just because they lose tonight. It's more about how they play. The smart fans know that the Chargers are still pretty good. If the Chiefs are competitive, show some flashes of greatness (a good running game, some solid D play, Cassel not shitting his pants), and lose by a FG, that's one thing. If the Chargers roll up a 35-3 halftime score, the Chiefs have 25 yards rushing, and Cassel's already had two picks and a fumble... different story.

I'm not going to tell people where they need to spend money and that they need to buy tickets. But looking at the other aspects of being a fan, if losing the first game of the season has a dramatic impact on your support for the team, you are pretty worthless fan.

That said, when it comes to ticket sales, I can see how important a win tonight would be, because it might spark a wave of sales and energize the fan base. But a loss tonight doesn't end ticket sale hopes. At a certain point though, even if the wins do come after an opening loss, the season ticket sales aren't as likely because there are fewer games left to the season.

Precisely! It really depends on how the Chiefs play tonight. If both sides of the ball show significant improvement with a close respectful loss then I say the fans will hang on. A win will solidify confidence in both the team and fans even more.

If the Chiefs are hidieous tonight, well we are still considered the hardest fan core base in the NFL and as much as all of us will bitch and criticize we will all still watch it will just be more from the couch or recliner:rolleyes:

Season ticket sales are down league wide. Why? Close to 10% unemployment rate, and probably another 10% beyond that are people who are under-employed. It's hard to throw money away on something that's on TV for free. It's not just KC, its a league wide problem. I saw a lot of empty seats around the NFL yesterday. It's just part of a dreadful economy.

LOL, not with a fickle fanbase like this one... win tonight, and people will start talking about the playoffs. gblowfish
09-13-2010, 08:55 AM
If you look at tonight objectively, it's a division winning, playoff team vs. a team that won four games last year, and two games the year before that. The only reason this game is on MNF is because the Hunt Family wanted to showcase the thing that means most to them, refurbished Arrowhead stadium. "Look at our new toy, America."

Chiefs will probably be a six or seven win team this year. Losing tonight would not be a big shock. Winning would be great, but don't slit your wrists if it doesn't happen.

The economy is bad - but the NFL is partly to blame for its clubs lagging season ticket sales. They have done an EXCELLENT job, almost too good of a job, of promoting the fans home experience.

Why would a casual fan want to spend over $100 to watch ONE game (tickets, parking, food, etc) when they can stay at home and watch multiple games and be able to follow their fantasy teams and other junk for free?

I think you underestimate the impatience of the average fan in today's climate. While I personally see this as just "one game"...I think you're being naive not to see this as a very important game to the average fan in Kansas City. I can see a QUICK regression to last year's apathy if we get thumped tonight.

Of course, if we follow a loss tonight with 6 straight wins, then things can change just as quick...but you're seriously under-selling the possibility of the average fan screaming "doomed" after a loss tonight.

After Week 1, I think you'll find that the fans of sixteen teams believe they are Super Bowl bound and the other sixteen believe they are supporting terrorism by rooting for their "worthless" team. This happens every year.

However when you're mired in a stretch of losing and believe one way or another that there is FINALLY a light at the end of the tunnel, bad losses will do more severe damage in maintaining interest. An apathetic fanbase used to 4-12 seasons with little hope for future success won't care if they lose quite as much as a supposed "up and comer" that's supposed to be turning that corner.

I don't think this game is necessarily a "do or die" for the entire Chiefs fanbase or ticket sales. I like to equate this KC/SD game to a Denver/Cincinnati Monday Night game a couple years back where Cincy was finally getting back off the mat after a miserable decade of futility. The hype for the game was intense and was supposed to be the turning point for the franchise. To a point, it was since the Bengals haven't been a consistent running joke since. The Chiefs aren't the league joke yet (that honor still belongs to the Lions), but unless they use a game like this one that's on a national stage to prove their mettle....they just might be in the near future.

Plus, I suppose the economy would have something to do with it, I guess :)

They could feasibly win tonight, get the fanbase all excited, and then end up 1-4 heading into the Jacksonville game at Arrowhead. Lose that game, suddenly it's "SD was a fluke!" and everybody turns. It might generate some short-term interest, and it's national attention they won't get the rest of the year, but in the end not much hinges on tonight.
