A 720 ml container holds a mixture of red, yellow, and white paint in a 5 : 3 : 12 ratio. How much more red paint than yellow is present in the mixture?

20 parts total

720 / 20 = 36 ml per part

5 * 36ml = 180

3 * 36ml = 108

12 * 36ml = 432

Check your math by adding 180+108+432 = 720

So:

5:3:12 = 180ml : 108 ml : 432ml

(72 more ml of red than yellow)

AndChiefs
09-19-2010, 07:35 PM
Red = 720 * 0.25 = 180
Yellow = 720 * 0.15 = 108
Difference = 72

Saul Good

5+3+12=20

5red/20*720=180
3yellow/20*720=108

180-108=72ml

I got 180 red and 108 yellow, but the difference would be 72.

find x

then find how much red paint and yellow paint there is. Then take the difference.

If you add all the ratios you get 20. You divide 720 by 20 to get 36. You then multiply your 5 ratio of red by 36 to get 180 and your 3 ration of yellow to get 108. Subtract the two for your answer of 72.

25% RED
15% YELLOW
60% WHITE

then just mult .25 x 720 (180mL)
.15 x 720 (108 mL)
.60 x 720 (432 mL)

So....
180 mL RED
108 mL YELLOW
432 mL WHITE
