View Full Version : Football Matt Schaub and the franchise QB

I was just looking at today's Houston victory over the Redskins on NFL Primetime. I'm amazed by how good Matt Schaub looks. He's not just a fantasy QB- he made big time throws, kept plays alive on some intense blitzes, and led his team from 17 points down with 497 yards passing.

When asked, "Is Schaub a franchise QB?" the answer almost certainly has to be yes. He's improved every year and looks to be improving even this year. Trivia question: Who led the NFL in passing yards in 2009? It wasn't Drew Brees. It was Matt Schaub.

Schaub is 29, one year older than Cassel. He started only two games before being traded to the Texans in 2007. So he would have been 26 when they acquired him.

I'm bringing this up because he represents everything the Chiefs have tried to acquire in a QB since they flushed Blackledge down the toilet. Yet he appears to have fit the bill just fine, where our other attempts have come up just short or were embarrassing failures.

My question is, assuming Cassel's ceiling is not much above what he's playing now (given his two entire seasons of starting experience in the NFL), is there a QB you see out there that could be had as a Matt Schaub for the Chiefs?

Note: I WANT to draft a QB. I wanted one this draft, I wanted one last draft, and I wish Matt Ryan was there in 2008. But if Cassel is a failure and Pioli is still his stodgy stupid self and doesn't want to take a risk in the first round, what do you see? Is there any hope?

Jamaarcus Russel is still out there and he'd be a huge upgrade over Cassel.

Josh Johnson. I think he's a very talented player.

milkman likes Steven McGee. Max Hall and John Skelton are a few others to watch.

Matt Flynn is getting very talented on a Packers coaching staff that poops out great QBs constantly.

I can see him having a Mark Brunell-like career for somebody

I hate Stephen McGee, but I am biased. Im a Texas A&M aggie fan...

Flynn is certainly interesting

There's no one like Schaub IMO that's actually has some significant quality proven play time. (Cassel's situation was similar to Schaub's...but once traded, that's where it ended)

That being said, I think there are a number of backups that I'd rather have over Matt Cassel
Max Hall AZ
Matt Flynn GB
Tavaris Jackson MN (yes, shockingly)
Josh Johnson TB (really wanted the Chiefs to draft him)
Brady Quinn DEN
Matt Leinart HOU (coulda, shoulda but didn't...dirt cheap)
Vince Young TN (was benched + history there, maybe will be available one of these days)
etc

Matt Schaub is going to have a field day against us. 600 yards passing?

I don't expect our "much improved defense" to do well vs the Colts or Texans. With 3 rookies starting or playing significant minutes in Berry, Lewis and Arenas, we are going to get schemed to death and there will be open receivers like crazy.

While I believe that franchise QBs can be found anywhere, although most of them in the first rnd, I'm not interested in anyone listed above.
I do however think we will be able to get one in the middle of the 1st, but probably won't.

To add to my pointless post above, I would take a chance on Matt Flynn.

What happened to that red headed dude that played for Louiville that I believe GB picked as well. I just can't remember what came of him. That's not Flynn right? Flynn is the LSU guy IIRC.

I'm not sold on Flynn. I was never really impressed with him at LSU.

I am very intrigued by Josh Johnson. He's raw, but has a ton of talent. I liked Stephen McGee coming out of A&M but haven't seen much of him since.

Why don't you look up the number of drops he had his senior season. He's nails. Esp in crunch time.

You can go ahead and go by the numbers (which aren't all that impressive, anyway). I'll go ahead and go by what I saw, and I watched plenty of LSU games.

Schaub is the same as Romo. Great fantasy guy but not a guy who will lead you to a Super Bowl.

The Chiefs need a QB like Schaub, and a WR like Andre Johnson to compliment him. It's pretty clear you gotta have a QB and a good receiving corps to win in this league, we don't have either. I think Bowe is a good #2, but he can't be a great #1 WR without a great QB. We should have gotten Boldin.

I don't know that you can say that about Schaub yet... I think Houston finally has a very sound and confident "team" and they're playing well. They made a nice comeback yesterday... that says a lot about the QB and the team.

you are freaking high w/ some of these guys! t-jax? quinn? gimme a break!

josh johnson is a guy i'm very intruiged with, very talented and continues to develop despite little playing time. THAT is what you look when scouring for a potential franchise QB currently backing up another, the intellegence and motivation to develop as a backup.

Matt Schaub is so weird. I mean, here's a guy who was a West Coast Offense specialist that, somehow, developed into an aggressive, downfield threat as he's played with Houston.

I'm in the same boat in fantasy, i have all 3... living and dying with the texans, so far I'm living though.. I've watched both texans games so far and that is one dynamic team.. Schaub is a great QB and I can see them making a serious run this year. They're going to destroy us.

I really liked Hall in the two preseason games I saw him play, but I get the feeling that he'll get a chance to start in Arizona by mid season if they are looking like crap.

I watched every Cowboy preseason game and watched as McGee gained confidens and became more agressive in his downfield passing with each game.

He was drafted last year by the cowboys, but missed the season due to injury.

He started out playing tentative in the first game, but by the last game, he was playin really well.

He has really good arm strength, and played really smart.

If we were to make a trade, that's the guy I'd want to trade for.
