Alex Gordon is already putting down a marker for next year as this season a transition season that saw him switch from third base to left field winds through the final two weeks.

Im going to dominate next year, he vowed, I can tell you that. Not that this year is over, but Im going to dominate next year.

The words, as always with Gordon, come quietly. And, yes, he knows his production this year, or throughout his four-year career, offers little to support what, for him, is a rare proclamation.

Gordon has six homers and just 16 RBIs in 52 games since returning from Class AAA Omaha. He also has 45 strikeouts in 203 plate appearances while batting .233 with a .325 on-base percentage.

No matter.

Ive shown flashes, he said, but something thats bothered me is I havent been consistent. I show flashes, and then I go into a little bit of a slump that kind of erases what I did.

I just need to figure out how to be consistent and put it all together throughout the year.

There seems little doubt he will get a chance to validate his words. General manager Dayton Moore said Gordon remains a key component in the Royals future as club officials shape their off-season plans.

I think Alex is going to have a great year next year, Moore said. I really do. I think Alex is going to be a solid contributor. Ill say this: You can win a championship with Alex Gordon on your club.

Were counting on him to be that type of guy when were ready to win.

That seems to spike any lingering speculation that Gordon faced a make-or-break stretch this summer after returning in mid-July from Omaha to become the clubs regular left fielder.

I think hes going to be fine, manager Ned Yost said. Do I think hes going to hit .300? Maybe not. But do I think hes got a chance to hit 20-25 homers and drive in 80-85 runs? Yeah. Hes got a chance to take some walks and be a productive hitter for us.

Gordon sees that and more.

I feel comfortable in left field, he said. I was struggling at third, and it was taking too much out of me. My numbers arent where I want them to be. Im not producing like I want to produce.

But Im feeling good out there, and I think its going to come around.

I can only guess he means he's going to start wearing black leather teddys and a leather hood and start spanking Ned Yost in the trainer's room...

Cause he'll never hit over .275 for a season.

Dude, he's got to prove:

a. He can stay healthy for an entire season

b. He can actually anchor A position on the team where he is the best option

c. That he can be mentally tough enough to get thru an entire season before he starts falling back on his Minor League swing.

I like my odds.

True

Crazy, I know, but I don't expect the Royals to stand pat in FA regarding corner OF's. And, Gordon ISN'T going back to 3B, imo. So, what's left? Trade Belly Butler and have Gordo and Kila trade off at 1b?

The Royals are currently 62-88. They have 12 games left. If they continue to play around .400 ball, as they have for most of the year, let's assume in the final 12 games they go 5-7. That means their record for the year will be 67-95, just five games short of another 100 loss season.

That stinks on ice, man.

At least Daddy Warbucks Glass got to see a pennant winning team in Northwest Arkansas. I wonder if he ever made it to a Royals game at Kauffman this year?

Alice has been pretty good for about a week. Let's see:
a) What happens when pitchers adjust to him;
b) If he can stay healthy;
c) What he does in pressure situations where production is needed. Alice will hit a homer when you're down 7-1, but runner on second in a tie game in late innings? He never hits, ever ever ever. He's Hal Morris all over again. Who's Hal Morris? The greatest non-productive Royals .300 hitter evah!

Check out Morris' 1998 KC Royals stats:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morriha02.shtml

472 ABs, 1 HR, 40 RBI, but hit .309.

It's hard to be that shitty and still hit .300.
That's Alice Gordon, if he's lucky.

I have to admit... I didn't think this would happen. I expected the same old, same old from Gordon this year.

But he really has changed his approach and his swing. His defense has looked great. Really enjoying watching him play. Just hope he keeps this up over the whole season. I can see .290/.375/22/100/15 as a final slash line. Would likely put him in the .850-.950 SLG range, depending on how many doubles he hits.

Combine that with .320/.400/20/100 with Butler, and the Royals have a legitimate 3-4 combo for the first time since I can remember...

I only saw Gordon rarely in the past, when the Royals played the Angels, and the rare ESPN games, but his swing right now is as smooth and level as one could hope.

He seemed to have a natural uppercut in his swing in year's past.

He's much closer to the plate (I think someone mentioned that already) and he's swinging much easier. He's not trying to hit 475 shots to right center with every swing. Also, his hand position is better, which keeps him from his tendency to roll over on pitches.

And he's got enough natural power that even with this swing, he's good for 20-25 home runs, even playing 81 games in cavernous Kauffman Stadium.

FTR, I'm an Alex Gordon supporter. I don't think he's gotten a fair chance to showcase his skills and this year he will finally show that he's a decent player. But you people crack me up who put so much stock into 65 abs or 9 ip. Alot of you have came to the conclusion that Aaron Crow is the second coming of Jesus.

Gordon is having arguably the best or second-best season by a Royals position players over the last 20 years. Here are the top three:

WAR
Carlos Beltran, 2003, 6.7 WAR,
Alex Gordon 2011, 6.4 WAR
Jay Bell, 1997, 5.6 WAR

Dayton needs to lock him up ASAP.

Alex has had a good year. It's been his only good year. He's giving what should be expected for his high draft position. Dominating? He's definitely been better, but I wouldn't call him George Brett just yet. This is a team sport. His team has only won 70 games this year, and is in next to last in the division. He leads the team in OBP, homers with 23 -that wouldn't lead most major league teams, thats for sure-, and he's tied for runs scored with Melky. One troubling stat is he hits about 70 points higher at home than on the road. And he strikes out twice as much as he walks. His defense has been very good. So I'd be for re-signing him, and if it looks like we can't re-sign him, trade him now for starting pitching while we can get a true impact player for him.

Actually, the last time he was healthy an entire season, he posted an OPS+ of 117 (or thereabouts - forget the exact number). Which is a plus player.

He's been the best left fielder in the AL, by the numbers, and has one of the highest WAR numbers of any AL OF.

Pretty dominant.

If Gordon gets 500 at bats, I will bet someone 500,000 in casino cash that he has at least 24 HRS.

He will dominate the league standings on most strikeouts on 6-foot-high fastballs.

Also on lowest batting average with RISP.

Its WAY too early in the season to get to excited about Gordon or the Royals...

They havent completed their annual 20 game losing streak yet...

Alice has been pretty good for about a week. Let's see:
a) What happens when pitchers adjust to him;
b) If he can stay healthy;
c) What he does in pressure situations where production is needed.

Maybe I'm just a cynical jackass, but I'd like to see him do it for an extended period of time until I'm a believer. I put so much faith into him after watching his entire AA career thinking he could be one of the best players in baseball. I'm just not ready to believe quite yet...

Would be happy to be wrong, though.

ya, if he's still producing around the all-star break, then I'll be impressed.

But I'm sure the Royals will start sucking and back to the bottom in a month.

like he has ANYTHING to do with only 70 wins...

Alex is playing like the guy he should be for where we drafted him.

So props to him for finally realizing his potential.

But, as good as he is playing now, he was painfully bad in 2010 when this thread was started. So the criticism of his play was well warranted then. I'm just glad he's finally starting to come around.

Next up on the expectation scale, Hosmer and Moose.

Moose looks like Alice Gordon circa 2010 right now.

I went back and read thru this thread, which started in 2011. Alex was much better last year, and looks like he is off to an all star year this year. For where he was drafted, and the expectations we've had for him, he's just now starting to blossom. I think left field has done a lot for his career. He seems better suited to the OF than at 3B. Also in the outfield, he's now out of George Brett's shadow, and unrealistic comparisons. I'm happy for him, and hopes he keeps raking. We need his bat and his defense.
