Shawne Merriman is done in San Diego

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 13, 2010 12:54 PM ET
The Chargers will no longer wait for Shawne Merriman to get healthy.

The team placed him on injured reserve on Wednesday with a calf injury. They did so with a "minor-injury designation", which means its less than a six week injury. When Merriman is healthy, the team has to release him.

This will surely end Merriman's tumultuous six-year run in San Diego. He was the AP Rookie of the Year in 2005, and a first-team All Pro in 2006. Merriman has never truly rebounded from reconstructive surgery in 2008.

At the time, there was some concern Merriman's career could be over. He returned in 2009, but hasn't looked like the same guy during the times he's been healthy enough to play. Merriman only has five tackles in three games this season after missing much of training camp for a misguided holdout.

Merriman will find work again, but he's not close to getting a big contract until he proves he can be healthy and productive again.

Wouldn't that be great if on the same day as he was released, roidman found out Tila Tequila gave him herpes.

According to almost all Chargers fans I've seen, he was definitely going to go back to his 15 sacks per season form this year, lol.

You guys should be fired up beyond belief.

Jr. Seau, Rodney Harrison, Michael Turner, LT

What do all those guys have in common?

When AJ Smith releases a player you can pretty much guarantee it's a bad decision and he'll succeed elsewhere.

Go back and watch some of his film and defensive play calls they ran the last 2 years before you make assumptions.

He was still the chargers best pass rusher, drew a chip on most defensive snaps, has always been a potent run stopper, and teamed up on the other side of Hali would turn this D into a wrecking crew.

The reality is the chargers already have multiple injury problems at OLB, he needs time to heal his calf, they're now desperate for wins, and they weren't gonna extend him after this year anyway so this move helps them with a roster spot.

Edit: Oh yeah Drew Brees should definitely be added to that list of AJ Smith failures above.

AJ is an idiot who alienates everyone around him. Rams won't even talk to him about making an offer on VJ anymore even though Clayton went down which should tell you something. AJ is a win/lose guy. He needs to bend people over in order to feel has won. This whole VJ thing is a great example.

Also look how many of them ended up with the Pats? I don't know how I'd feel about the thought of the Chiefs picking him up, but Pioli had an affinity for ex-Dolt players.

Well I am sad to see him go.......Was nice seeing him play as a non-factor. Use to hate that fucker, but when he was on the juice/pre-injury dude was bad. Would love to see him become our "Donnie Edwards" screwup and land him here if he can be healthy without the juice. Who did Donnie play the best against? Da Chiefs.

Source: Merriman Recently Busted With Steroids
Posted on August 18, 2011 by Patrick Moran
According to a reliable source close to the situation, Buffalo Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman was busted for carrying steroids near the United States border late Thursday night, July 28 on the eve of Bills’ training camp.

According to the source, while trying to cross Canada back into the United States, Merriman was detained by United States Customs shortly after 2:00am. There, the source tells me steroids were found in his possession. He was not arrested and booked because from what I’m told, simply being in the possession of the substance is not technically illegal.

I’m certainly no legal analyst or NFL league rules expert, and I don’t know what, if any ramifications simply being caught in possession of a steroid substance will carry. I can’t and won’t speculate if Merriman has actually taken steroids anytime recently, but my source says he was caught with them in his possession.

I have to reiterate that doesn’t mean Merriman has taken steroids recently or done anything illegal.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available. Knowing the consequence of being wrong, I wouldn’t post if not fully confident in the accuracy of this report.

For the record, I’ve sat on this story for close to three weeks—and numerous mainstream media members I’ve confided in can attest to that.
