View Full Version : Prayer Request Lost a friend today...

Guys, I'm having a rough time at the moment, and could use some prayers for my friend's family.

A good friend of mine from Manhattan, KS passed away yesterday at 33. Survived by his young daughter.

Dan worked as a bartender at Auntie Mae's, my old MHK hangout. Dan was about the friendliest fucker you ever met. Always made everyone laugh. He was a brilliant man. The friendships and acquaintances he made makes me look at my own life as lacking and unfulfilled. His is a death that shouldn't have been. He still had too much to give. It's hitting me hard, as I see so much in my own life that will never live up to what this man has done. The lives he's changed. The people he's touched. It makes me want to be a better person, starting today. Yet all I can do is cry. I'm not sure why I want to share this now. But I would appreciate a prayer or good thoughts for this man that I wish you could have known.

I'll miss you Dr. Dan. Tonight I'm going to purchase some Amber Bock, put on some Tom Waits, and sing with you again as we used to do.

Until we meet again, dear friend....

To the Right Honorable Reverend, Dr. Daniel Wolfe Valentine:

We regret to inform you that your wake,
will take longer than expected;
a week, we think,
maybe more.
(some speculate months)

There are simply too many stories to tell.
Too many lives lifted, by your touch.
Too much love, and joy,
and sadness,
to be shared in one nightís work,
at our Auntieís table.

And for this, we sincerely apologize.

We apologize, Doctor,
for forcing you to linger here,
in this flawed and fucked beautiful plane
watching over us (as you surely will)
as we contemplate, discuss, and lament
a world, without you.

A world now lacking your Legendary Bear Hugs,
(known far and wide for their power to cure any ail!)
A world devoid of Dr. Danís Culinary Delights,
(coveted by chefs from gay Paree to Far Flung Tokyo!)
A world revoked of the Right Reverendís Ear to Ear Grin,
(proclaimed, unanimously, to be the 8th wonder of our world!)

Forgive us, Reverend.
We canít help but hold you up,
just a bit longer,
please?

Our world is hard, ya know?
full of spite and anger,
brimmed with hate and indifference,
so you can imagine how our guts turned,
how our hearts crumpled,
when we heard that you-
your awe inspiring kindness,
your laugh that lifted rafters,
your ten thousand tiny things we took for granted,
daily, and simply assumed would be around to
save us even for a moment from the harshness
of this ugly, wonderful place
-were gone,
forever.

Well, considering all that,
can you blame us, Doctor,
for never wanting to leave your wake?

But we will have to, eventually;

a week, we think,
maybe more.
(some speculate, a lifetime)

Love,
Your Devoted Fans

Pancreatic cancer. He found out barely a month ago, and it took him faster than expected.

A month is not right, for goodbyes of this kind.

Thank you all.

Awful. Lost a friend as well this week. Though our paths had not crossed in 20 years, I still recall him as a good dude with a big heart. He got into some bad stuff and was found hanging after a high speed chase with the law. Guess he thought it was better to take his own life than take responsibility for his actions. He, obviously wasn't the same dude I used to know.

RIP Dan

Yeah. I stop in Auntie Mae's quite often to catch up with old friends. I saw Dan about 3 weeks ago. Of course he was his old smiling happy self. We didn't really talk about goodbyes or death or anything at the time, just caught up on old times, laughing about crazy shit we used to do.

I guess looking at it now, that was better than a sad goodbye.

That was a touching remembrance of life taken too soon. It's okay to raise a glass and sing those songs and cry your way through it. Those memories of great times will sustain you.

It's tough to lose any EMAW before their time.

KCF, I know what you are going through. I lost a friend several years ago who was only 38. As a lot of posters posted supportive posts for me this family of your fellow Chiefs fans are here to carry some of your load. It sucks right now. But life has a way of getting you used to it. May your friend have an amazing journey on his way to heaven. Here's to him: :toast:

It is a MFer. My boss died of pancreatic cancer about 12 years ago. Found out and was gone in less than six months. They couldn't really do much about it. It hit him fast. He was a good guy. Too bad because bosses that are also just plain good people seem to be rare at my place of employment.

Hey KCFish.

Not sure we've ever met, but I knew Dan a little bit and am good friends with a lot of people who were very close to him including Jimbo (who penned that poem, I believe). I was sad to see that he passed, although I never really got to know him other than a few conversations about music, as Mae's is that kind of place. My thoughts are with you and those close to Dan. I hope I can get to manhattan at some point soon to see everybody. Hang in there man. He was way too young and way too nice to be gone so soon.

Wow. I can't see how we haven't met then. Mae's used to be my second home when I was going to "college" there. Several of my old roommates worked there... Big Jay, Barry...

We had a place at 1321 Leavenworth St., and most of Mae's would end up at our place afterhours.

I'm gonna be back in MHK on Friday for the funeral. And then Nov. 13th, there's going to be a big Benefit at Maes as well with proceeds going to Dan's daughter's college fund. Whether we've met or not, I'd be happy to share a beer with you if you're around.
