Irvin gets punked on his placement on Top 100 list

Posted by Mike Florio on November 5, 2010 2:16 PM ET
During his Friday appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, NFL Network's Rich Eisen shared a great story (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/danpatrick/blog/135541/index.html) about the NFL's freshly-unveiled Top 100 list.

According to Eisen, NFLN's Warren Sapp was upset that he didn't make the list. His colleague, Michael Irvin, was trying to comfort the perennial Pro Bowl player.

And then Irvin, who came in at No. 92, was told by NFLN producers that he landed on the list behind Chad Ochocinco (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=2544).

That prompted Irvin to forget all about Sapp and to begin loudly protesting the placement of Ochocinco at a higher spot on the list than Irvin.

Irvin then was told that it was a joke.

Tony Gonzalez TE
Drafted: 1997, Round 1, Pick 13
Career: 13 seasons, 206 games
Notes: Gonzalez's career receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns already top the seven tight ends in the Hall of Fame. He has missed just two starts since becoming a starter in 1998 and he enters 2010 one catch shy of 1,000

Any list like this is flawed without DT on it. I would personally put Bobby Bell in the top 20, but at least they didn't leave him off entirely.

Are you saying Tony shouldn't be on the list?

Have you seen the show or just the list?

Like I posted in the Peter King thread, I urge anyone who considers themselves an NFL fan to watch, in HD if possible. Well researched and crafted to give us the best each candidate had to offer. They had some footage of Lane and Butkis that made Atwater and Ray Lewis look like pimply-faced teens. Footage of Sayers and Simpson that really highlighted how graceful and powerful they were.

And [except for the Andre Johnson shit], they were introspective in the final episode about the vagaries of their choices. Most interesting was that 56 of their top 100 came from 5 teams, not 'in that team's history' teams, teams that were all together at one time. 60's Packers, 60's Colts, 70's Steelers, 80's 9ers and 90s 'Boys.

As for Lenny, I'd accept that if Namath hadn't snuck in at the bottom. I can buy there being 100 better players in all of NFL history, but not that Namath was one of them.

Steve Young should not have made the list either. DT I think should have but at least Shannon Sharpe was not there either .

I have heard nothing but the worst from the list. I wont even watch.

I haven't looked at the list, but...

1 - where would you rank him all time at his position?
2 - are those above him on your list in the top 100?

7 Reggie White
15 Deacon Jones
31 Bruce Smith
39 Gino Marchetti
86 Willie Davis
98 Lee Roy Selman
99 Michael Strahan

Strictly on skills, he's about even with Bruce.
Gino and Willie benefit from being on legendary teams.
Strahan and Smith benefit from SB appearances.
Reggie and Deacon are legitimately higher regarded.

So in short, I'd rate him at 3-4 all time DE.

I've seen 3 episodes and all have been great.

I'm planning to download them all in HD.

The 1958 NFL Championship game footage of Unitas was stunning in HD. Simply amazing.

The NFL needs to get on the ball and start releasing old games in HD for purchase and download. People would jump on it.

As much as I hate him there is no way Elway should be below Favre and Brady.
