Dave Meggett, Former NFL Star, Sentenced to 30 Years in Rape Case
By FanHouse Staff

Former NFL star Dave Meggett was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Wednesday after being convicted of criminal sexual misconduct and burglary in a South Carolina court, according to multiple reports.

The charges were brought up in the aftermath of a January 2009 encounter between Meggett, 42, and a college student at her house in North Charleston, S.C. Meggett did not take the stand in the trial, and his lawyer, Beattie Butler of the Charleston County Public Defender's Office, indicated that he would appeal. Butler contested that Meggett and the student had consensual sex, then had an argument later in the night in question.

Meggett starred as a running back and kick returner with the New York Giants for six seasons, New England Patriots for three seasons and New York Jets for one season between 1989 and 1998. At one point he was the NFL's career leader in punt return yardage, amassing 3,708 yards, currently good for second-most of all-time. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season, helped the Giants to a win in Super Bowl XXV and returned to the Super Bowl with the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.

Meggett has faced a long a history of allegations of sex crimes dating back to the end of his career. In 1998, he was arrested in Toronto after authorities said he allegedly assaulted an escort worker after a three-way sexual encounter. He also resigned from his job as parks and recreation director in Robersonville, N.C., in 2006 after being accused of sexually assaulting his former girlfriend, an accusation that led to him being convicted of misdemeanor sexual battery and given two years' probation.

Meggett still faces charges in a September 2008 incident in which a teenager told police she met Meggett through a mutual friend and he forced her to have sex at a South Carolina home after inviting her to breakfast, according to The Post and Courier of Charleston, S.C.

Damn 30 years seems pretty harsh. If he had killed her wouldn't he have gotten 20? Seems way too harsh to me.

Repeat sexual offender. He's probably been roughing them up, too.

If so, 30 years sounds about right, to me.

i concur - pisses me off, people whom are dealt all of the glory and money and whom are living the 'good life' -- How do these people become predators? I mean, how does that even happen? It's not like Meggett couldn't find a piece of pussy, clearly a disorder there. What a piece of shit. It's just odd, that FORCEFUL part, must've had no game and been a sick mf'er

Death sounds about right to me. But instead he'll probably do about ten years, get paroled, and then rape the first woman he has an opportunity to corner, and get sentenced all over again. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay for our fucked up justice system! 4321

Lots of teams are trying to educate the problems assiciated in raping woman. I know that is a point of emphasis in rookie classes. Raping woman is also a problem with the league after the playing days are over as well. I personally think the rape problem is here to stay, but we can educate the players on the proper time and place for rape.

Didn't Berman used to say, "Look at that little Meggett run!" as a play on the Howard Cosell's perceived racist comment ("Look at that little monkey run") that got him in hot water?

Dave Meggett once turned me down for an autograph. Probably because at the time I was 12 and taller than him.

A former NFL star needs a public defender? :spock:

What is he just dirt poor or something?

Well here's my view to it all. Some may think it's harsh and that's well....too ****in' bad. If he's a repeat offender that means that (A) He hasn't learned his lesson and the severity of the offense...or (B) He can't be cured of the problem, or (C) He doesn't care.

These types of people need to be taken out back and shot in the head....solves everyone's problem, saves time and court money(tax dollars).

Yeah, and that got Cosell fired. Now, coaches don't swat players, because that's abuse. Fuck that! I made sure that I was the first to get swatted at the half, because I owned up to my fuckup.

We were down 2 TD's at the time, but we came back, stopped them, and kicked the other team's ass by 2 TD's when the game was over.

Most NFL stars are broke after or before they quit playing... Espn Mag did a report on that a few years back....

You would be surprised how many have nothing when its all over...

They're getting stricter and stricter on NFL players raping women. These days, Lawrence Taylor can't even rape a woman without it causing a stir, and he's #3 on the NFL Network all-time player list. At some point, no NFL player is going to be able to rape a woman, even if he's in the pro bowl.

We still lead the league in On-Girl Spitting, though.

The victim owed Megget $200 which she had not been able to pay until the night of the rape. The victim said that Megget showed up at her home around midnight and asked for the money but the victim couldn’t pay. In response, according to the victim, Megget told her “he was going to take a down payment now” and proceeded to sexually assault the victim. The victim said that Megget ‘grabbed her throat, pinned her arm behind her back and had forcible intercourse with her.’
