Sears has announced they will be open on Thanksgiving Day for th first time in history...

Toys R Us has announced they are opening for Doorbusters at 10:00PM on Thanksgiving day....

Where does this nonsense end??? Do people not have anything better to do in their lives but go shopping anymore??

I guess im a traditionalist and feel everything should be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Their employees deserve the break.

Though I definitely agree with this, grocery stores and the like are open, so I guess they aren't being TOO evil.

But yeah, Black Friday is stupid.

I honestly think it is related to the economy. It seems like almost every company is having big discounts to try to keep sales levels up. This is just another example IMO.

And no, I have never done the Black Friday thing.

My time is far more valuable. If you consider how much time you spent waiting in line versus the discount you'll get you found you made a poor value tradeoff. What I fine particularly hilarious and sad are those people who wait in line to get the deals and then sell them on craigslist after. YAY you waiting in line for 8 hrs and made $20.

I've gotten sick of the whole getting gifts for everyone under the sun. My wife insists on getting a gift for our kids teachers and daycare providers. Then there are those annoying gift exchanges and ornament parties. I love Christmas and hate it at the same time. It is no longer just a family event.

BLACK FRIDAY TIP: (At Target Stores)

Buy what you want from the Black Friday Ad on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and pay full price.

Their policy is that if something goes on sale up to 7 days after purchase, they will make a price adjustment with just your receipt in hand.

This way you beat the crowd, and get that 46 inch TV for 450 dollars.

My wife in all her infinite wisdom went to Black Friday with her sisters when she was HAMMERED a couple years ago. She was pleasant the next morning.

Christmas as a religous holiday is good. Christmas as an opportunity to get with family is good. Christmas as a giant production and a competition for who gives the best gift is horrible. FFS if everyone would just get together, eat, enjoy family and praise the birth of Christ, life would be good. But it never seems to be that. Its always about how late we are or how somebody isn't doing it right. Or the presents look like crap. Or someones present sucks. Or. Or. Or. ... Fuck it all ends up being stressful and completely destroys the intent of the holiday.

I prefer working on holidays and volunteer for them everytime a paid holiday comes up. Making triple time goes alot further for my family than standing in queue for hours on end with people I don't know or care to know just to save an extra $20-30 bucks on a couple pieces of chinese made electronic junk.

Speaking of shopping....

I don't really think this deserves it's own thread, but last night I stopped by the local mall to pick up a watch battery, and afterward the wife and decided to wander around a bit to walk off dinner. On the second level in an area of the mall we rarely go to is an Abercrombie & Fitch store. I was still a good 20 yards away from it when the smell hit. Seriously, what is that fucking cologne/perfume stench? I noticed the same noxious odor at another Abercrombie store in a different mall a few months ago. Good God, it's horrible. Obviously, since I'm not a 13-year-old girl who wants to look like a 20-year-old prostitute, I don't shop there, but how on earth could anybody find that smell appealing? If I worked somewhere near that store and had to smell that every day I think I'd firebomb the place. Yuck.

It seems so ironic that a store with a name that sounds like a stodgy English law firm sells that kind of clothing and smells like a French whorehouse.

It's funny you should mention Drakkar. I had an old bottle of that crap fall out of my medicine cabinet once. It cracked the top of the bottle and I didn't realize it for a couple of months. At that point I made the mistake of pouring it down the drain. The alcohol had evaporated, and what hit my sink was the oily base that made my bathroom stink for several days. That's exactly what the Abercromie smell reminded me of.

Oh, I'm sure when we are out we have picked up a few more things that we normally wouldn't have.

But in general we do 90% of our x-mas shopping on that day and save tons!
The itmes the people on our lists want are in the ads, we go get them early, you go back in the store later that same day and the prices are marked right back up! It's pretty simple to figure out.

The funny thing is that businesses will keep pushing the start time up to "gain an advantage" and then eventually everything will be open on Thanksgiving and the whole "after Thanksgiving shopping rush" will die because there's nothing special about it. And we'll continue on our path toward wearing Mao jackets and marching lockstep in uniformity.

Do you really save that much?

I've ventured out on Black Friday for the past five or six years any time I wasn't deployed when I thought there was something I just had to have. Of course I normally end up buying a buch of crap I don't need for other folks just because they would like it and "Hell, it's a good deal". I wouldn't go to Best Buy or something like that and camp out like some of those crazy fuckers (IMO) do and I'm normally not after the ______ that they only have 3 or 4 of in a store though.
The biggest things I can remember buying on Black Friday are a treadmill that was normally $1300 marked down to $700, a TV that was priced $899 down from $1299 the week before and some POS laptop for about $300 (but it got the kid through her first two years of college before everything had to be Apple).

I may venture out to a Wal-Mart (I know, I'm the devil) this Friday and try to buy a set of tires. They're $74 each rather than $159 so I can save a few hundred bucks and I need them anyway, so why not?

Munson

I've never bought anything on Black Friday, but I think I might do it this year. I'll probably go to Cabela's real early to pick up some winter clothes, like hoodies, a jacket, wool socks, and gloves. If I don't get pissed off from all the insane shoppers, I might head over to Nebraska Furniture Mart and possibly pick up a new laptop.

But it's like MMA on aisle 5 and that's pretty funny. For real.
Two years ago (I think it was two) I saw two women get in a hell of a fight. Wal-Mart had some GPS units on sale and I though I would get one for each of my kids since they didn't have them.
There was a box with roughly 150 of them in the aisle and these two heifers were in front of it guarding it like there were only two of them and they were made of solid gold. When 5:00 comes one of them tears into the box and apparently elbowed the other and the fists started to fly. I just watched it for about 30 seconds or so in disbelief and a sweet looking little old (probably mid 60s) lady taps me on the shoulder and says something along the lines of, "Those two bitches have lost their minds, they aren't worth all of that. Oh would you mind handing me two of them". I couldn't help but laugh, so I handed her two, got mine and got the heck away from there.

That is there choice to do so because this is a FREE country so to speak. To deny Christmas as a National Holiday tho is just dumb.

IMO, if Christmas is a national holiday than other non-Christian religious holidays should receive the same recognition.

They should just do away with hollidays all together. Hell both the Libs and Cons would agree, no one would be offended for the Libs and the Corps would get more produtivity out of their empoyees for the Cons.

If they work for the goverment they get a payed day off.

Yes, they receive a paid day off.

At my work we receive the entire week off, paid. If it were my choice I'd work that week and choose a different week for paid time off.

Fine, go make one up. This year I'm going to celibrate on Dec 22 Festivus. That's not a National holiday but it should be.

I enjoy getting a good deal as much as the next guy, but all the time and hassle to save $50 on a TV or whatever? So many people must value their at zero.

I had to go to the mall 10 days ago to go to the Apple Store to get a replacement charger for my laptop and it was an absolute zoo. Had I known how crowded it was going to be, I would have just paid the money and bought one online.

You can say whatever you want. Reality is that not everyone who is American or lives in this country celebrates Christmas.

Bob Dole got a call a little bit ago from one of the Dillard's sales staff letting him know that Friday there was an additional 50% off every sale item in the store. Bob Dole thanked him for the heads-up, and told him that he didn't care if everything in the store was $1 on Friday, Bob Dole wasn't getting anywhere near that fucking mall.

If I do it's from my computer. No way do I partake of that nonsense. I have feeling that Thanksgiving will be like blue Sundays within the next ten years. Sad, because I think it's the best US holiday. One that is about being grateful for what you have vs. wanting and spending more. All of the other holidays are filled with that.

But revisionist history and brutality aside, Thanksgiving is really what being blessed is all about.

I think you should go work for free that week, just to show 'em. :harumph:
