I understand that. It's hard for the Rams to get all of their fan base back, though. It's cool that the Rams so far have had no black outs, but I do understand that this is caused by Rams fans. Making a trip to the playoffs could change this, though.

Chiefs' victory exposes Rams' limitations

The Rams did not have enough support for Sam Bradford in a 27-13 loss to Kansas City.
<!-- end wide photo -->ST. LOUIS -- The first 13 weeks of this St. Louis Rams (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/stl/st-louis-rams) season drew our eyes to the horizon.

They were all about the expanding long-term possibilities.

<!-- INLINE MODULE -->Week 15 Coverage

<!-- END INLINE MODULE -->With rookie quarterback Sam Bradford (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13197) emerging by the week, it was natural to envision the Rams (6-8) dominating NFC West play for years to come and delivering Super Bowl titles to the heartland.

The past two weeks, punctuated Sunday with a dispiriting 27-13 home defeat (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=301219014) to the Kansas City Chiefs (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-chiefs), have brought the Rams face to face with their short-term limitations.

It's been a painful exercise, especially for running back Steven Jackson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5549), the proudest Ram. But nothing substantive about this team has changed. The Rams remain in their formative stages. They also remain in prime position to earn a playoff berth.

That last part was sometimes difficult to see Sunday.

Chiefs fans outnumbered Rams fans in some parts of the Edward Jones Dome. They chanted derisively, baited the Rams into false starts and unleashed tomahawk chops during the game's final excruciating moments, when most Rams fans had already departed.

Afterward, Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo seemed to grasp the bigger picture. He pointed ahead to the Rams' home date with the San Francisco 49ers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/sf/san-francisco-49ers) in Week 16, declaring that the team was entering playoff mode for the final two weeks.

"We should have been in playoff mode today," Jackson snapped when a reporter apprised him of Spagnuolo's outlook.

Jackson and Spagnuolo were both right.

The Rams were indeed horrible Sunday. They should have been better.

Billy Bajema (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8663), Jason Smith (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=12623), Jerome Murphy (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13290), Jason Brown (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8538) and Rodger Saffold (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13294) committed false-start penalties. Laurent Robinson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10519) and Daniel Fells (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10287) dropped passes. Bradford felt the Rams' pressure and missed a few throws as a result. The Rams couldn't get enough pressure on Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8644), who defied concerns about his recent appendectomy by charging through the Rams' defense with daring scrambles.

"The bottom line is we just didn't play good enough football to get the job done, and it's unacceptable," Rams receiver Danny Amendola (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11674) said.

There's one more line beneath that one. It reads: The Rams aren't talented enough on offense, even with Bradford, to keep pace with good teams on the scoreboard.

Every NFL team needs third and fourth wide receivers. The Rams suited up four of them Sunday.

Every team needs backup tight ends. St. Louis suited up three of those, too.

The Rams are leaning too heavily on role players. They need more raw talent at receiver and tight end.

This team lacks firepower.

"I won't say it that way," Spagnuolo said, "but I just think when there is pressure on the quarterback, if you look at it from the defensive side, somebody defensively is winning up front and somebody on the back end is covering pretty good. From an offensive standpoint, you have to find a way to uncover quicker -- because I know the quarterback we have will get rid of the ball quick enough."

Time and again, Bradford dropped back to pass, surveyed his options and settled on "none of the above" for his answer. Bradford once even settled for a 3-yard scramble on third-and-7 when it was obvious there was no chance he would reach the first-down marker.

The Chiefs loaded up against the run, daring the Rams to make a play in the passing game.

"If we see single high safety, we're getting one-on-ones outside," Bradford said. "That's really when things in our passing game should open up, so as a quarterback, you love to see single high."

The Rams can expect to see more of the same in their final two games and certainly in the playoffs, should they qualify.

But the NFC West race should distract the Rams' leadership from the games most important to their prospects -- those featuring top college talent. The college bowl season and upcoming all-star games should help the Rams find badly needed weapons for their promising young quarterback.

Bradford has no touchdowns and four interceptions in losses to New Orleans and Kansas City over the past two weeks. The Saints roughed up Bradford with well-executed blitzes. The Chiefs seemed to win one-on-one matchups against the Rams' offensive linemen. And when the Rams did have opportunities, they could not make plays anyone is likely to remember. They were outgunned.

"Well, in both games, yes, we did face teams that have a lot of offensive firepower, but in both games, we were in the game," Jackson said. "The scoreboard doesn't really reflect some of the opportunities that we had, especially this game. We had an opportunity to go up with a substantial lead and we didn't do so, and we allowed a team that does have an explosive offense with a great running game stick around. It bit us."

No doubt. The Rams drove downfield twice to open the Kansas City game, only to settle for field goals. Their third possession was plain ugly.

The Rams took over at the Kansas City 48 after cornerback Kevin Dockery (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9926) picked off Cassel. Bradford found Amendola for a 7-yard gain on third-and-6, but a penalty against Smith, the right tackle, set up first-and-20.

What to do? The Rams helped the Chiefs' pass rush by removing any threat of a quick-hitting draw to Jackson. They left Amendola alone in the backfield on first down. They emptied the backfield entirely on third down, and Bradford took a sack.

"They did a good job disguising and mixing up zone and man," Bradford said. "It seems like we called crossing routes and they would be in (Cover) 3 and then we'd call a zone beater and they'd be in man. It was just a tough day."

We know the Rams can run Jackson up the middle for three or four yards. We know Bradford can throw accurately and make wise decisions most of the time. We also know the Rams aren't going to scare top teams with Robinson, Danario Alexander (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2741), Brandon Gibson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=12567) and Amendola as their primary weapons in the passing game.

The Chiefs' starting receivers, Dwayne Bowe (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10467) and Chris Chambers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2600), made timely plays Sunday.

The Rams had no answer. They need to get help for Bradford.

In the meantime, there's an NFC West title to claim -- if anybody wants it.

That article was pretty accurate. I remember seeing one of the Rams fans talking about how the Rams are farther along in their rebuild than the Chiefs are. That team has a promising QB, but he's still only good if you use the qualifier "for a rookie". Beyond that, they have Chris Long, and that's about it. Take them out of the NFC West, and they are a 5-11 team.

I'm not saying the Rams are on the same level at all. In fact, I think they're about a year behind in the rebuilding proccess compared to the Chiefs. The Rams don't have any offensive weapons besides SJ and maybe Amendola and they only have 1 decent LB.

I tend to agree. The Rams need to get a RB to compliment him. Drafting a RB that's like Charles would help. I admire how SJ has played, though. He's never been on a team that has finished above .500 and gives it his all. He did that last year. He topped over 1,000 yards this year with a bad groin and a broken pinkie. I think SJ has about 2-3 left of putting up top 10 RB numbers.

There's no way he's got 2-3 more years left as a top 10 RB. His yardage is up there, but he's not a top 10 RB even now. I'd put him somewhere around 12-15.

Run blocking by the Rams has been awful this year. And Spags has decided to make the Rams FB inactive the past few games because he doesn't play on ST. Anyways, I think a RB(Thomas?), the one who is from KSU, would be the perfect RB for the Rams. And the Rams would have drafted Green last year if he wasn't picked by the Jets right before the Rams were about to pick. I like how Devaney and Spags have built this team.

I'm telling you, when they guy stuck his finger in his face, and stopped his arm from chopping, the Ram fan on the other side of my son was on him like white on rice. Then the doode says, "we can't let them do this in our house!"! The reply from the Rams fans was, "there are more of them than us, shut up!"! So it was a little funny too... Just a couple of things noticed on TV:

The dome announcer is really loud and annoying. Maybe the TV sound guys were accentuating it but it sounded like he was constantly shouting into the mic.

What the hell was with all of the whistles when the Chiefs had the ball? I didn't think that you could do that. I saw a game earlier this year where they penalized a team when a fan blew a whistle in the stands.

Do you love seeing other people get frustrated when they pay hundreds of dollars to go to multiple games and be surrounded by opposing fans?

Don't let them act like it hasn't happened in KC.

Two years ago, Arrowhead was half Cowboys fans, and the year before (IIRC) that it may have been more than half full of Packers fans.

Just two examples I was there to witness.

Bottom line, it happens.

Just a couple of things noticed on TV:

The dome announcer is really loud and annoying. Maybe the TV sound guys were accentuating it but it sounded like he was constantly shouting into the mic.

Real whistles??? I can whistle and make it sound sort of like a whistle, but, no, you can't have a real whistle...

Um, as has been stated by many fine posters before me.

YES. F*CK YES. A MILLION TIMES OVER YES.

It is YOUR fan base that allowed for your shitty dome to be invaded by Red & Gold.

It is YOUR fan base that couldn't drown out the Chop.

It is YOUR fan base that is counting the days until Spring Training.

It is YOUR fan base that doesn't know a first down from an inside the park home run.

It is YOUR fan base that sucks. Not our problem.

Great point. They were some seriously sore losers. And when the one guy wanted to go toe-to-teo with my 14-year-old, that was over the top. I've taken him to Denver, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis and never seen that. It was funny at some level, and the best thing, he had a line of lambs that were on him before I would have been needed. One of them felt so bad, they bought stuff for him.. All over the chop we were ALL doing!!! LOL!!

you werent in sec. 138 were you? When they started the player introductions I thought I had mistakenly made my way into a WWE event ROFL

Anyone else have a bitch of a time getting into the stadium? Got there 45 minutes before kickoff and didn't make it through the doors until 12:05. Security was slow as shit.

Any time I go to either a Cards or Rams game I take the Metro Link. Only costs $4.50 per person (round trip) and you get dropped off right by the stadium/dome. No fighting traffic or paying ridiculous parking fees.

I'm talking about the line to get in the place. We walked down from Wash. Ave. They only had 2 security guards doing pat downs on guys at a main entrance where we entered from. It took forever.

Arrowhead East Indeed!!!!

From the St. Louis Post Dispatch
For a home game, it was a little harder to hear," Bradford said. "But we have to do better. There's no reason for that. I've got to be louder. We've got to be more in tune to the snap count. Five false starts are really inexcusable."
Most distressing to Rams officials was the fact that the lower bowl of the stadium which is almost exclusively the domain of season-ticket holders was littered with Chiefs fans. That was particularly the case between the 40-yard lines, where there were basically as many Chiefs fans as Rams fans. What that meant is that lots of Rams fans sold their tickets to Chiefs fans for this game.

The Chiefs are 5-0 against the Rams in the regular season since the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995, outscoring St. Louis by a 2-to-1 margin (189-94). Three of those Kansas City victories have come in the dome, with probably 10,000-plus Chiefs fans in attendance each time.
