Michigan has fired football coach Rich Rodriguez after his third season ended with a school-record 38-point loss in the Gator Bowl, Fox 2 TV in Detroit is reporting.

The report comes after Rodriguez met with athletic director Dave Brandon earlier Tuesday.

Members of the football team are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, according to another report out of Ann Arbor.

Michigan's Gator Bowl loss to Mississippi State knocked Rodriguez's overall record to 15-22 with college football's winningest program.

Michigan will owe the coach $2.5 million to buy out the final three years of his contract.

Michigan really boxed themselves in a corner here... they had to fire Rodriguez, but the timing is horrible (4 weeks until signing day).

Also assuming they hire someone to bring back a pro-style offense that means that the majority of Rodriguez' spread offense recruits and players are going to be a bad fit for the new system.

On top of all this... their #1 choice Harbaugh apparently has no interest in going to Michigan.

How do you go 15-22 at Michigan? That is almost unfathomable.

THIS.

Harbaugh or Miles needs to take that job, for at least one million reasons more than Rodriguez took it.

Question answered in post 6.

Good litmus test for head coach candidate:

"Would you consider hiring Greg Robinson for your staff in any capacity?"

If the answer is anything but "Hell no!" pull a lever, and the candidate disappears through a trap door into a shark-filled tank in the basement.

LOL @ that disaster.

Wow.

I really thought he'd do at least a LITTLE better up there because the spread has been reasonably effective against the Big 10. You'd think he'd be able to beat the crappy teams up there.

He went from one of the hottest coaching names in college to a laughingstock.

What's lost in all this was that Mecca was right. As much as it pains me to say. The spread doesn't do any good for a team that can bring in top tier talent.

Harbaugh would be awesome because

1. It gets him away from Stanford and they can go back to their previous level of suck and

2. It would keep the Donkeys from hiring him as he might come up with a way to draft Luck.

I like how Rodriquez comes and completely demolishes the defense, which is usually the strong part of Michigan. Michigan can get recruits out the ass, yet Dick Rod chooses to run the 3-3-5. Who the f*ck runs a 3-3-5 outside of a non-BCS school? Maybe Michigan can hire Bill Callahan next

Harbaugh's not going to Michigan.

He's going to Kansas, remember. Something about his wife thinking Arthur Bryant's is badass.

And as for Rich Rodriguez - how can the same system that was so awesome with Pat White suck that hard with Denard Robinson? I refuse to believe that the man got dumber.

Was the Big East that easy? (Wait...don't answer that)

Huh? Florida won 2 NC's with the spread-option and Auburn is in the title game this year with it. Oregon also runs a spread and is in the title game.

From WIKI
When former head coach Rich Rodriguez departed West Virginia University, before their Fiesta Bowl matchup against the University of Oklahoma, to accept the head coaching job at the University of Michigan, Casteel originally followed Rodriguez. But after interim head coach Bill Stewart was promoted to head coach after the 48-28 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl, Casteel decided to stay at West Virginia.

If Casteel went with him maybe their D is better . Casteel is 1000x the DC robinson is/was.

Just to emphasize how much they hated him.

I felt that way about Herm Edwards:

"Hey, Herm, could you come back in today? I just want to fire your ass again, because it feels so good."
