HO-LY SHIT!

Currently on vacation, but checking my email at night. I got an email from the paralegal from where I worked earlier this week. Once I get home, one of the lawyers wants to have me come in for a formal interview Monday afternoon. It's down to me and one other person!!!

I feel like I could cry, and I will if I get this job.

I filled out an online application, attached my resume, and did an online assessment. They had me schedule a time to go in for an on-site assessment, so I'm going in at noon tomorrow. I'm not sure if that includes an interview, but I'm prepared!

That certainly sounds like an interview to me. Strange that they call it an assessment, I mean are they not going to talk to you or ask questions?!? To me anything beyond looking at someone's resume and application is an interview. I wonder why they call it that?

I just talked to an old friend who works there. She said the on-site assessment is math and behavioral questions. If someone is available, then I'll get an interview. If not, then they will call me back.

Well, I've learned something everywhere I've worked. Even the places that were awful and I didn't like ended up teaching me something. Hopefully this place helps you get where you want to be.

Hopefully you don't get knocked out of contention because of some "personality test" bullshit. Those are always full of shit. The theory is sound, but very very rarely does the evaluation accurately identify potential employees that would fit well within a system.

Thanks for the tips. First time I've had a phone interview. I met the guy when I went in for my assessment, but this still feels weird. I think I'll be more comfortable, though. Luv, are you familiar with Lexis Nexis and WestLaw? How much legal research can you do? Just wondering.

Good luck with the day.

We've heard a LOT about them in class. Done some research with the books that Westlaw has published. One of my classes starting next week is computer based research, which will definitely include a more detailed lesson with each.

Just do yourself a favor and DO NOT work for Lathop & Gage, LLP in Springfield. Trust me on this one.

I think that would be a huge advantage if you knew all the details about those programs.

Because they are expensive for firms (assuming the firm can even afford them). It costs something around $70 for a search on westlaw. One search. But there are methods of being effecient that a firm would really appreciate. If you can show that kind of effeciency, I would think a firm would consider you a valuable resource.

Be an expert on KeyCites, using the books and the online database, for WestLaw. I'd think that would go a long way.

Well, they asked me to come back tomorrow! I didn't get a formal interview today, but the paralegal at the firm seems hopeful that it is a good sign that they asked me to come back. They're having me work tomorrow morning.

That's really spectacular. If you sucked, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have done that so you must not suck. If the decision maker is on the fence, consider buying them a car. That will be a much better investment this time around.

Good luck.. Hopefully they let you go on your trip to Florida..

One attorney actually asked if they'd see me tomorrow, and I said sure. He asked if I was supposed to come back tomorrow. I said I thought that it was just for today, that I was preparing a trip on Wednesday, but that I could help again tomorrow. He asked when I was coming back from my trip, so I told him Monday. He asked if I was available for half of a day tomorrow, and I said yes, and that morning or afternoon didn't matter. He talked with the paralegal, and she thought they would have more of a need for me in the morning. He told her I was preparing for a trip, which she already knew about. He said (jokingly) that he was canceling it. He walked back into his office, and I went in to talk with the paralegal. She seemed to think it was a good sign.

However, I did not have a formal interview or any discussion of anything more permanent. I guess I will see where it leads. I've got some questions for them before I leave tomorrow.

Either way, it's been a great experience.

I doubt they would do that. If they did, though, I'd be eating the cost of the vacation.

They wouldn't make you throw away all that money, and it would be better for them than waiting 2 weeks on someone who's already employed. Companies put a significant amount of time and money into finding the right people... a few days isn't going to matter.

I had a similar situation... plans for going to London were put on hold while waiting to hear back from a company that I had unsuccessfully interviewed for a couple of times. They kept in contact, saying the job posting was on hold, etc; and after a couple of months I finally booked the vacation. A few days later they offered me the job, but they were fine giving me 3 weeks... flew back from London on a Saturday and drove to Omaha the next night to start the new job. Yeah, it was a little crazy.

If I were in need of a job, and one became available that allowed me to work.....my trip would wait.
