January 11, Jacksonville Journal-Courier – (Illinois) 800 hogs perish in Ill. confinement blaze. About 800 hogs died January 9 in a fire at a hog confinement facility about 6 miles southwest of Arenzville, Illinois. The fire caused an undetermined amount of damage. Arenzville and Meredosia firefighters were called about 1:50 a.m. to the farm at 2323 Hefner Hills Road, where they found the south end of a hog confinement building in flames. The hogs are owned by High Ridge Pork. Arenzville’s fire chief said the fire began in the nursery part of the building, but its cause is unknown. The building, which measures about 32 feet by 180 feet, held about 1,000 hogs, but only about 200 of them survived. Firefighters were on the scene until about 5:30 a.m. Source: http://www.firehouse.com/news/top-headlines/800-hogs-perish-ill-confinement-blaze

South Korea has been heavily criticised for burying up to one
million pigs alive as it grapples with a foot and mouth disease outbreak.

I don't know anything about the business but that seems like a small space for 1,000 pigs. 5760 square feet for 1,000 pigs or just a little over 5 square feet apiece?

Must have been grower pigs 50-100 lbs.

FYI. pigs 12-50 pounds need 2.5-3.0 sq. ft.

50-100 need 5.0 sq.ft.

100 to 270 need 7-8 sq.ft

Area X Depth = Volume. They must have dug pretty deep. One big mound per pound. These Koreans lost an international bet with ConAgra or Tyson. Meanwhile, $1.99/klb at Price Chopper for pork loin cuts. Can't pass up that deal, when HyVee had a sale 3 weeks ago, at $1.59/lb?

I'd dress the hog out in my back yard, if these folks in my neighborhood wouldn't object to it, so much.
