Brett Favre has insisted for months that the 2010 season was his last, and he’s following up on that in 2011.

Alex Marvez of FOX Sports is reporting that Favre has officially filed his retirement papers, a step toward actually retiring from football and not just saying he’s retiring.

Does that mean it’s impossible that Favre could change his mind once again and come back? No. Nothing is impossible with Favre. Officially filing retirement papers doesn’t mean he’s actually officially retired — any more than it meant he was officially retired when a New York Daily News headline read, “Favre Files His Retirement Papers with NFL.”

But from all indications Favre really, truly means it when he says he’s now officially retired.

He will if you don't watch Dancing with the Stars, I guess. Assuming ESPN doesn't dedicate a segment each night to his performance (which is probably more likely than I'd care to believe).

The only funny thing Shannon Sharpe ever said was a couple of weeks ago when he said that the Packers won't sign Favre to a one-day deal to retire as a Packer, because they're afraid he'd show up at training camp next year.

He said it much less eloquently than that, but it was still funny.

Some of us just like his taste in women! He'll surely make it into the HoF, but that doesn't have anything to do with anything IMO... If sleeping around was a "real" issue, we'd have no government. So it's just fun. Not to worry, he'll make it into the HoF.

If you think we hate him, try a Packers board.

I hate his waffling, the endless media circus, the fact that he went out of his way to land with a division rival and screw all his fans. He's basically an interception throwing Neil Smith. Fuck him. I'm thrilled that his career ended in a scandal-tainted pile of spectacular fail.

And he probably is a first ballot guy, but who's going to care? Packer fans? After everything that happened, I doubt if most of them would walk across the street to see him get inducted into anything, much less drive to Canton. He was with the Jets for a year - their fans won't give a shit. The Viking faithful? Please. He was the poster child for their ruination. I imagine he'll get inducted in front of a shitload of empty chairs.

Packers fans will chill out soon and be glad if they can work it out for him to get a resigning contract just to retire a Packer. If Rodgers would have turned out to be a bust, they would have really hated him forever. I've already talked to a lot of packers fans who were happy that he moved on because Rodgers has become so good. I also think that him getting his brains beat out this year was good enough punishment in most of their minds. They also will be glad for him to retire a Packer. There will be a lot that are bitter forever, but most will just move on.

If they cut him loose and he wasn't ready to hang it up, then it was within his perrogative. I think that most people knew that the reason that he went to the Vikings was because he didn't have to learn another offense. Most old competitors end up staying too long like he did.

And I've talked to Packer fans who've burned No. 4 jerseys in their driveways. Again, it's not so much that he left, it's how he did it and where he ended up, clearly by design. I doubt if he'll ever be able to set foot inside Lambeau again without getting booed by at least a third of the crowd. Plus, I can't imagine the current Packer management is in any hurry to accommodate any "retire as a Packer" notions he might have. Personally I'd tell him to put on a Vikings hat and sit on top of the Metrodome the next time a blizzard blows through.

No doubt there will be a lot of fans that will never let this go and he will get booed some if he ends up bowing out in Lambeau. But I'm just saying that Rodgers great play over the last few years probably took some of the sting out of the whole thing for a lot of Packer fans.

The Packers and Brett will stage some media circus which will endear Brett again to the hearts of Packer faithful. It will be a story about how Brett noticed a hitch in somebodies technique and he flies up to Packer camp of his own accord and fixes player "x" into a superstar. They'll figure it out. There's too much merchandising money on the table not to do so.
