Dan Snyder wants writer who ripped him fired
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 2, 2011, 2:50 PM EST
In November, a writer named Dave McKenna wrote an article for the Washington City Paper headlined, “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder: From A to Z (for Zorn), an encyclopedia of the owner’s many failings.”

Snyder was not amused.

The Washington Post reports that Snyder is now threatening legal action against the City Paper and is seeking McKenna’s dismissal.

So far, Snyder has not filed a lawsuit, but one of his lawyers confirmed that a lawsuit is being prepared. For its part, the City Paper is standing by its decision to publish the piece ripping Snyder, and calling McKenna a “stellar reporter.”

So it sounds like Snyder won’t get his wish, and McKenna won’t be fired. And Snyder will also discover that his decision to ask for McKenna’s termination ensures that many people who hadn’t read “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder” will now.

Yep. He said it was for "safety," even though at the same time they were handing out approved signs that had a FedEx sponsor tag on them.

Wow, seems like there's just no hope for the Skins fans as long as that team is owned by Dan Snyder. Dude came off extremely insecure in that ESPN film on him and a lot of these things can be explained by that.

Wow.

Fan Appreciation Day: Gimmick used in 2006 by Snyder to draw people to FedExField, where he charged $25 to park to watch the team scrimmage and hear an address from Vinny Cerrato. The parking charge was not mentioned in the advertisements the team produced for the event.

Douchebag.

Helicopter: Favored method of transportation Snyder used to drop into Redskins practices in 1999 in Frostburg, Md., after taking control of the team.

OH MY GOD, Snyder is a jackass. I don't even like the Redskins fans and I always loved this announcer:

Herzog, Frank: Beloved former Redskins play-by-play announcer. Herzog was best known for signature call, “Touchdown, Washington Redskins!” He was replaced in Snyder’s Redskins Broadcasting booth in 2004 by Larry Michael, best known for saying “Brought to you by Subway! If you love bacon come into Subway! Eat fresh!”

Damn. On his Wikipedia page, it says:

"In 2006, Dan Snyder created an official September 11 commemorative hat which he sold at the price of $23.99. Snyder claimed that the hat would be worn by all players of each NFL team when in reality it never was. Profits were not directed toward any sort of relief effort aimed at victims of the September 11th attacks."

How stupid can you get?

Knott, Rene: D.C. sportscaster who in 2000 was forced to do live reports from the Redskins Park parking lot while peers filmed inside the practice facility. Knott’s employer, WJLA-TV, was the only local network affiliate that did not pay Snyder to become a “media partner” of the team.

lawl:

James Rubin, a Montgomery County attorney who represented the ticket sellers, says that he was shocked to learn during the case that Snyder now requires all employees to sign a document waiving their right to sue him “as a condition of employment.”

This is rich.

Redskins Extra Points MasterCard: The only credit card Snyder told fans he’d accept for season ticket payments for the 2005 season. He withdrew the demand following a threatened ticketholder revolt and after MasterCard told the Redskins to drop it.

Wow...foot shuffling porter redux!

Rodgers, Pepper: FedEx official whom Snyder almost made Redskins head coach. Snyder knew he wanted to fire Norv Turner in the middle of the 2000 season, but he didn’t have anybody to put in charge. So he contemplated Rodgers, 69, who had never coached in the NFL and whose last coaching stint was with the Memphis Mad Dogs of the CFL. Rodgers’ main qualification for the Redskins job was that, after FedEx became a Redskins sponsor, he watched games with Snyder in the owner’s box and told stories about coaching John Riggins at the University of Kansas.

ROFL

This is what happens when a lifelong fan owns the team. Classless and deranged!

Vanilla: Flavor of ice cream that Snyder left to thaw in defensive coordinator Mike Nolan’s office TWICE in one season to let the coach know the owner felt his schemes were simplistic, or vanilla. John Feinstein wrote that Snyder’s second delivery, after a loss to Dallas, consisted of “three giant canisters of melting 31 Flavors ice cream” and a note that said “I do not like vanilla.”

The Chiefs are somewhat guilty of this type of local media spin control too, by making 101 the Fox and 810 WHB their "official" stations for Chiefs info. It's hard to trust the objectiveness of WHB in their Chiefs coverage, because if they are critical, they would be biting the hand that feeds them. They've really lightened up on the Chiefs over the past year for that reason. And they've bashed the Royals once all the radio rights went over to Entercom and 610 sports.

Always remember to follow the money.

"George, Jeff: Quarterback and one of many Snyder-era free agent busts. Snyder brought George to D.C. on the advice of friend and former Redskins star Sonny Jurgensen. Terry Bradshaw pooh-poohed the George signing on the FOX pregame show: 'Both Jurgensen and George have one thing in common: they've never won anything,'said the four-time Super Bowl winner."

This could get interesting. City Paper basically responded: "Bring it, bitch." (http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/citydesk/2011/02/02/to-our-readers/)

Some interesting bits, that go right along with Snyder's general douchiness:

...we did not hear directly from Snyder, Redskins General Counsel David Donovan complained about that article and others in a letter to Atalaya Capital Management, an investment company that owns Creative Loafing, Inc., the parent company of Washington City Paper.

“Mr. Snyder has more than sufficient means to protect his reputation.... We presume that defending such litigation would not be a rational strategy for an investment fund such as yours. Indeed, the cost of litigation would presumably quickly outstrip the asset value of the Washington City Paper,” the letter read.

They've evidently also contacted the Post to demand they retain emails between the City Paper author and a Post blogger. Because, you know, Danny-boy thinks it's a conspiracy when a blogger posts links to other stories that are relevant to the topic they write about.

I guess I should probably start looking for an email from my lawyer regarding posting in this thread.

Rich business people throw around lawsuits like it's no big deal. They can spend a truckload of money and barely notice while the guy getting sued has very few resources to protect itself.
