They have to risk getting shot at.

I already tried that angle...delivering in parts of town any normal person wouldn't risk going to. Or maybe I only thought I did. Ugh. I guess I need to stop procrastinating.

No, I meant by other postal workers.

You're comparing them to Walmart workers. What do walmart workers carry?

Trailer park meth heads, when they drop like a sack of rocks in the store. :D

Okay, now I do feel stupid...lol. Duh. I guess I am just so used to the people I know that I don't think about the "postal" postal employees.

I didn't think of it that way. On the other hand, some of them, not so much.

My girlfriend's dad is a mailman. I don't think he enjoys it much, but the benefits are good, and isn't their retirement package somehow funded by taxpayers, because they are federal employees, right?

His kids' professions, in order, are: 1) a computer engineer 2) a pharmacist 3) a physical therapist 4) a high school English teacher 5) a pharmacy student 6) a biology student looking into dental school

Whatever was going on at their house worked. The dad is very disciplined person. Maybe not the most bookish guy, but no moron at all. And a former marine with a Purple Heart while serving in Vietnam.

Alright. I asked dad, and he said his retirement is social security, just like everyone else. He has also done some investing via 401k, as well as some on his own, but all he gets from the post office or government is whatever he's paid into social security.

No pension? I'm shocked. Ask him if a straight white guy that has never been in the military but scores high on their tests can get hired, if you don't mind. I'm pretty sure I already know the answer, but I'm curious.

In order to become a career employee, you have to take the exam. They hire temp employees. He thinks they make around $14-15/hour, but he's not for sure about that. Also, temp hires don't get benefits.

You've met Matt, our grillmaster, right? He had no military service.

The last time I took it, it was the 470. Looks like it's changed a bit.

I really don't know for sure, it's just what I've heard. I'd be pretty happy to get on there. Get paid to exercise. And paid well at that. I mean, it's not a ransom, but it sure as hell beats what I've been doing. I've gotten to the point where I'd rather be happy going to work every day even if I do make less money doing it. Thanks for the info on it.

I would like to know why we are going on day 4 without mail service. I live in a sub-division in Columbia and the roads have been bladed although not perfect they are passable. I even made sure to spend an extra 30 minutes clearing the street in front of my mail box when I did my driveway on Wednesday. It cracks me up that for the past few days the local news stations have been talking up the USPS about how they are still delivering mail. I can understand no mail on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the storm but now I am getting to the point of wanting to contact the local Post Master to ask what is going on.

I also find it a bit ironic that we received a package from FedEx today and a UPS truck just delivered a package to our neighbors across the street.

Believe your dad, I don't give a shit. Don't tell me the USPS doesn't have a pension plan, it's all over the news for being overfunded by 75 billion dollars.

My mom is livid, so I get to play go between. I swear, I don't know who appointed me mediator. Anyway, they live on a rural route, and today was the first day their road was somewhat passable. My stepdad went to their post office while he was in town today, and asked about it. They contract certain rural routes out, and they hadn't seen their delivery person in three days. My stepdad asked to get his mail, but they told him they'd rather him not do that. So, of course, I get to call my dad, and he said the reason they couldn't have given it to him right then was because it was back in a holding tray that they couldn't get to, waiting to be delivered. She proceeded to tell me what she thought. I'd had enough of doubting questioners on here today, that I told her to take it up with her post office on Monday. Ugh.
