No shit, half the reason the fuck up the words is that they are so concerned with their "vocal awesomeness". They forget that the song is not about them. I pretty much despise watching anyone do the National Anthem at ball games, cuz most of the time they just fuck it all up and nobody can sing along with it.

You answered your own question. It`s technically a very challenging song to sing note for note. That is why so many people "gospelize" it and ruin it. Last night was a disgrace x 2. (Singing it horribly and then forgetting the words) Just aweful........

Christina Aguilera Explains National Anthem Flub

Christina Aguilera is well aware that she made a boo-boo while singing the National Anthem opening up Sunday's Super Bowl XLV. Singing Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner" live at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the singer, 30, flubbed the lyrics – trilling "what so proudly we watched" instead of the correct lyrics, "o'er the ramparts we watched."

So what happened?

Aguilera opened up about the gaffe in a statement. "I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place," says the star. "I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."

Prior to the performance, the veteran entertainer said she was psyched to sing the patriotic ditty before millions of viewers.

"I have been performing the anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true...I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event."

One comment at the bottom:

No, she got too caught up trying to celebrate herself that she messed up. A note to all "star" singers out there. The song isn't about you, it's about the country. Treat it right and do it justice. Whether or not Christina had gotten the words right she had already done a disservice to the song. This is not your time to change it as you see fit. The song is bigger than you could ever hope to be. Sing the melody right.

She did well but she still added her own touches to it. Granted they are minimal but how hard is it to just sing it note for note?Define "note for note".

The Star Spangled Banner wasn't written by Mozart or Beethoven (or MacDowell/Copland if you want American composers). No original manuscript exists of the national anthem version (except the text). And in fact, the melody was based on a drinking song. So it's impossible to sing it "note for note". There's no comparison you can make to how it's supposed to be done.

That's why artists will play around with it and make it their own. They're artists, that's their job. And yeah, I do know what you mean by "note-for-note" but it's an elusive term. A more "formal", version is what you're looking for.

I'm not excusing Christina's horrible interpretation or god-awful warbling, but it is what it is.

She could have dressed a little better for the occasion. Somethin' like this would've worked.

Christina Aguilera Explains National Anthem Flub

Christina Aguilera is well aware that she made a boo-boo while singing the National Anthem opening up Sunday's Super Bowl XLV. Singing Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner" live at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the singer, 30, flubbed the lyrics trilling "what so proudly we watched" instead of the correct lyrics, "o'er the ramparts we watched."

Good grief.....she made a mistake...she wasnt the first and wont be the last.....cut her some slack.

Its not like she spit on the American Flag at the 50 yard line.

When I watched it I didn't think she was trying to make it all about her. She came out looking pretty conservative, and compared to what she normally does I didn't think she drew the words out a really long time. I guess I'm in the minority there.

Answer this for me... How many times have you heard a performer follow the National Anthem by stating, "Thank You"?

I think we need a new national anthem... the current one doesn't have OIL in it, at all.

I was taking a bathroom break during the song, but recall how TERRIBLE it sounded when she shredded it. It should be mandatory to sing the anthem the way it was written.

This. Hell I don't know why anyone even wants to go out in public anymore. Whole damn country is so critical.

Agreed. The Dixie Chicks are definitely second. I actually really liked the Blackhawk player Jim Cornelison who sang it during the Chicago playoff games as well.

I love Cornelison's rendition. He's got an enormous voice, but he doesn't go all ape shit crazy embellishing it. He just sings the damn song and lets his voice be all that's needed to make it special.

Define "note for note".

Regardless of the origins of the anthem, there is a generally-accepted set of lyrics and melody that people think of as the official version. I don't think there's really any value in debating this on the technical history of the song.

If you think that's awesome, listen to this(different singer, BTW):

This is how you sing the national anthem. It is not a fucking pop song, it requires no cute little runs to sound "hip."

THIS IS HOW YOU SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. You belt it out. And no one gives a fuck about your awful 'fro or track suit because of it.
