Holy shit...
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/02/anonymous_hacke_1.php

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/anonymouslogo.pngThe anarchic and amorphous hacker group Anonymous unleashed its online fury Sunday on Aaron Barr, a computer security expert with plans to tell the FBI everything he's gathered about the group. They took over his Twitter, covered it with racial slurs, published his social security number and proceeded to expose 50,000 of his company emails, available for download in one convenient file. Anonymous also messed with his company website, which is now down. All because he told the Financial Times that "he had collected information on the core leaders, including many of their real names, and that they could be arrested if law enforcement had the same data." So they took him to online war.

Mr Barr said he penetrated Anonymous as part of a project to demonstrate the security risks to organisations from social media and networking. He is presenting his research later this month at a conference in San Francisco.

Using LinkedIn, Classmates.com, Facebook and other sites, Mr Barr also burrowed deep enough into a US military group and a US nuclear plant that he could trick workers there to click on web links that, if they had been malicious, could have installed spying software on their computers. Such "social engineering" hacks are a major vulnerability for companies targeted in industrial espionage.

To punish him, Anonymous -- an enemy of Scientology and governments in Tunisia, Egypt and so on -- cornered Barr in a chat room to let him know that they had all of his findings about the group and his personal information. As reported by Gawker, from inside the chat:

"All your emails were dropped. Meaning we know you were trying to sell your ****ing research to the FBI. And the sad thing is the names and info in that document//research is all ****ing fake... you could have gotten a lot of random innocent people arrested," wrote one Anonymous member.

"That's an old version of my research.... not trying to sell it... much has changed," Barr wrote.

"I saw your latest data and it's all the same shit," snapped back another Anonymous member.

"They didn't just pick on any company, but we try to protect the US government from hackers," said Greg Hoglund, the founder of HBGary, which employs Barr. "They couldn't have chosen a worse company to pick on."

But on Twitter, the nature of Anonymous persisted: "Today we taught everyone a lesson. When we actually decide to bite back against those who try to bring us down, we bite back hard. #gameover." And: "Anonymous finds the line and then crosses it." Hashtag? #noregrets.

Anyhow, who are these Anonymous guys?

From what I can read, they are a sometimes-mean-spirited online group that includes both clueless bored kids and pretty skilled hackers. Very loosely led (if led by anyone at all) they usually torment people or organizations whom they think deserves it. They are probably best-known for going after Scientology. (who probably deserved it)

They don't steal or do ID theft, and its not like they are some scary criminal gang who will shoot anyone up or anything, I'm pretty sure they only do online crap. But, this is not a group who you give your name and then do something specifically to them that they don't like.

They aren't really an organization at all. There are no leaders, and they have no structure and no member list.
It's just a random social group that congregates around the /b/ boards of various chans (mainly shhhh, warning do not go there as there is a decently high chance of seeing child porn.)
Stuff like this really shouldn't be attributed to anonymous so much as to an individual or small group of individuals. Imagine if some random person who hangs out on Chiefs planet decided to go deface other football forums and posted "Don't fuck with Chiefsplanet, we will own you". It's pretty much exactly like that.

As for the part about them not stealing or doing ID theft... well that's the thing about giant social collectives, they are made up of all types. I'm pretty sure that many of the black hats who associate with anonymous have done those things and continue to do them, and frankly those aren't near the worst of it either.

The entire episode is an excellent representation of the cruelty anonymity can foster. That Chris Chan due is obviously mentally ill, yet he was relentlessly scorned and mocked by people who had nothing better to do?

Do they actually think they score points by taunting a mentally ill person?

Pretty weird behavior on everybody's part, if you ask me.

They usually pick somebody out who's doing something stupid online. Just a few months ago, they completely annihilated a 15 year old girl who was acting a fool on youtube. That's where the internet memes "backtrace your ip" and "cyberpolice" and "you dun goofed" came from. Google Jessie Slaughter.

you already have to use real information to get on the net.

You have to provide your ISP with your specifics. They, in turn, give you an IP address. That IP address leads back to you. You can use proxies or things like the TOR network but even those things aren't fullproof.

The man already knows who you are online, this OLID will only make it easier for them to find you. The Proliteriat should beware. Big Brother is less than 20 years away.

The RSA security conference took place February 14-18 in San Francisco, and malware response company HBGary planned on a big announcement.

The HBGary team headed over early to the RSA venue at the Moscone Center in order to set up their booth on the exhibition floor. Nerves were on edge. A week before, HBGary and related company HBGary Federal were both infiltrated by members of the hacker collective Anonymous, which was upset that HBGary Federal CEO Aaron Barr had compiled a dossier of their alleged real names. In the wake of the attack, huge batches of sensitive company e-mail had been splashed across the 'Net. HBGary employees spent days cleaning up the electronic mess and mending fences with customers.

On the RSA floor, a team put together the HBGary booth and prepared for the Razor announcement. CEO Greg Hoglund prepped his RSA talk, called "Follow the Digital Trail."

At RSA: "Anon: In it 4 the lulz..."
The HBGary team left for the night. When they returned the next morning, the opening day of the conference, they found a sign in their booth. It was from Anonymous.

"We had a lot to think about," HBGary's Vice President of Services, Jim Butterworth, told Ars. "We had just spent the previous week trying to clean things up and get ourselves back to normal, harden our systems, [and we] continued to hear the telephone calls and the threats—and I will add, these are very serious threats."

Now, with the appearance of the note in their RSA booth, the team felt not just electronically exposed; they felt physically threatened and stalked. "They decided to follow us to a public place where we were to do business and make a public mockery of our company," Butterworth said. "Our position was that we respected RSA and our fellow vendors too much to allow this spectacle to occur."

Instead, HBgary Inc. pulled out of the conference. ZDNet journalist Ryan Naraine snapped a photo from the show floor:
