View Full Version : Science What accent would you prefer to have?

A lot of us probably have flat midwestern voices with no discernible accent to most of America. But that is an acc(id)ent of birth, and merely a function of where, and to whom, we were born.

Assume for a moment that you were born and raised somewhere else, but then eventually morphed to live your exact same life to date, including your current living location, job, beliefs and philosophies, spouse, appearance (with or without hat), dog, car (paid off or not), and opinion about Matt Cassel. The only thing that is different is that you have an accent. What accent would you prefer to have?

The accompanying poll will include a list of commonly recognized accents.

The funny thing is, when I saw someone pick French I thought we had to have had a female voter arriving. French is a great accent for women, but it's a horrible accent for men.

I chose Australian. Not a heavy "Crocodile Dundee" one, just a light Aussie/Kiwi twang. I think American women would find it sexy. And I certainly find it sexy on women. Try listening to Olivia Newton-John or Lucy Lawless talk without getting a raging boner. (Same goes for women with English accents. I once worked with an Indian dot-not-feather girl who was from England. She was tiny, thin, and brown, and smokin' hot. And when she opened her mouth to speak and that English accent came out, I swear men stopped in their tracks.)

I find the Southern and Boston accents to sound incredibly stupid. Yes, I'm from Boston. No, I don't talk like that, thank God.

My first thought was Australian, but those accents are strong enough that I think you risk misunderstandings on occasion, or people staring at you blankly and saying "yes" when you ask them where the nearest emergency room is.

English was my second thought (not cockney), because it carries a civilized bearing, but British accents aren't that unusual and are easy to fake.

After serious thought, I went with Scottish. It's unusual, it's got a positive connotation to it, and I think most people can easily understand it.

and a cockney is someone who was born in or was able to Hear the bell of the london tower (not actually ringing, but close enough if they were)when born, or an "east ender"

I was torn between Austrailian and Russian. Why has the Southern accent gotten so many votes? I don't see anything wrong w/ it, and I think it's sad the stereotype it has gotten but there is no way in hell I would want to sound like that. Russian just sounds kinda like a bad ass, so I picked that.

I'm going Scottish.

The wife and I spent our 1st Anniversary in Whistler, BC where we honeymooned - played golf for a week at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club.

First day we were paired with another couple - he was Scottish and she was from the States.

Dude sounded exactly like Sean Connery, and he knew it.

After many Kokanees, I got the guy repeating all the good lines from Celebrity Jeopardy on SNL.

Good shots were routinely greeted with, "Suck it, Trebek" or "Your mother's a whore."

We'll never forget that guy.
