Switzerland rejects tighter gun controls (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12441834)

As you may or may not know, Switzerland is one of the most pro-gun rights countries in Europe, a little tiny oasis of freedom in a sea of gun bans and heavy restrictions. (military service is compulsory, once you finish, you are allowed to take some of your weapons home and keep them for life)

Some Swiss gun control weiners apparently had this big campaign about how suicides would be more likely with guns at home, having guns at home is too dangerous, etc, and over the objections of the government they forced a referendum which would require all gun owners to store their weapons at military depots.

Polls showed that this new law might narrowly pass, but the gun owners apparently turned out in force to beat it 57%-43%.

Lots of guns in Switzerland. Lots of murders, too. Law-abiding citizens who carry guns generally wind up murdering people. It's a fact.

actually, that was a big problem over there for the gun-control people. The murder rate is pretty low in Switzerland compared to the rest of europe, so they had to find a different boogeyman. Apparently the Swiss suicide rate was a bit high, so they decided to blame guns for that.

Not just by putting a gun in your freaking mouth.

Head in the oven, drinking poison, and the classic jumping off the bridge are some of my favorites

the classic jumping off the bridge

A bridge... when you have an Alp nextdoor? Such a waste.

What if it's a bridge like this?

(Yes, I know this particular one is in Germany. But you get my point.)

another bit of useless trivia: apparently in switzerland a big referendum can not pass unless both the popular vote and a majority of "cantons" (basically like states in the US) pass it. Some cantons have a ton of people, and others are tiny with only a few tens of thousands of rural gun owners, but they all get an equal say for that second requirement.

The popular vote was sort of close (No, by 57ish to 43ish), but the cantonal vote was a landslide No (20-6)

Thats kind of cool because you cant have a majority of tiny little "states" pass something, nor can you have a couple huge cities pass something, it has to be both, sort of like our bicameral congress.

Given that, it doesn't look like gun bans will ever pass anytime soon in Switzerland.
