View Full Version : Football Will you be personally affected by the lockout on a financial level?

I just want to see who here will lose on a monetary level if the NFL has a lockout.
I will personally lose between 4k-5k at the minimum in appearance fees and whatnot (I host MNF parties here in Vegas).
Anybody else?

This.
No NFL Sunday ticket=much smaller bill.
And more Black Ops....probably. Maybe.

No.
I'll gain more sundays for bow hunting, I'll cut my Satellite package to a level lower and lose NFLN and Sunday Ticket and save a pretty good chunk of change.
After the baseball strike, my heart has never gotten back into that game. I like football more, but I'll watch college.

Won't lose any money on football. but i'll spend more on hunting type shit in the fall if i don't have anything going on sundays.

I dont like to be productive on Sundays...:D
I will also pay less in TV costs, but thats only $200...
Directv will lose some cash obviously--wonder if they'll be happy paying the NFl for a product they are not recieving..
MY radio station and company will lose mega $$$--we have at least 7 MNF parties that we host between my station and the other 5, including ESPN and Fox Radio. Plus advertisers who just want to promote their parties that we arent apart of..Im talking maybe $200k...and thats probably a low estimate.
That hurts all of the employees in the long run.

I'd imagine that most people will actually GAIN financially given that it's us that are financing the whole NFL extravaganza anyway. I'll save around $300 on NFLST, probably $500 on tickets to games that I won't go to, and hundreds more on the food and booze that I typically buy for our Sunday get-togethers with the family.
Of course, I'll probably get bored and throw that money at something else, like MLB or NHL tickets. I seriously doubt it'd add up to more than a grand though.

I might lose around $300.00 annually. Even though I don't, I plan to win my fantasy football league each year. :p

Not too many people here in an industry that makes money off football other than me?
from Sept to Dec I will lose over $900 a month pay...thats gonna hurt.

No Sunday Ticket means more cash in my pocket. I guess I won't be buying any new Chiefs stuff, either. Of course, I buy everything on ebay now, so they weren't making any money off me in merchandise anyway.
I feel bad for people like stadium workers. But the idea of DirecTV taking it in the ass kind of makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I read somwhere that the money that DTV will pay to the league in 2011 is more like a loan than an actual payout.
I'm not sure about details, but they are supposed to get return on that money in the future.
I could be wrong about that, since it's been sometime since I believe that I saw that.

Yeah, I'm 99% sure you're right. Like you, I don't understand the details, but I don't think DirecTV (and the other networks) are literally going to be paying for nothing.
EDIT: Actually, it appears that the DirecTV deal is different than the deals with the networks, so DTV WOULD get screwed by this.

Most of us will save hundreds on tickets not bought, Sunday Ticket not purchased, etc.
Not to mention what we will now do with our Sunday afternoons, Sunday nights, Monday nights, and sometimes Thursday night and Saturday afternoons.
I wonder if this wont make people aware of how much time they sink into the NFL and what they could do to improve their life with all those hours. Hopefully it has that effect on me and mine despite thefact that I will miss the Chiefs.

I still honestly believe that a CBA agreement will be worked out before the draft, so this is very possibly a moot conversation.

Overall, more $$ will stay at home with a lockout.
What a collection of overpaid jackholes from the owners on down .... ( a little venting sometimes feels good at tax time )

Just shows that while the primary issues are between the billionaires and the millionaires, there are still plenty of little guys that will get caught in the crossfire and be collateral damage if a lockout occurs. Here's hoping they get everything worked out in time.

Yeah I wasn't thinking of holes not punched in the wall and costs related to high blood pressure!
For real though, just assuming a person watches two games a week, think what you could do adding 6 daylight hours to the week. If you spent that time on your kids or your wife or working out or even just working, you could do some great things.

Not much. Just be doing something else instead of watching games on Sunday. I might replace it watching the college game replays for the games I missed on Saturday.

Hi Carlotta,
If there is a strike can't you/your station host "F' Em Monday Night" parties or create some other sort of football-alternate events that will draw crowds?
A top-shelf she-jock like yourself combined with maybe some contests/prizes/activities/show girls/stunt midgets in that whacky Vegas town?

I have a buddy who owns a small parking lot just a few minutes walk from the Ravens stadium. He'll lose a few K for sure. Dude's loaded though, I doubt he'll miss it.
Bar, restaurant, parking lot owners near any stadium will obviously suffer.

I'll save money on booze but end up spending it on tissues to dry my weeping eyes.
Football is pretty much the only thing I really enjoy watching on TV. Off season is torture.

There could be broad impact, I agree. For example if it weren't for the NHL, I would cancel my cable. There's just so little worth watching on TV anymore beyond sports.
Most of you dont live in NHL cities, but how many people only have direct tv because of the NFL? Or how many could live without ESPN, with no MNF? What about all the people who bought a special package for the NFL network?
These are probably all GOOD things in the end, but - lots of impact.
I wasn't going to renew my season tickets anyways, but lets just pretend I was going to.
I would save $900 on the 10 games (2 preseason + 8 regular season), $25 x 8 = $200 for Parking, $25+ x 8 = $200 plus on tailgating shit I bring every Sunday, Another $5 x 8 for gas to get to and from the stadium (or taking the trolley) = $40, Potential $125 for a Divisional or Wild Card Playoff Game, and $200 for an AFC Championship Game, plus an extra $100 on Team related shit I would buy to wear to the game. $1540 - $1765 saved.
The emotional damage if there wasn't a season would be at least $100,000 though.

Judging from last year I would save a shit load of money on hard alcohol, head ache medication and smokes. I would also be much less likely to punch/kick/shoot/throw things at my television. So I guess I would come out ahead.

If I owned a sports bar, or worse of chain of sports bars/restaurants I'd personally write a letter to the NFL to remind them that there's a TON of businesses that depend on them.
There's a lot of businesses out there that have to be crapping bricks about this for next year.

No NFL is going to kill me financially....I'll probably end up blowing a bunch of money taking my son to the Zoo on crisp autum Sunday afternoons. I can see myself pouring a gas money down the drain driving to see my grandmother for Sunday dinner instead of sitting at home watching football. The cost of taking the family out for a nice, relaxing Sunday brunch together is really going to hurt. None of this even takes into account the expense after pheasant season opens.

So no one on this board works in an industry that makes $ off the NFL?
Not even indirectly?
Hmm..
It would be a good idea for sports bars, Sports books, Directv and others who will without a doubt lose their ass, to come together and file a lawsuit?
Im not sure exactly based on what other losing $$$, but lawyers figure that shit out, right?

Just a guess but I think the NFL would have one of the most formidable legal teams in the world. If they didn't flat out crush a class action lawsuit they would tie it up in paperwork and rebuttals until they ate up all your resources.
This may be a blessing in disguise for peeps like you. If this does happen there's going to be a lot of NFL fans with disposable income looking for activities to fill up Sunday Afternoons and Monday Nights. Get creative, it may make you a fortune.

I travel to KC for 1-2 games a season (that is $2,000-$2,500 there with travel/ticket prices/hotel, etc.), I have the NFL Sunday Ticket so that is another few hundred $$$'s and I gamble on NFL games (I won't disclose that amount)... so I would save $$$ if there was a Lockout.
