http://www.kitguru.net/channel/faith/man-sends-200000-to-fake-internet-girlfriend-to-stop-kidnapping/

The 48 year old man ended up calling police because he believed his girlfriend had been kidnapped somewhere around London. He explained to the police that he started the online relationship over 2 years ago and in that time had wired over $200,000 to the womanís bank accounts. The bank accounts were in England, the US, Malaysia and even Nigeria. Oh dear.

have you fallen foul of a fake online girlfriend?
The police asked him for pictures and ID so they could track her, but the copy of the drivers license he was sent was a sample ID from Florida.

Officers then told him that he was a fraud victim and that his girlfriend never actually existed. He was said to be stunned at the news.

While many people will be laughing at him, we canít help but feel a little remorse for the poor bloke, that is a lot of money to send over the wire to someone you have never met.

KitGuru says: It highlights that people do fall foul of online fraud, even if many of us are pretty quick to pick up on fake emails and communications. KitGuru would like to think that we donít need to tell our readers to avoid sending substantial amounts of money, by wire transfer, to generals/girlfriends you have never met.

Repost police idc

I sometimes suspect my wife is fake. She's in the house and everything, but I've never really asked for her ID.

There was a story a few years ago of a Naval Officer who was the Disbursing Officer of a ship that fell for one of those Nigerian Money scams. He stole money from the ship to pay the scammers. This guy was a college graduate who should have been smart enough to know better.

It just goes to show you. It might be called common sense but that doesn't make it common to everybody.

That took some dedication on the part of those scammers. Setting up a two year long relationship with a guy, coming up with a back story, all the late night chat sessions. I bet if you break it down on an hourly basis, it ends up being...

25/hrs per week (3+ hours/night) x 52 weeks x 2 years = 2600 hours

$200,000/ 2600 = $76.92/hr.

Not bad, but I wonder how many dudes they had to chat up online who didn't send the money? If you factored that into the equation and said you had a 1 in 10 success rate, then you are looking at

$200,000 / 26,0000 = $7.69/hour. now you are chatting up old dudes online instead of working at Subway. That's no longer ambitious, just straight nasty.
