I didn't realize that Hot Wheels are younger than I am.

I don't know if this is historic, but I loved this as a kid:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6V-tuOf3dEOMG I completely forgot about that thing. A friend of mine had one when I lived in Topeka. Serious time waster. I loved it more than he did.

Looking at the Apollo capsule that awaits rescue, I realize that people in our generation may have been unique in the number of space-related toys we grew up with. Did you have any Major Matt Mason action figures?

That was banned in 1991 after a child in North Carolina ate part of the lid and strangled.

Had lots of space-related toys because I was enthralled with the space program as a kid, but alas, no Major Matt Mason. I think he was becoming phased out by the time I was deep in my post-toddler/pre-adolescent toydom (circa 1970-76).

no erector set either. I once hooked a dead bird up to my "table" i made on the erector set and plugged him in to the battery it came with. Tried to revive him. Didn't work. Mom caved and bought me a parakeet after that.

My personal top-ten all-time toys (based on recollection):

Authentic leather football
Football cards
Thinking Man's Football (board game)
Green plastic army men
Risk
My single-speed Huffy bicycle
Talking Football Game (board game, can't remember the exact name)
Hot Wheels cars
Fort Apache
The Game of Life

I'm not including all the wargames that would otherwise be atop this list, because I got into those beyond the age of 12.

I had a lot of Hot Wheels cars, including a special silver mustang that you could only get direct from Mattel by mail order, after buying x-number of Hot Wheel cars.

Wish I still had them, and my baseball card collection. Both would be worth a lot now.

Nephew got my Hot Wheels when I went off to college in the 1970s. Baseball card just got lost in the shuffle of moving from place to place.

I used to cut openings in the side, draw goal posts on either end, and with popsicle sticks and a penny you had a make-shift foosball/hockey game.

I didnt know of the sea version either. I had the other one though. The land version. Very cool toy for its time.

You should look into todays mini 'copters. For about 25 or 30 bucks you can have one that goes forward, back, left and right. They're still fun to play with and have become much easier to fly than the old helicopters.

Transformers were awesome but only from 1984-1986. All the first run toys were designed by a Japanese Toy company and were based on actual vehicles. Once Hasbro started adding more types of transformers and adding tons of new characters, the quality of the toys dropped off dramatically. the newer designs were abstract and convoluted.

I had one of these, and you were able to buy teams painted with specific jerseys. I had Chiefs, Bears, Cowboys, Raiders, and some others. Way cool, I think that's the exact play field I had too.
