Curious to see if we have any other athletes out here.

I don't have a stopwatch. Maybe I should see if one of my friends does and get some jackass to time me.

We ran 40's to practice for 60's (indoor track), it was good training for getting out of the blocks quick. I have no clue what my times were, that was 35 years ago. I remember the short guys always did the best.

everyone is going to have inflated numbers

it's like getting listed at 6'5" in high school basketball when you're 6'2"

high school football coaches gave out 4.5's like candy at my school...there were some 4.4's, too

and we had no black people...

and no one was running faster than a 4.7, 4.75 tops

I typically ran 4.9-5.1 if that makes you feel any better. And it was only once. I never touched 4.7 again. Hell, never got a 4.8

I had probably taken a huge dump just before the run... thats good for like 15 pounds right there.

Yeah, in high school.

Best time was 4.6 (stop watch) but I generally ran 4.7.

One of the guys ran a 4.5 and later played at Coffeyville, but then again, many of the guys I played with in high school went on to play college ball (some at the D-I level).

With that said, it was 27 years ago and athletes then don't look like athletes now.

What?

We always ran indoors on a flat concrete surface, usually barefoot.

What coach would time their players on a sloppy, muddy field in cleats?

4.6 but that was 8 years ago.

This on both accounts.

I did speed training @ Maryville the summer before my senior year. I ran a low 4.6 before we trained, but never got my "after" 40 times because I went on vacation to fish in MN. I am sure I got faster in straight line speed, but the biggest difference was made in agility.

If any of you have kids in sports and have the opportunity and ability to send them to one of these programs you should do it. They last 3 months through the summer typically -- I think 2 or 3 times a week, I don't remember anymore. Not real fun while you are running on the giant treadmill going 15 mph at 15 degree inclines for several minutes at a time (my friend reminded me of this via text). There are some more interesting plyo stuff or rubber bands. The 4 square was kind of fun, especially on one foot.

For me to "graduate" I had to run 20 mph, 0 degree incline, for 6 seconds.

I was 6'2" and roughly 180lbs then (ten pounds lighter now).

And a defribillator.

It must have been 20 year ago now, but one 4th of July the whole family was over at my folk's house. We had been eating all day and had a few drinks -- nothing crazy but a few. And it's about 90+ degrees out as usual for that time of year in KC. My brother and I start jawing at each other and decided to race around the house -- 3 times. Well we finished that activity and moved on to the heat stroke activity. We both just laid on the family room floor for the duration of the evening. Everyone else went to go watch fireworks.

Ran track and XC in college and ran a 4.7 at an all team pentathalon event we had. It was middle of the road, meaning the only people I was faster than were the shot putters. I whooped ass that same day in the 1000 meters though with a 2:26 (3rd Fastest).

I ran a 4.8 as a Sophomore in HS. I'm proud of that 4.8....Although I was faster as a Junior and Senior, but I didn't run the 40 those years....So I was probably in the 4.6 range during those last 2 years.

heh, I dont know if many people actually KNOW just how fast a 4.4 40 time really is.

I'll put it this way....the fastest track guy/WR on my old HS's football team (actually he was allstate in both sports) ran like a low 4.5.

and I can almost guarantee he's waaay faster than anyone that's ever posted here on CP.

Short Leash Hootie
03-03-2011, 12:42 AM
I don't think any of you retards realize how fast a 4.6 is...

you guys are just like my friend...who IS ONE OF THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED RUSHERS IN IHSA FOOTBALL HISTORY...

he was 5'10 200...he maxed bench 350 lbs as a senior...and he was an absolute BEAST...he was recently named to the all-decade team for football (graduated in 2003)...currently one of my roommates

according to him he ran a 4.5 in high school...and I know that's not true as he's been my best friend since we were 12 years old...

it's just high school stopwatch bullshit

no way that guy was as fast as LARRY JOHNSON...

maybe a 4.75...maybe

and he was a fast mother fucker

the fastest guy I know...he is an athletic specimen...and always has been...is way more honest...and he said the fastest 40 he ever ran was a 4.65 and he also graduated high school with me and he was easily the fastest guy in our school...and he did this at an acceleration clinic with actual equipment to measure a 40...

not high school football coaches trying to pump a false sense of "big dick" into their players...

shit our coach was timing white kids at 4.3

lmao

Short Leash Hootie

and you know what's funny

here will come a bunch of guys who were "easily in the 1000 lb. club" in high school...and blah blah blah...and blah blah blah

you're all full of shit

the kid I described above was a freak...he's a chubby mister now...but when he was throwing up twice his body weight in bench and running a 4.7 while beasting the shit out of opposing football teams playing FB and gaining 8 YPC...all while being diabetic...it was insane

and I'll never have any sympathy or be impressed by Jay Cutler for managing his diabetes and being a football player...it isn't hard...this kid got diagnosed when he was 12 and after he figured out how to handle it no one would ever have even known he had it...all he did was drink more Gatorade...

I laughed my ass off when the sideline reporters would be like "and Cutler has to prick his finger 3 times a quarter to make sure his blood sugar is right!" like he was some sort of hero!

this kid drank like a fish, ate whatever he wanted, downed Mountain Dew...and managed to put up one of the best careers for a running back in Illinois high school football...

Rudy lost the toss

We had a white guy by the name of Zwiggi or something who played football for our school. Rumor got around that he ran a 4.2 40. They even wrote a article about his draft prospects. I knew it was complete bullshit, but the poor kid put up his own website with highlight reels and timed 40s. Pro day comes around and he runs a 4.5. New article comes out talking about the wind and poor field conditions.

4.5 is lightning fast

and that kid was running 4.8's (which is also pretty damn fast for an amateur athlete)

Actually, you're full of shit. At my high school, there was a "Wall of Fame" for 1,000 pound club members and that was 27 years ago.

I witnessed several guys "make" the 1,000 pound club. They had to squat, bench and dead-lift in less than 60 minutes in order to make the club.

I never made it. I had an injury my senior year that kept me out of lifting for almost three months. On the last day of school, I could only hit 935 pounds.

But considering I only weighed 170 at graduation, that was pretty good. And before you call "bullshit", not only do I have hundreds of classmates that will support my claim, but pics as well.

I'm talking about a 17 year old kid who was an all-decade IHSA running back...stats comparable to Mike Alstott...who was FREAKISHLY strong and somehow thought he was running 4.45 40s because of our high school coaches and their stopwatch politics...

my baseball team in high school was stacked...we were awesome...we faced a guy named Ryan Bird who was rumored to have a "102 MPH" fastball...the newspaper reported it and everything...he was rumored to get a 60% scholarship to a big 10 school (which is unheard of for baseball players)...

we faced him....dude probably didn't even hit 90 on the gun and we torched him...he lasted less than 2 innings...it was hysterical

when I lived in Lenexa and OP growing up (until I was 12) I went to school with ZERO black people...and I went to big school districts

so yeah...you're right...I didn't see a ton of speed...but I know 95% of this board is white

so I know there isn't a whole lot of 4.5 speed around here

just watch the fucking combine...

he has NFL size and speed...

what college did he go to for track? for football?

Talk about reverse discrimination although really when you think about it there is no such thing as reverse discrimination. Discrimination is discrimination, PERIOD.

I had several football scholarships to mostly DII and DIII schools and one DI but everyone of them said, kid you not, "although you run the ball well we already have our "thoroughbreds" in the backfield we need help in the secondary."

So I played baseball instead. Was a pitcher:thumb:

I'm pretty sure Dane is white...

Dane if you had tons of black teammates than I will agree that perhaps you did see a ton of freak athletes...

but where I grew up in Kansas...and where I grew up in Illinois...

it was white, white, white (just like this board)...and 4.5 basically didn't exist

1 out of 1000

Well, you're wrong. I had teammates that played in the SEC, Big 8, Southwest Conference, the major Junior Colleges (Coffeyville & Butler, both whom feed D-I schools, the NFL and won Juco National championships, etc.).

And again, you missed my statement earlier: Guys 27 years ago are NOTHING like the guys coming out of school today. NOTHING.

I'd bet that during my three years out of school, maybe ONE, instead of 50, would be offered scholarships today.

It's a different world today. But that doesn't mean that guys weren't gifted athletically.

just watch the NFL combine

not many white people ever break a 4.5

so it makes me laugh that a 5'10 210" "hoss" with 4.45 speed couldn't get any D1 offers/looks or anything

I was hitting 60 when I was still playing little league.

Yet, I played in the outfield. I didn't pitch because if I tried to throw it as hard as I could I would have probably made Rick Ankiel look like Greg Maddux.

The impressive part isn't hitting 80mph. It's controlling it to be worth a damn.

You told someone to read a little closer to your post in order to get your point.

Well, I will ask the same of you. But I mentioned an injury to my arm. Yes the scouts were drooling and wanted me to come out after my jr. yr but I chose stay in for my Sr. season because I wanted to complete my degree. Sure I could have made a bigger $$ coming out as a junior but baseball believe it or not was secondary. It was important to me to get my degree. Well, the beginning of my Sr. season, opening day tore my rotator cuff and never was the same. Never could break 78 mph. Well now you know the rest of the story.:thumb:

uhm

brah

that's not how baseball works

you don't "come out"

you can be drafted after graduating high school...or after you turn 21 (or be a junior in college)...

you don't "come out"...

Michael Vick was drafted to play baseball and he hadn't played baseball since 7th grade or "asked" to be drafted...he just was...and I think in the 13th round.

If you were throwing 90 MPH as a lefty in college as a junior...you would have been drafted...period. And very highly.

and you wouldn't have had to come out, or declare, or ask, or anything...they would have just drafted you...and then notified you...and then you could have said "uhm sorry I'm going to complete my degree"...

so again...

sorry

you're "misremembering" things

However, I went to a trades school instead. Wish I didn't too be honest. I miss baseball alot, but thats life. I could probably still take acouple classes at a JC and play, I'm only 23, but after being out of the sport for 6 years I'm not in the same shape.

JFC, no offense but that sounds ridiculously retarded.

It was. It was just the good ol boy network. About 5 years later a new principal came in and fired that coach. They brought in my cousin who was the D-Cordinator at Park Hill South to take the job. He turned the program around and modernized it as far as the weight room and summer 7 on 7 camps go, as well as the schemes. I think in his first 3 years they went to a state semi and state quarterfinal, but eventually the honey moon ended and he met resistance at trying to bring to St. Joe what the big KC schools do... too much work and complaints by lazy kids and parents. He didn't get his contract renewed and they haven't sniffed the playoffs since.

Dude, again, running a high 4.5 is not a huge deal. It doesn't mean you would be a great football player. Larry Johnson weighed 230lbs. A Guy that size doing it, doesn't happen every day, but there are fast ass kids EVERYWHERE.
If you weigh less than 200lbs, and you run a 4.5 you haven't accomplished SHIT. It doesn't mean you can catch, tackle, read bocks, break tackles, and sure as shit not cover a receiver. It just means that you have a little track potential, and not much at that.

I am white and routinely was clocked in the 4.3-4.4 range. I also was a sprinter in track. I also wasn't the fastest guy in school that belonged to our white RB who got a college scholarship to play football. We would race all the time because he ran track as well and we either tied or he beat me by a step or two.

I was a midget in high school. Maybe 5 5 and weighed barely 120-130 lbs.

I also didn't make the 1000 club in fact I don't think we had one but I did bench 225 and my squat was 350

Normally I'm a fan of your posts, but you're a fucking dick head in this thread, no doubt.

You seem to forget that athletes are just people, not super heroes. just because you and your friend aren't fast doesn't mean that other people aren't.

You have 350 lb men running in the 5's and you don't think it's possible for a guy half his weight to shave half a second off of that?

Get real dude.

I'd assume that most high school athletes would range from the 4.6's-5.6's.

I was on a fishing trip once and was puttering around this bay with the trolling motor. We had eaten a huge fish fry a bit earlier, and I sat down to fish and put in a chew. Well, as often happens when you put in a chew, my bowels thought I must be sitting on the can, cuz I began to hear this horrid gurgleing and rumbling in my gut. I started heading to shore to go take care of business. my buddy was using the trolling motor, and about 500 years from shore I had to ask him "dude, think you can use the big motor?". He obliged, and sped me over to the shore. Unfortunatly, there were women and children near there, so I was gonna have to go find the outhouse. There is was, a solid 100 years away up a slight hill. Now, I dont know about you, but once my sphincter knows it is near, its game over. I didn't have an electronic timer, but my buddy swears he timed me at 9 seconds flat from the boat, up the dock, and into the outhouse. So there's that.

Once upon a time, most CP members said they could throw a football 70 yards.

Now we're looking for accuracy about other athletic achievements? Good luck. Regarding a 90 mph fastball: most have never seen one live in the batter's box. And I don't care what you thought you heard from a coach/fellow player in high school.

Most Division II pitchers top out in the upper 80s. Many less than this. Division I starters tend to sit in the low 90s, and there's some damn good pitching at the JUCO level, too.

Hootie, you are the biggest idiot ive ever heard. Seriously. You come on here and call everyuone a liar because some say they ran a sub 4.7 40 in high school. You continually mak references to having no "black people" on the team, and stating that without "black people" on the team, there is no way anyone could be that fast. Hate to bust your bubble, but there are literally thousands upon thousands of white highschool athletes that can run a sub 4.6 40 on an electronic timer. Many run track, many play football, some soccer, and some are just plain fast as shit kids. I ran a 4.67 in high school my junior year at 5'9 and 167lbs, and that was almost 30 years ago. We did have a few "black people" on the team, and one of them was faster than I was, the others were not.

This whole "black guy" thing is stupid. Yeah, there were a few black guys that played football at our high school but none of them were even remotely special and none went on to play in college at any level.

From 1982-1984, I'd guess that somewhere between 30-40 guys played college ball at some level, with a few going directly from high school to big time D-I schools. Most played at the Juco's and some played at the smaller schools like Emporia State, Baker, etc.

BTW, I was not a member of the 1000 club.

I don't recall anyone joining the 1,000 pound club in either 1983 or 1984, although one of the guys in 1984 (and one of my best friends to this day) could have done it easily, especially considering he benched 350 his junior year but by that time, he was burned out on football and weight lifting.

I was there the last time I can recall someone making the 1,000 pound club, which was the last day of school in 1982 but I could be wrong. I've haven't been to that high school since the devastating event that happened in July 1987 and I doubt I'll ever return.

At that time I ran a 4.47 on a stopwatch (I had grown an inch and gained 25 lbs). No I didn't get drafted but did attend a couple FA tryouts. In high school I was around a 4.5 which was above average. When I got to college, I learned how to run. A good 40 time is in the start. Master the start and you can run a good time. Not sure what my 40 time actually was, but I know the bunch of guys after me all went by with better numbers.

I was insanely strong in school, but my arthritic knees (which would keep giving out) was the main reason I never made any sports teams (well that and my JW parents refusing to let me). I almost cracked the 1000lb club in grade 11, (was at 930 bench, incline, squats and cleans ) . But unfortunatly not for long, my joints started giving out.
Still have wicked work strength, not many folks can climb 2-3 flights of stairs carrying a 65lb box of CGC plaster in both hands 10-15 times consecutivly, THEN start work for the day.

Not at my high school.

Bench, squat, deadlift. Most guys that made the club did 250 bench, 350 squat and 450 deadlift.

Although my friend that hit the club in '82 did it with a 335 bench.

I don't think don beebe could break a 4.4 in his prime and we have guys on cp breaking a 4.3...whatever. my point is...kust because your high school coach timed your 35 at 4.5 doesn't mean you were actually that fast.

Yeah, you're right. Me or any of the other guys here could have been faster.

The error you refer to could work both ways.

I was insanely strong in school, but my arthritic knees (which would keep giving out) was the main reason I never made any sports teams (well that and my JW parents refusing to let me). I almost cracked the 1000lb club in grade 11, (was at 930) .

Those #s look about right for making the 1000 club. You don't have to bench 300 to make it. I had guys in HS that had insane dead lifts.

Well, considering that the head coach of our school is one of the best high school coaches in the country, that same coach and school went to the 6A State Championship three years in a row (and won it once) and a huge number of guys went on to play at the college level (and one later became a D-I head coach), I'd say that our 40 times were pretty goddamned accurate.

My HS 1000# club was bench, squat, and clean. Never made it but got close. My clean wasn't good enough. Ran a 4.66 twice in a row at my Culver Stockton recruit day. Signed, then didn't go. Got married out of hs and had two kids. Currently coach hs football. What Hootie is saying has a lot of truth. Not all coaches time right. I hear stories of kids running 4.4's all the time and laugh. There is two kids around here who can run a legit 4.4 and they both are running under 11.0 in the hundred. One was timed at TCU this summer and all other kids saying that I laugh at and tell them no way. By the way 1 of those two kids are white.

P.S. I threw 71 at my nephews bday party at the batting cages a couple months ago. My arm hurt for days. I just knew i could throw harder than that.

Only if your coach is a retard. I played 4 years of HS, and attended a football camp, and never saw any coaches who didn't try their best to record accurate times. What would be the point? They are taking records to assess players. What would be the benefit of running 40s if they weren't going to try and record accurate times.
Player height, and weight listings are skewed sometimes, but how in the world does that have any ties to performance records.
They don't list a players forty times for the fans, or opposing coaches.
That would be like a coaches marking down a player as maxing out in bench at 300 when he only lifted 250. Not to mention there are two different coaches clocking players at the same time. What, do they decide before a player runs that they are going to shave .2 seconds off a players times before he even runs?

The point is, Hootie, is that if everyone was being timed by their coaches at 4.5, it was accurate for the day. We didn't have the sophistication that exists today, but that doesn't make those times inaccurate.

My senior year in high school, we had two guys run a 4.5. One went on to be a starting safety at Coffeyville and the other quit mid-season and never played football again.

Fast forward 30 years and running 4.5 in high school is so common it's ridiculous. Look at Jadevon Clowney for instance. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE I ever met or played against in the early 80's looked like that, including Rodney Peete.

I ran a 4.85 on our practice field in cleats.

Fairly quick, nothing amazing. I was about 6 ft, 160 lbs so with that build, that kind of speed was just enough to get me some special teams run and some 3rd down duty (we were a triple option team and I just wasn't big enough to be a useful blocker). I also played some nickle DB.

I'd have rather been bigger than faster, all things considered.

Not many people take me up on it, after they watch me flick a sanding sponge onto teh front stilt pad of my right leg,. take a step and snatch it out of the air when I flip kick it up if I`ve dropped it.

well props

I'm sure being a 90 MPH lefty pitcher you were probably drafted within the 1st 5 rounds and signed a pretty nice 6 figure bonus

congrats

Our quarterback was a LHer that threw in the high 80's with regularity. He didn't get drafted out of HS.

He went to Wichita State and pitched there until he graduated. He got drafted in the 3rd round by the Red Sox and had some arm trouble. I think he's still bouncing around the BoSox organization in AA somewhere as a reliever. He's probably 28 or 29 at this point, so I don't imagine he's going to ever 'make it'. (Tough break, he was a damn nice guy. Valedictorian, Wendy's HS Heisman finalist, Varsity basketball captain; the works. He had every reason to be an asshole but was as good a guy as you'd ever meet).

The point being that you're just wrong. There's no shortage of lefties that can chuck the ball that don't get drafted out of HS. He had to pay his dues in college before he got a look and when he did he was even taken quite high (so it's not as though the talent wasn't there). Sometimes you just don't draw the right eyes your way.

EDIT: Looks like he threw a handful of innings at AAA last season, so it appears he's still kicking around out there.
