Brut means it's dry (not sweet). You want something sweet, so make sure the label says "Doux"

Yeah, I was going to recommend the Barefoot brand. It's nothing special, but they taste decent and don't cost much. The specific type just depends on your tastes.

regarding "champagne"... you can get some decent California sparkling wines but to impress a chick go with a Spanish Cava or Italian Prosecco... both are super cheap and make you look cool

Personally I think for quality/price a good Cava is the way to go!

You can get Freixenet Extra Dry at a decent grocery store... or got to BevMo and get one of these...

http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?D=cava&Ntx=mode%2bmatchall&Dx=mode%2bmatchall&Ntk=All&Nty=1&N=0&Ntt=cava&Ns=SalesPrice|1&ProductID=33714&No=0

http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?D=prosecco&Ntx=mode%2bmatchall&Dx=mode%2bmatchall&Ntk=All&Nty=1&Ns=HighestRating|1&Ntt=prosecco&N=0&ProductID=19321&No=0

just be sure to TRY to get an Extra Dry if that is what she likes.. or a Brut if she prefers that.

I like the Pinot Grigio version of Barefoot as well. If you can spend a little more then Gloria Ferrer or Mumm of Napa both have excellent choices. The blanc de blanc type is my favorite, but blanc de noir is also good.

If the BevMo you're going to is decent, just tell them that. Say you want something a little sweet but maybe a little nicer than this one. They usually know what the hell they're talking about.

Good advice... speaking of BevMo.. they are decent liquor stores and seem to have an ok selection, but I was led to believe they were this giant liquor superstore! Everyone in San Diego told me about the BIG liquor store...

The first time I went, I walked around the store 3 times before I realized there really weren't any extra rooms that I somehow was missing...

Now THIS is a liquor store!

Tell her she's not in a rap video, and introduce her to wine so she can drink like a grown up.

Get a bottle of Chateau Ste Michelle Riesling (not the dry one), serve chilled and a bottle of MacMurray Pinot Noir (you can open it slightly chilled, but leave it out to breathe after that). Serve it with a platter of mild cheeses and crackers and some good chocolates.

Damn...you people are absolutely worthless. The guy asks for a good bottle of $20 sparkling and he gets inundated with cava, asti and shit like that? Might as well get a $5 bottle of Cooks and add a tablespoon of sugar to it...

Okay, here's the real deal:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eCWS1C5FM_o/TVRuwjUnQDI/AAAAAAAAAW8/x_-eJQdBM6w/s1600/J_RRVCuvee20NVBrut.jpg

One of my favorite domestic sparklings. Great initial notes of apple and pear, dry but holds the fruit notes long on the palate. Very close proximity to much more expensive true French champagnes. The presentation/bottle is elegant and sexy.

Here is some subjective trade press notes on it:

Celebrating twenty years of winemaking excellence, J Cuvée 20 proudly displays an exceptional, stylish assemblage from cool-climate vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley.

This J non-vintage Brut gracefully opens up with crisp lemon peel, honeysuckle and delicate yeast aromas. Upon entry, these notes follow through to a mix of Fuji apple and grapefruit interlaced with toast, caramel and almond flavors on the mid-palate. The acidity adds just enough liveliness and the citrus zest leads to a lingering, warm pear and lush finish. Demonstrating an illustrious combination of yesterday and today, its fresh exuberance showcases layers of depth and complexity.

critical acclaim:
"With mid-summer comes the annual release of J's nonvintage Cuvée 20. This year's bottling is richer than last year's, and offers broad citrus, raspberry, vanilla and yeasty brioche flavors. The wine feels clean, vibrant and smooth. "

Wine Enthusiast

"Pale yellow-gold hue with very active bubbles. Appealing scents of Golden Delicious apple, white peach and brioche. Foamy flavors of peach and apple. Hints of almond and nutmeg in the juicy close. "

You can thank me later. In fact, don't worry about it. Just get it and suitably impress whoever it is you are trying to impress.
