View Full Version : Birthday "Happy Birthdays" on Facebook

As a preface, it's my birthday, but I don't really make a big deal of such things. So don't feel like you should wish me a happy birthday in this thread. In fact, please don't, as it kind of proves my point. Also, those of you who actually are friends with me on there and have done so shouldn't feel bad about it. My thread is about the phenomenon much more than any individual's actions.

As the day has gone on, I've grown increasingly bitter about all of the "happy birthday" posts I've gotten on Facebook. Way back in the olden days, if someone cared about you enough to wish you a happy birthday, they had to make you a card or write a letter and send it to you. Or perhaps make a phone call. Then Hallmark came along, and suddenly people could send you a card without having to put much more thought into it than picking a card they liked. With the advent of email, it became easier to just bop someone a quick message on their birthday, but at least that still took a little thought.

Facebook, to me, has made the entire act of wishing people happy birthday a completely mindless and impersonal activity. All someone has to do is glance to the side of their screen and see the list of birthdays, then spend 5 seconds posting "happy birthday" or some other nonsense. It takes more effort and thought to take a crap than it does to wish someone a happy birthday on Facebook.

I don't really care when it comes down to it, but what bugs me is that people come out of the woodwork who you NEVER talk to that want to wish you a happy birthday. A girl I went to HIGH SCHOOL with, didn't like at the time, and haven't spoken to in about 12 years, posted happy birthday on my wall.

I'm not a heavy user of Facebook - I mainly use it to stalk people and occasionally post pictures of things I've got going on. But I'd estimate that the quantity of "happy birthday" posts on my wall today is higher than the total number of posts that I've had on there in the past year. It's stupid.

I don't really have a point to all of this, and I'm probably just bitter. I just wish that, if people really cared enough, they'd put out a little effort. If they don't, then don't worry about it.

So I guess the basic idea is...Facebook sucks. The end.

Fuck. People wouldn't even know if Facebook didn't "remind" them, and by "remind" them, I mean tell them in the first place.

Oh, and I wished you a happy birthday on Facebook first. :D

Oh, and I wished you a happy birthday on Facebook first. :D

That's kind of my point. If people don't know it was my birthday before Facebook told you, then they didn't care enough to put out the effort in the first place.

And thanks for the birthday wishes! :p

I don't like the Facebook birthday thing because it feels forced. I'll see that someone has a birthday and then a bunch of people will say, "Happy Birthday!" and I'll feel like I'm a jerk if I don't type "Happy Birthday!", so I go on there and type it and then feel annoyed by doing it out of obligation.

But my birthday was last month and it was my first birthday since joining Facebook and I found myself anxiously awaiting what would happen. Would people wish me a happy birthday? How many? Would they be just as annoyed? And my birthday came and went and not a single person wished me happy birthday and then I felt kind of bad about it because these are supposedly my Facebook friends and f**k them all if they can't get on there and type "Happy Birthday!" to me once a year. I mean, really. Not a single person? I'm not that unpopular, am I? And I thought that, well, maybe if nobody really likes me and they just friended me out of obligation maybe I should just defriend them and end the charade and I'll just have my birthday party with my wife and my cat and screw all of these worthless two-faced people who call me a friend and then won't wish me a happy birthday. And then I realized that my Facebook profile was set to not show my birthday.

First of all, Happy Birthday DaFace.

Second, why are you friends with a girl who you knew in highschool who didn't even like you? Have you talked to her since friending you? If not, then maybe that's part of the problem.

Well, I don't have your address, so a card was out of the question. I don't have your phone number, so calling was not an option, either. You will take my Facebook birthday wish, AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!

Please don't ban me.

Be thankful you were not born today. They save the cord blood and the cord it's self. Then they break it out every year along with video of your birth. Before they break out the cake and ice cream. Wow. I bet the save some breast milk for future birthday ice cream now.

Earlier this week I remembered it was my brother's birthday. I signed on to facebook just for the purpose of wishing him a happy birthday. That was a lot of effort because I wouldn't normally get on facebook more than once a month. Now I'm worried that he'll think I didn't really remember his birthday and just saw it when I got on FB. I normally think of him at least a few times in passing during his birthday, but this year, thanks to FB, actually went to the trouble of wishing him a good one. And now DaFacebook makes me feel bad about that.

I actually hid my birthday information a couple days before my birthday last year just to avoid that. Then I un-hid it shortly after midnight and a couple of my PST friends busted me.

I dunno, I never knew untill Thursday I even made enough of a blip on the radar of life to 118 people for them to do so.
Many of them I hadn't even seen since I left highschool and only got reaquainted in the last month.

I've always hated my birthday, from my JW upbringing, to it's reminding me of the 2 people who brought me into this world, then turned their backs on me over religion.
To the fact I can never remember having a *good day on March 10th. in my entire life, Here's a few highlights.

-brother put me in hospital

-Lost the engine in my 87' Freightliner,

- 8 years Lost the engine in my 96' Freightliner

-got tosseed in jail in a dry county for carrying a half gallon of Jack from my truck to a motel in the open, Judge was gone for teh weekend and since I was a high "flight risk" as a long haul trucker, I got locked up for the weekend)

- Had a super over sized load, electronic tree harvester come to life, nail an over pass (which later shut was down for 3 months)and almost kill the cop escort on the ILL / In line........ again to jail we go

-Led by police the wrong way across the Chicago Skyway after shutting it down with 3 supper over sized loads for 35 mins on a Friday after noon at 445pm.........At least I wasn't alone in that cold jail cell

-Layed a truck over avoiding an accident on black ice landing me in the weeds dead center of the scale pad only in the ditch....They feed ya good in an OH lock up

-had a gun pointed in my face by 3 very large very black men who wanted my wallet and cash more than I did one morning in NYC, I later got picked up by the NYPD desperatly trying to breakinto my Truck in nothing but my underware........NY Lock ups are NO FUCKING FUN wearing nothing but your fruit of teh looms.

-Locked out of the cab of my truck after waking up to take a piss, standing on the running boards, fallikng off and being locked out bare ass naked, in a rest area, in a snow storm, 10 miles away from the State Prison, have the cop come by while your breaking in to your truck........No jail, but I did enjoy a $64 ticket for public defication, his handcuffs, and back seat of his car. Special thanks for Officer Cooper for not actually laughing in my face but like hell to his partner, And for offering me his coat instead of shooting me.

-Having a contractor screw you for $17,285.00

-This year was no different, got bad news after the test results from my blood work came back

You starting to seea trend?
March 10th absolutly would not exist in my world if I could help it.

Anyway
My family (wife son, all the inlaws) ALL know don't even bring it up to me.
Shove your cards up your ass it's my day to forget so piss off.

All changed 530 am when my son met me in the hallway looked at me at the wife urging and said "Happy birthday Daddy",
As I leaned down to give him a hug, I ,looked at the Wife with hate in my eyes, over my sons shoulder , he stood back then started singing happy birthday.
Came home later that day, and a whole bunch of people, who out of them all I only interact with say 15-20, all took a split second to think about me.

Think i'll stop hating my birthday , and start just making it my day.

I don't wish people happy birthday on Facebook for this reason. I just ignore everyone's birthdays. Sometimes I feel like a dick for it, but the birthday wishes on FB just seem so empty and meaningless that I refuse to participate.

I actually suspect that there might be a FB app that posts a canned HBD message automatically on any friend's wall who has a birthday. Not interested enough to investigate further, though.

I couldn't agree more. I refuse to wish someone a happy birthday that I haven't talked to in 10 years. And I don't feel like figuring out where the line is between those people and my good friends. So I don't wish anyone a happy birthday. I thought about posting something on my b-day this year requesting that no one wish me a happy birthday, but I knew it wouldn't help. People see your name on the right side of their screen, they click it, type "have a good one, LOL" and move on with their creeping.

I have quite a few days throughout the year that I have multiple friends with birthdays.

I fully admit I go to their wall, copy the generic "Happy Birthday" post someone made, post it to their wall, and my other friends walls.

Yeah, i'm lazy.

personally, I think that function is great, because sometimes you do forget about birthdays, or even a common acquaintance B-day pops up you still want to tell them to have a good time then you pop a birthday well wish. because no one told you and it's a good reminder.

On a side note, did you happen to catch the CNBC documentary on Facebook? Aparently FB is now the country's (if not the world's) largest holder of peoples' personal information - their name, birthday, addresses, phone numbers, assorted other "personal" contact information.... than any other agency anywhere. It's really kinda scary.
