I just signed up for a safety deposit box in the bank downstairs from where I work.

After filling out the paperwork and getting my keys, I checked the box to make sure it was empty.

Like something out of a movie, stuffed in the very back was a small envelope, approximately a half-inch thick, full of cash.

The envelope was addressed to "Smiley."

I assume at this point you could be accurately described as "Smiley".

I didn't get to count it. And since it's a security check, there was a bank employee standing right there. I turned it over, where they'll check the claims office, and if there's no claim, it'll go to the state as unclaimed property.

Wouldn't they be able to contact whoever had the box before you? If they're, um, dead, wouldn't it go to their estate?

That's what I assumed, but the bank lady said they had to see if a claim had been filed for it. I guess it's possible it was in there before the previous box holder. It was wadded up in the back. Easily could have been missed. If I hadn't actually put my hand in the back of the box, I wouldn't have found it.

That seems like BS. I thought if you turned in money and no one claimed it, it was yours. Let this be a lesson...the next time anyone gets a safety deposit box, make sure you have a cash-sized envelope that you can switch out in case there's one in the box.

Who is probably dead. Oh well.

That's the frustrating part. There probably is no claim, so it's going to go to the state to sit as unclaimed property for the next 20 years.

Bummer. Of course, 99.9% of us would take it out and say "what the hell is this?" as a natural reaction, and the bank goon would have seen you do it, so you wouldn't have gotten away with it in any event.

If I were quick enough Id have looked the safety deposit box over, said, Looks empty to me, put whatever I was getting the box for in it and let them close it up. Come back a week later needing into the box then walk out with the envelope of money.

Bummer. Of course, 99.9% of us would take it out and say "what the hell is this?" as a natural reaction, and the bank goon would have seen you do it, so you wouldn't have gotten away with it in any event.

But in reality Id more than likely do ^this.

I'd have turned it in anyway. Unless it was full of thousand dollar bills, I don't think it would make that much of a difference in my life to take something that wasn't mine.

I thought that if someone didn't claim it in 30 days or something, the money would go to the person who found it?

Absolutely. And after you, they'll be going after that bank security guard, but he'll at least have a lot of cash to use for plane tickets and bribes.

I had this happen to me in junior high school. Don't fall for it! They placed a wallet in my gym locker with cash in it, I opened my locker and found the wallet and I quickly removed the cash and threw the wallet in the showers. But, they were all watching me and I got suspended.

Turn it in brother, turn the money in.

it was a kid and the gym teacher in cahoots. The principal's hated me, so suspending me was an easy decision for them.
