Supplemental draft could include Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd
Posted by Evan Silva on March 21, 2011, 7:04 PM EDT

Whether the mid-July supplemental draft will take place as usual is unclear, but if the NFL does go through with it, the top prospect available may be Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd.

Floyd was arrested early Sunday for DUI, giving him two alcohol-related arrests in the past 14 months. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly announced in a Monday statement that Floyd has been suspended indefinitely from the program.

Kelly encouraged Floyd, a team captain, to “get his life in order” as he awaits further potential discipline from Notre Dame’s Office of Resident Life.

If Floyd’s suspension extends into the season or results in his expulsion, he could consider transferring to a lower-level, FCS school or begin training for the possibility that the NFL will hold a supplemental draft.

Floyd, a former five-star recruit, is listed at 6-foot-3 and 227 pounds. In three seasons, he set the Notre Dame all-time record for touchdown catches despite missing nine games due to injury. Floyd considered declaring for the NFL draft after his junior year, but opted to return to school after reportedly receiving a third-round grade from the Draft Advisory Committee.

Draftniks believe the committee’s third-round projection was much too conservative, however. Russ Lande of Sporting News contends that Floyd would’ve been a first-rounder and the third receiver off the board this April, behind only A.J. Green of Georgia and Julio Jones of Alabama.

FFS Floyd.

I'd love to have him but I don't see Pioli bringing him in.

You definitely give a 2nd for him. JFC, that would be a steal.

Give up a 2nd rounder for him, season cancelled and no draft next year would mean you gave up nothing. :)

Chris Henry was serviceable for a couple of seasons and was picked in the 3rd round.

Absolutely worth giving up a 2 for. If we give up a 3, some other team with a worse record than us will do the same and get him first.

Hell, it might happen with a 2nd.

But Floyd would've absolutely been the #3 WR in this draft, IMO. He was foolish to stay in and we'd be foolish not to give up a 2 for him.

This guy is a special, special player. Id give up a 2nd in a heartbeat for him. If he pans out its. A freakin steal. If not, it was worth the try. I think high enough of him as a player that id take him over julio jones. And that says a lot, cause I think julio will become a great player.

Isn't a DUI required to play in the NFL anyways?

Wow, really? I have to admit I don't know a lot about this guy, but I've watched many games that JJ has played in. Damn near all of them, and I believe he will be a phenomenal player. If he is anywhere near the player JJ is, it would be a huge steal for us to land him with our 2nd.

Off to youtube.

Absolutely should be.

But I wonder if he will be eventually.

Didn't Andre Reed get further in the process in the most recent HoF consideration?

That is a joke.

that is a joke. I was never really scared of andre reed. andre reed was a product of the k-gun, not a force all his own. cris carter, on the other hand, ALWAYS had to be accounted for regardless of the offense he was in.

andre reed and rod smith are essentially the same player to me. small school guys who were productive because of who they were with and who was throwing them the ball moreso than their own talent. it may be unfair, but it's what I see.
