PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik is in serious condition in a hospital near his Pennsylvania home.

According to reports, he was admitted after experiencing shortness of breath.

A nursing supervisor at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem would not provide additional information on the condition of the 85-year-old former star.

Bednarik's son-in-law, however, told the Philadelphia Daily News that his father-in-law is as "feisty as ever" and talking with family members. Ken Safarowic tried to quell rumors that Bednarik had a heart attack and told the newspaper: "Really, he was just tired."

Nicknamed "Concrete Charlie," Bednarik played linebacker and center for the Eagles long after the heyday of two-way players. His game-saving tackle helped the Eagles capture the 1960 NFL championship, the last title won by the franchise. He played 58 minutes in that game.

The eight-time Pro Bowler missed just three games in 14 seasons. His No. 60 is one of seven retired numbers in Eagles history. In 1969, he was named the NFL's all-time center.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967. The college football award for the nation's top defensive player is named for him.
