We recently interviewed Shaun Smith as the first 3DMESPORTS Player Spotlight. Shaun is a 7th year pro who currently plays for the Kansas City Chiefs. Shaun began playing football at the age of 7 because two of his cousins had been playing. He grew up rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. Some of his favorite players growing up were James Hasty, Al Toon, and Lawrence Taylor.
Shaun played his first two years of High School football in Brooklyn, NY, after which he transferred to Wichita Heights High School located in Wichita, Kansas. He began his college career playing for Butler (KS) Community College, where he set the team’s single season record in sacks with 20 in 2000. As the #2 ranked defensive lineman coming out of community college, Shaun cited Lou Holtz’s ability to motivate and the SEC being the best conference in college football as some of his reasons for choosing to play for the University of South Carolina.
Shaun was also known for being a pretty good basketball player in his own right, noting he had offers from numerous schools to play collegiate basketball at the D1-AA, D-2, and junior college levels (I think he made the right choice). He entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2003, and spent time on their practice squad that year. Shaun has played in 79 games (37 starts) with the New Orleans Saints (2004), Cincinnati Bengals (2004-2006, 2009), Cleveland Browns (2007-2008), and most recently the Kansas City Chiefs (2010).
In week 12 of the 2010 season, Shaun scored his first rushing touchdown as a pro against the Seattle Seahawks, making him become only the second player in NFL history to score a rushing touchdown and record a sack in a single game! The other being William “The Refrigerator” Perry. He said he was excited to score his first rushing touchdown since high school, as was his daughter who suggested that he should do the “Dougie” as his end zone dance the next time he scores.
Shaun was re-united with Romeo Crennel in Kansas City this past season, after playing 2 seasons under Crennel in Cleveland. Shaun described Romeo as a player’s coach, and a father figure who you can talk to about anything (football related or not). Shaun is currently a free agent, but would love to return to Kansas City and continue building on the successful season the Chiefs had in 2010. He understands the difficulty of repeating what the Chiefs accomplished with the AFC West getting stronger, but would love the opportunity to face that challenge.
Recently this offseason Kansas City Chief’s fans started a petition to keep Shaun with the Chiefs; his popularity has grown with the area fans all year long. The petition can be viewed and/or signed at http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/shaunsmith90 With the upcoming labor uncertainty facing the NFL Shaun would like to see equality for both the players and the owners. He is well aware it’s going to be a tough negotiation process for both the Player’s Union and the owners but is hopeful it gets done quickly so he can get back to the game he loves.
Shaun is heavily involved in charitable contributions such as his Shaun Smith 91 Ways Foundation, which promotes education. He also runs 2 turkey drives around Thanksgiving, one in his hometown Brooklyn NY, and the other in the city he happens to be playing in, where he gives out 91 turkeys in each of those two cities. He also enjoys doing toy drives at Christmas.
Shaun was a pleasure to interview for this Player Spotlight. He was easy to talk to and treated me as if I was one of his good friends. I hope you all enjoy this article as much I had doing it on such a great guy. If you would like to say hi to Shaun, feel free to follow him on Twitter, his Twitter ID is: @autumnsjs90 and he enjoys socializing with his fans as he is one the most popular players on Twitter from the Kansas City Chiefs. – Mike Brasill – 3DMESPORTS

Yep, maybe the worst interview of all time. Nonetheless, i'm very happy to have the guy here. Every team needs a big, loud, mean dog like him to rile up all of the other dogs in the neighborhood.

Ya dont want too many, but every good team has a few Shaun Smiffs.

We better re-sign this guy. He is probably the biggest reason our run defense improved so much last year and he actually WANTS to be here.

I hope the Chiefs bring him back. He can play NT or DE and maybe, just maybe, keeps Scott from drafting DE with the 1st or 2nd pick. We have too many other positions of need, so it would be nice to keep him.
