View Full Version : Food and Drink Dessert Warfare: The Nomination Thread

Rain Man
04-10-2011, 06:28 PM
The next big offseason tournament will be Dessert Warfare, an epic battle of desserts with the winner holding control of the Qattara Depression and Tobruk, topped with whipped cream.

It'll be a tournament to determine the best after-dinner treat. You can define "after-dinner treat" any way you wish, as long as it fits within the Merriam-Webster definition of "a usually sweet course or dish (as of pastry or ice cream) usually served at the end of a meal".

This thread will be for nominations, and you may nominate any dessert you wish. However, you must be specific. You cannot nominate something like "cake" or "pie". You must define a specific flavor or style, e.g., "celery cake" or "pickle pie".

Once I see how many nominees we have, I'll figure out the structure of the tournament. I'm kind of leaning toward head to head as opposed to heats on this one, and having the choices be "right now, what would you order" as opposed to "what would you usually order". We'll see once we've got the nominees.

As always, your participation in this important research effort is appreciated.

And I will begin by nominating key lime pie and lemon meringue pie. Mmmmm.

Do it for these guys.

Pie is awesome, but a bad crust can ruin a pie.

I'm just now realizing how deep my love for "wrappers" really goes. I'd never thought about pie crusts before. But sandwich bread, pizza crust, hamburger buns... these things are the foundation of their respective foods, and if you don't give enough respect to them, they can ruin a dish.

I'll agree to disagree then. Those things can be WAY more than just a delivery device. I've said before you can have the best meats, cheeses and condiments in the world, but crappy bread will take the whole dish down. On the other hand, a really great bread or crust can elevate less than stellar sandwich fixings.

I'm officially backing Candy Bacon in this. It's a rook, but with a little awareness he can go a long way.

Ingredients

1 pound of bacon
light brown sugar
One ziplock plastic bag
How to make it

Cut the bacon into strips approximately 1″ wide.
Fill the ziplock bag with brown sugar and throw the bacon pieces inside. Do not throw more than 3 or 4 pieces at a time.
Shake bacon pieces inside bag so that the piece is coated with brown sugar.
Line the pan with these sugar coated pieces of porkly goodness.
Put the pan in a pre-heated oven set to 350 degrees. Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until they pieces are crispy.
Let cool until hard. Then enjoy the best man snack in the world

Try some. You'll love it.

No need to "agree to disagree". I'm just bullshitting here, throwing my opinion out there. I don't expect anyone to agree with me or to feel like I'm putting them down.

Also, keep in mind, I have Celiac disease, so I don't eat wheat. Since wheat was making me sick most of my life before I gave it up, I think I probably didn't develop a taste for bready stuff, much like never developing a taste for beer because it made me sick. Maybe because of that, I much prefer the pie filling, the frosting on a cake, the pizza toppings, the burger, etc.

That sounds good. Sometimes I make a sort of French Toast bake. I cube some French bread, put it in a baking dish, pour an egg and milk wash over it and some cream cheese mixed in. Refrigerate it overnight and then bake it in the morning. Then I put blueberries in a saucepot with some sugar and cornstarch, make a syrup out of it and pour it over the French Toast.

Caramel Cheesecake (yes it exists, go to the Cheesecake Factory and order it for dessert. They call it something else, but its caramel cheesecake)

Also cherry pie. But not just any cherry pie, I'm talking about that sweet-looking cherry pie with the cross-hatched weaved top crust showing all those red squares of cherry goodness. And a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Not sure how rain man will summarize all of that in a poll option, but he's the poll expert, not me.

Oh yeah, also apple pie. Same cross-hatched crust. And the vanilla ice cream scoop on the side, cant forget that.

No matter what happens, this contest must be won by a cheesecake or a pie. Ordinary "cakes" are sub-standard bready frostinged inferior desserts, blech. I'll eat one piece at someone's birthday in a pinch, but they aren't all that great. They are popular only because you can write stupid crap on them in frosting and they can easily hold a set of candles, but cheesecakes and pies are better for eating.
