I'm a big Habs fan and would like to see them win it all but I'm predicting Philly vs SJ in the finals with the Flyers winning it in 6.

My dad's from Montreal, so I've always had the Habs as my second-favorite team when the Flames get knocked out, but I just don't see them getting past Boston. There's such a size mismatch there; the Habs have no answer for Lucic or Chara, and as great a year as Price had, I don't see him being able to overcome the weaknesses his team has in this matchup.

The East is still retardedly wide-open;

Boston is as big, mean, and skilled as they come. And they have two world class goalies. They're set up nicely.

Philly is in the same boat, though I'd say they're a little more skilled through the forward ranks, and their defense is just a little bit better. Pronger goes straight into Beast-mode come playoff time, and anyone who bets against him in the playoffs has bigger balls than I. The goaltending is the only area, once again, where things fall down for them. The tandem is decent, but is it enough? We'll see.

Pittsburgh: Sidney Crosby is going to play. He missed half the year, and the team had 100 points. They knew they were gonna be fine and make the playoffs without him, there was no point in rushing him back. It's interesting to note that despite missing half the season, Crosby is still top 20 in league scoring, or was with 10 games to go. Lots of people still there from the Cup teams; the defense is lights out, Fleury is as clutch as they come in the playoffs, and when Crosby does step onto the ice, he's gonna have James Neal and Alex Kovalev riding shotgun with him, the best set of wingers he's played with in his career outside of Hossa.

Tampa is only going to go as far as Dwayne Roloson can carry them, but his defense should help him out. Hedman had a massive growth year, and the addition of Eric Brewer was a solid one at the deadline. And they've got a ridiculous offense; Stamkos, St-Louis, Lecavalier, Ryan Malone is finally healthy, and Steve Downie is the kind of player the playoffs were meant for. They shouldn't be underestimated.

Washington is going to choke. Let's not talk about them.

New York is going to upset Washington and then get lit up in the second round by ACTUAL winning teams.

Buffalo will get demolished. No Derek Roy, no chance.

If the Canucks get through Chicago, I'd be very wary of them; in a long series, they'll beat the Sharks up, and they can out-skill them. They've also got better goaltending; a rested Luongo cannot be undervalued.

Anaheim's the dark horse in the West; really deep team top-to-bottom, a core group of guys that have been there before and won it all, and three starting-quality goaltenders. If Hiller gets over his vertigo, look out.

Detroit looks like they're on the downswing; won the division, but finished third? There are definite question marks. I see them getting by the Coyotes, but not much after that.

Phoenix? Fuck off. There was also a report leaked today that the team is moving to Winnipeg after they're eliminated. Hope they get swept.

Nashville hasn't won more than two games in a playoff series in its history. It still has no top-line talent to speak of, and if your best forward is Sergei Kostitsyn, you've got about as much a chance of winning the Stanley Cup as I do of cumming inside Olivia Wilde tonight.

LA could be interesting as well, but losing Kopitar and Williams long-term is devastating. Drew Doughty and that defense are still beastly, but this likely just isn't their year.

Nice write up.

Pronger may actually have to sit tomorrows game and possibly Saturdays from what I'm reading. If they can stay up 2-0 without him they should breeze through Buffalo come Monday.

I really want to see Philly vs. Pitt. After spending four years at U Pitt surrounded by Penguins (and Steelers) Fans there's not too many things that bring a smile to my face quicker than seeing Crosby and his prancing ponies get drilled into the ground by one of the Broad Street Bullies finest.

Hopefully Crosby's cheesy mustache lands somewhere up in 17th row. :thumb:

Phoenix and Chicago are on the ropes; I don't see either team coming back from those deficits. Boston came up huge tonight, must-win game for them. Thomas was a beast, and getting chara back was huge for them. Still think Montreal takes game 4, and the series, which surprises the hell outta me, I thought Boston was gonna run the Habs out of the rink in this series.

Wednesday is probably the last night for hockey in Phoenix. Bryzgalov has all but quit on this team; he either wants to torpedo his value this off-season or he REALLY doesn't want to go to Winnipeg.

I turned this ****ing game on after it was 5-5 after 2 and there's less than 5 left in the 3rd and not a damn goal scored. WTF?

The first period was an abortion for the Sharks, and they replaced their goalie after it was 4-0. The 2nd period was an abortion for the Kings, as they're the 6th best team in the league in goals against and gave up 5 goals on 18 shots. So, I'm not that surprised they both got back to defense in the 3rd, granted the 3rd period shots were 3-2 after the first 15 minutes (it picked up towards the end though).

Seven goals in one period is pretty wild, but it's like watching arena football. I think it'll open up in OT... I predict someone will score in the first 5 minutes, and I'm hoping it's the Kings.

Crazy game in LA.... 5-5 after 2 periods. It was 4-0 Kings one minute into the 2nd.

I couldn't believe this when I saw the highlights last night. Turned it off in the 2nd when it was 4-0, did an assignment for class and tried to go to sleep. Had trouble falling asleep & turned the TV on, saw that it went into OT. I was pissed.

The_Doctor10
04-20-2011, 11:04 AM
I have no idea how San Jose, the team of gutless wonders that it is, managed to come back like that... This is bad for LA, if they'd closed it out at 4-0 or 4-1, then Quick still has an aura of invincibility about him. But now he's no longer in the Sharks heads.

Vancouver will be fine; let-down effort after owning the Hawks the first three games. And you had to expect the defending champs would want to go out with a bang and not a whimper. Once they get home, this is a done deal.

Yeah I'm not turning this one off until the clock reads 0:00. But it's safe to say the Hawks got in Luongo's head pretty early. Still think they dug themselves to big of a hole to begin the series to get out now, but I'm hoping they at least keep playing well & make it interesting.

Finally, the Kings hold a lead. Montreal has lost three straight, and needs the Bell Centre crowd to be behind them next time. Price has looked dynamite. Offense got unlucky; two game-saving stops by people not named Thomas kept this in Boston's court.

Btw Bobby Ryan's goal last night was absolutely filthy.

The Flyers last year had one of the most bizarre goaltending situations I've ever seen... They started with Emery as their number 1 but he got hurt and developed avascular necrosis; Leighton played well in relief, enough so that they didn't go out and get another goalie at the deadline... Then he promptly got hurt almost immediately after they couldn't get anyone else... And then Brian Boucher resurrected his career and got most of the way through the Bruins series before HE got injured and Leighton came back in.

It was an absolute clusterfuck of mediocrity between the pipes, but if Ray Emery is healthy all year, the Flyers beat Chicago. I'm almost certain of that.

Should I root for the Captain(Pronger) or my boi(Boyes)?

I never quite understood something... Why did St Louis feel the need to trade Pronger? They've been paying for it ever since, surely there would've been a way to keep him and jettison some other useless weight (especially considering they only saved 2.5M with whatever Brewer was making).

Because Laurie didn't give a shit about the Blues. All he cared about was how much money he made and owning a NBA team.

Pronger isn't traded if Checketts buys the team after the lockout ends.

Laurie stripped down the Blues so the team would look more appealing to a potential owner.

My favorite was '02-03, when the Avalanche beat the Blues on the last game of the season to take the division and #3 seed away from the Canucks, who only needed 1 point from the Kings, but got shutout 2-0 (and the Canucks only needed like 2 points in their last 3 or 4 games, but only got 1). The Avalanche lost to the Wild in the playoffs that year though, so that sucked.

Luongo will always be known in Canada for leading the Canadian team to victory last year in Vancouver. But he's also always going to be known as a bit of a consistent underachiever if he can't ever get over the hump in the NHL playoffs.

If I'm Alain Vigneault, though, I'm still starting him in game 7. Have to trust in your best.

AV doesn't have a choice; Schneider was injured, and based on the way he left, he won't be healed in time for Tuesday. But based on the way he played (especially on that pk in the third) I think Vancouver would have won tonight. Starting him was the right move.

Luongo will forever be remembered in Canada as the guy who very nearly choked away a gold medal on home soil while playing on arguably the most talented team ever assembled. He should never advance past round 1.

Sooner than that. The league doesn't want this debacle dragging out any longer than it has to.

Hulsizer was at the meeting between GWI and the city of Glendale, and he left after 30 minutes to catch a plane after threatening to buy the team and move it to kansas city. Now, I may be in the minority here, but it seems to me that if you have a $170 million business transaction hanging in the balance, you stay for the whole meeting. You don't cheap out and not rebook a $259 flight to Chicago. He doesn't care, he's not going to buy the team.

Winnipeg will know hopefully by the end of round 1; maybe round two, just so the news can be leaked in between series and not detract from any of the games.

Fair point. Crosby didn't let in two soft goals though, including one with 20 seconds left. Nr did he make two defensive mistakes that would have marked him for life if they lost.

Point is, luongo has all the talent in the world. But it still remains to be seen if he's mentally tough enough. He has no excuses this year; he's not the captain, he didn't play 70+ games (nearly 80 when you factor pre-season and Olympics), there's no Byfuglien in his kitchen. So what's his excuse for games 4 and 5?

My memory of the evolution of goaltending since my days in the 80's makes watching these games seem foreign compared to what I played. Back then, butterfly was unusual, and goalies hitting the ice all the time were derided as floppers. The way to beat the normal goalie was low to the blocker side.

Today, the floppers seem to make up the vast majority of goalies, and the way to beat them is to get them down on the ice and then go top shelf.

After watching them choke like a cheap whore on Long Dong Silver last year, it was nice to see the Bruins come back and finish the job in the first round this time (especially against the pussy Canadiens... they take more dives than soccer players). I'd like to see the Bruins win the Cup because it's been a damn long time (40 years). I remember watching them as a kid, and they're the only Boston team I haven't gotten to see win a title.

Shea Weber has become a Chuck Norris-like figure these playoffs; there is now a site devoted to his deification.

Doesn't bode well for Vancouver.

I know their strategy of drafting the best player available has yielded some absolutely killer defensemen, but nashville is really going to struggle to take things to the next level without some elite top-tier offensive talent. Their best forward is who? Legwand? Hornqvist? Fisher? The other Kostytsin? There's nothing wrong with those players, but when they're your best forwards, things are going to be very difficult over the long haul.

Amazing goalie and defense, and I hope they go far, as I like a lot of those guys, but the lack of offense is gonna haunt them.

You are right, that is the problem, none of those guys are high octane type scorers, they had one in Radulov but that bastard went to the KHL in Russia. I cringe every time they draft another Dman.

The Flyers remind me of the old "heart attack kids" Yankees team in the early 00's. The never start out strong and make things easy on themselves.

They always start off slow and need to pressure to live up to full potential. This hop scotch game of goalies isn't going to work out well if it keeps up either.

Rinne won the conn smythe in game 2 of the second round with those two saves; those were vintage dominik hasek in his prime saves, and absolutely clutch. If they do get to the finals, it's only because rinne is the best goalie on the planet.

Watched the Preds/Canucks this morning... refreshing to see that level of goaltending after seeing the final of Philly/Boston. Amazing goaltending, and as much as I enjoy pointing and laughing at the Canucks, I'm glad Luongo has come back strong (well, mostly).

Tim Thomas just bent the Flyers over and made them his bitch. Totally stole the game. Now Philly--who everyone said would blow the Bruins away in this series--has to travel to Boston down 0-2. The experts all said the Flyers had the edge in every category, except for goaltending... which, as we're seeing, is a kind of important category when it comes to hockey.
