You could basically do the same thing all the way up until 2008. Most of the Carl/Dick/Herm drafts only gave us a couple of long-term productive picks, and maybe half of the players who are productive aren't being productive here.

It was a bad draft before it started. That was the year that the Chiefs didn't get to draft until the 3rd round.

I'm pretty sure we couldn't do a 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008 "10 years later" thread yet. But I'm a journalist, not a mathematician.

For every good player Carl drafted, there were a dozen shit players picked.

Fuck you, Carl.

Now, now, now, we all know a draft is rated the second after it's concluded and it doesn't matter if the player becomes good if he's labeled a "reach" by the gurus.

This draft however, was garbage at the time and makes me vomit looking at it now.

how about a 'what-if' draft of 2001, based on hindsight?

trades that don't happen: trent green for 1st and 2nd round picks

trades that do happen: picks 12, 77 and 141 are traded for picks 26 and 56 (dolphins traded up to 52 to pick chris chambers, and we're undoing that trade)

#26: drew brees (starting QB for a decade)
#42: kris jenkins (starting DT for a decade)
#56: steve smith (starting WR for a decade)
#75: kareem mckenzie (initially backup tackle, then starting RT for over half a decade)
#107: floyd womack (initially backup guard, then spot-starting G)
#108: edgarton hartwell (initially backup MLB, then starting MLB)
#176: tj houshmandzadeh (backup wr initially, then starting WR)
#212: nick harper (backup/starting cornerback)
#243: rob bironas (kicker)

hindsight can be fun.

You need to give that draft more time to develop. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Yeah, IF they were drafted here. Most would of never STILL gotten the chance to start at the time..

I think shaunard harts has a lot of potential if they'd only let the guy play.

truth.

still, I'm going to turn this into my hindsight thread.

onto the 2002 draft:

#8: dwight freeney (starting RDE for next 9 years)
#43: lecharles bentley (starting C until injuries get the best of him, which maybe they don't if we draft him)
#75: brian westbrook (great 1/2 punch along with priest holmes)
#107: david garrard (good backup QB)
#143: scott fujita (keep him this time, plz. starting OLB, assuming we stay in 4-3)
#221 (wtf happened to our sixth round pick?): james harrison (DE, OLB or pass-rush specialist: starter for a decade)

#16: troy polamalu (dammit, larry johnson. polamalu gives us the playmaker that berry will hopefully become)
#47: anquan boldin (starting WR until we trade him for picks, heh)
#78: still traded for willie roaf, starting LT until he retires
#113: asante samuel (starting CB until we let him go or trade for picks)
#153: antonio gates (fuck it, trade tony gonzalez for 2004 2nd and 3rd round picks, gates is starting TE)
#189: cato june: (LB depth)
#230: greg lewis (WR depth)
#252: kasim osgood (WR depth)

None of them ended up in prison. Two are still in the NFL. All tithe regularly & are active in their communities. Winning

Good solid draft pick.

We could have had Drew Brees and Shaun Rogers instead of Trent Green and Dicky Poo.

Hey, Derrick Blaylock wasn't a bad player. Not great by any means, but he was a solid back up IMO.

But I would give this draft a D+

It was a bad draft before it started. That was the year that the Chiefs didn't get to draft until the 3rd round.

Chiefs didn't have a pick until the third round in '93 either.

That one turned out ok.

That one turned out ok.Yes. Turner, Knapp, and Fields really turned this franchise into a SB contender.

On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is no superbowl appearances and 10 is multiple superbowl appearances, I'd have to give that draft a 0.

KC used to specialize in one hit wonder WR's, we're lucky Bowe didnt become the latest in a long line.

I was going to give it a B+ but then I remembered Blaylock had 4 TDs in one game.

So, A-

A story evaluating 6 years later draft -

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/nfl-draft/2011/2005-draft-six-years-later

Footballoutsiders always have some interesting stat evaluations.

In 2005 we drafted Derrick Johnson, Dustin Colquitt Craphonso Thorpe, Boomer Grigsby, Will Svitek, Khari Long, James Killian, and Jeremy Parquet.

Side note on evaluating the drafts of the past. People that are wanting to trade out of the first round so we can pick up a 2nd and 3rd round pick should go back and look at past drafts for 2nd and 3rd round pick.

Some years have been golden like 2008 where we got Flowers and Charles but most years are Alex Magee, Turk McBride, Kris Wilson, Julian Battle, Eddie Freeman, and Marvin Minnis. Point is, if you have a player that you like at 21 do it.
