He goes to my old High School, Hillcrest here in Springfield. I must say the things that he and Coach Beckham have done for that school is incredible. I agree and hope that he stays here in Missouri myself. I went to their state playoff games last year, and plan on going to a couple of games this year.

Yeah, this is a very shaky game. It's not like we're up against OU-type talent and just struggling.. yes, MU-Ohio was a ten win team last year, but they're a completely different team this year. This game, to this point, has been about James Franklin, both good and bad. It's pretty concerning to see him lack the accuracy we've seen from previous QBs. Add that to the stubborn insistence of Dave Yost on passing into a congested area (a strategy that worked well with more accurate QBs), and we could be seeing some major issues surface soon.

Of course. Just try to keep in mind that this was his first game as a starter. It is easy to forget, but Chase and Gabber weren't lights out from day one either. He will improve with every game, and a legit zone option threat will be dangerous once he improves in the passing game.

Our defense is going to carry us this season, as expected.

Yeah very underwhelming performance. Franklin....better improve quickly or we're in trouble. Defense wasn't as dominating as I was hoping even though we only gave up 6 points on a short field. Gave up way too many yards. Although they were on the field for a long time and it was really hot. Still, our secondary looked like the 08-09 secondary giving up 7 or 8 yards to wide open receivers. Run D was great in spurts and then gave up some yards.

I dont know. Kinda disheartening. Friday will tell ALOT.

LO, of course you are flaming, that's your entire existence on this board other than pretending like you have a clue about finance.

The spread was 21, we won by 11. QB had first game jitters and will need to improve. Defense gave up some yards but made stops when it counted, hence 6 points. Getting too high or too low from the first game of the season is what football simpletons do. But understandably you have nothing to look forward to this season other than hoping Mizzou fails, so you have to grasp at straws.

I was not overly impressed Franklin today. Seemed to not put much mustard on many o his passes and seldom got past his first read. To his credit I thought the Oline did not do him any favors today. Seemed to get a lot of pressure from them and was forced to run.

The pass defense looked awful at times but with the guys we lost I suppose I should have expected a dropoff. Hopefully, they will get that worked out.

Overall, just not a very good game from the Tigers. I am glad as hell to get that win but if we play like we did today there will not be many Big 12 wins for us this year. I hope it was first game jitters and they come out and rock ASU next Friday.

Damn - Franklin looked like a skinny Tebow out there.

His release was long, his delivery was low. And unlike Tebow, who could at least throw hard because he was built like a brick shithouse, Franklin couldn't put as much zip on the ball as a lot of HS quarterbacks.

Take the out routes out of the playbook - the kid can't throw them. If you have to put a hump on that pass, it's going to be pick sixed every other game. He'll absolutely murder us with those things if he's allowed to keep throwing them.

I don't know what to do with that performance. The only suggestion to take from it is to run the !@#$ing wishbone because there wasn't a single redeeming quality to take from it from a passing standpoint.

I've honestly never left a win as bummed out as I left that one.

Honestly - if that's the best arm that James Franklin has to offer and it wasn't just nerves, this is a 7 win football team.

He can only throw to about 1/3 of the field with an arm like that. If they want to switch to an option offense - great. But there's no way they can keep the spread with him under center unless it was just a question of confidence.

People are acting like Miami of Ohio is some rummy. That was a 10 win team last year, and 3 of their 4 losses came to Mizzou, Florida, and Cincy. Shit, they won their last 6 games of the season last year.

Not really.

I'm not worried about the final score - I'm worried about the performance of some key individuals.

Kemp struggled to get space again and Egnew was gameplanned against and essentially removed from the game (it will be done again).

But James Franklin looked awful. Not just the results, but how he went about getting them. He had no velocity on the ball, he had no confidence in his reads. Even on the deep slant he threw (I think to Kemp) that put them around the 20 in the 4th quarter, he passed on the big play. The play was coming right toward me so I could see him go to his progressions - he looked right at Washington, who was a 2 steps behind the coverage w/ no help over the top, then just moved off him. It was a 50 yard(ish) TD if he just unloads it but he clearly didn't have the confidence in his arm to throw it out there.

He was bad. There were plays to be made out there and he was just incapable of making them.

He was a horrid passer and his level of horrid will show up against any opponent.

We're 7 point dogs against Arizona State, which I guess is understandable given our less-than-stellar performance last week and MASH unit full of injuries.

However, if we're going to take that ever-illusive step to the next level, IMO it's a must win.

It's a huge game. It could absolutely signal a major step forward in the program.

History tells us that we blow it, but coming into the season I had faith that this was the year.

Franklin's performance last week has changed my mind. Until I see him actually do something on the field, I have to assume we have Jimmy Dougherty under center.

I keep hoping that they just got caught looking ahead last week. I just can't believe that Franklin is as bad as he looked.

Damn, we need this. Especially considering all the conference shenanigans, a non-conference road win against a tough opponent could raise some eyebrows at a crucial time.

But if they fuck it up.....

The one thing that I take some comfort in was that he was so bad that it almost had to be an outlier.

If that's really as hard and as assertively as he can throw a football, he'd have been getting housed every day in practice. In that case, those throws wouldn't have been in the playbook. They wouldn't be throwing those 10 yrd outs if his arm was really that weak. I have to believe he's shown much more snap on his throws in practice for them to even consider, let alone showcase, intermediate out routes like that.

At the same time, there has to be a reason they were avoiding the middle of the field. They weren't running Egnew on those seam routes like they did last season and Moe almost looked like a decoy out there. The WRs just didn't look like they were being utilized outside of those quick outs. With such a drastic shift in the offense from last season (despite only the QB changing), the coaching staff is clearly adjusting to some limitations they've seen in Franklin.

I'm not going to quit on him yet because I have a ton of faith in this coaching staff to recognize talent at the position. That said, I saw absolutely nothing positive to come from last week and I'm going to temper my expectations until I actually see signs of success out there.

Touch is great if you're throwing 15 yard fade routes or over the top of a dropping MLB.

But Yost seems to have a hard-on over 5 yard out routes (damn near crippled us again).

If you're throwing that pass, 'touch' has nothing to do with it. That throw is about timing and velocity. Franklin didn't show enough of it against the Redhawks.

That said, he looked like he had more zip against ASU. I think it's clear he was trying to guide the ball against Miami and it was killing his ability to get the ball there on time. Against ASU he started getting more comfortable and throwing the ball with authority when the situation called for it.

I backed off the ledge bigtime last Friday. Not because of the final score, but because I saw a lot of things from the team that I liked a lot. They need to get the safety situation under control (they were very bad) and they need to get Richardson on the field more (he looked great), but I still think this can be an 8-9 win team.

I didn't see a lack of arm strength. I saw a lack of confidence that led to tentative throws. He overcame that on Friday. Now, he needs to learn when to take a chance and make a throw to a WR that isn't wide open instead of scrambling. I think it will come.

Tristen Holt, a 4-star recruit from 2 years ago, just got thrown off the team after being arrested for leaving the scene of an accident yesterday.

Damn - we don't exactly have a bunch of extremely talented defensive backs lying around. It's pretty surprising that the hammer came down that hard on a kid that is as highly touted a DB recruit as Pinkel's had at Mizzou.

It seems like the best way to make sure a kid is terrible at MU is for him to be a 4-star recruit. Our track record with those guys over the last several years is pretty abysmal.

Jacksonville is one of country's top college football markets

Submitted by Michael DiRocco on September 16, 2011 - 12:07pm Michael DiRocco's Blog

Jacksonville may have an NFL team but it's also one of the nation's top college football markets.

The Media Audit, a Texas-based company that does research studies for the marketing, communications, and media industries, recently released a report detailing the top metro markets among college football fans. Jacksonville came in at No. 8.

According to the study, 69.9 percent of the adults in Jacksonville regularly follow college football on television or radio. Jacksonville was the only city in Florida to finish in the top 10.

The top three markets were Birmingham, Ala. (77.1 percent), Madison, Wisc. (74.1 percent) and Columbus, Ohio (73.5 percent).

The Southeastern Conference leads all leagues with six markets in top 20, including three in the top 10. The Big Ten has five in top 20, including four in the top 10.

The study was conducted in 80 metro markets between January 2010 and March 2011. More than 104,000 people were surveyed.

Here's the Top 10

Birmingham, Ala. (SEC) - 77.1 percent

Madison, Wisc. (Big Ten) - 74.1 percent

Columbus, Ohio (Big Ten) - 73.5 percent

Little Rock, Ark. (SEC) - 71.9 percent

Ann Arbor, Mich. (Big Ten) - 71.5 percent

Toledo, Ohio (Big Ten) - 71.3 percent

Omaha, Neb./Council Bluffs, Iowa (Big 12) - 70.7 percent

Jacksonville (SEC, ACC) - 69.9 percent

Boise, Idaho (Mountain West) - 68.8 percent

Columbia/Jefferson City, Mo. (Big 12) - 68.1 percent

My goal in a sound Madden ass whupin was to score more points than my opponent could put up yards. I managed it once.

Mizzou damn near doubled it.

That was ugly. I can't even take any satisfaction from it - I just feel bad for the poor bastards.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that OU that in seasons where OU has hosted a team that beat them the year before, their average margin of victory is something like 35 points/gm.

I have to say - there would be very little I can think of that would be more satisfying than beating you smug assholes in your own barn, but it seems damn near impossible, especially with our secondary playing like it is.

This could be very ugly.

Have you considered shooting yourself? I think you'd be much happier.

Sure, we're probably going to get killed. But look at the bright side - it will probably be the last time the team will ever have to set foot inside the white trash welfare scum capital of the universe.

Franklin's performance in ASU gave me some hope.

But OU's defense is, for lack of a better word, violent. They're constantly swarming the ball and they're aggressive as hell. To survive that crowd and the energy the defense it will bring, Franklin will have to show poise and confidence well beyond his years and likely we've seen in the program for a kid that young.

And to keep OU off the scoreboard, Landry Jones may have to die in his sleep.

Though to be honest - I don't want to lose OU as a conference rival. I like having them as a measuring stick. They're a program that's clearly ahead of us, but they have no inherit reason they should be. OU fans crow about their historic awesomeness, but they tend to forget that there were some dark years for them as well pre-Stoops. OU can fall, MU can rise, Having them as the rabbit we chase is good to have around, especially when they're a rabbit that I believe we can catch in time.

In the same article where they call OU awesome, they kinda make my point for me:

Negatives: Oklahoma was downright mediocre in the '90s. The Sooners ranked 51st in that decade's rankings, directly behind Hawaii. OU also didn't have a single major bowl win and suffered through three losing seasons. The Oklahoma program also has been punished by the NCAA to varying degrees six separate times in its history.

I recognize that the odds of MU being better than OU for 1/4 of a century or so are pretty remote. That said - a decade is a long time. If OU can have a mediocre decade once, they can do it again. And MU football over the last 10 years has been pretty solid - why couldn't they rise as OU falls?

It's a worthwhile goal and they're a legitimate benchmark for Mizzou. I'll be sorry to see them go.

I find it amusing that you set your sites on overcoming the best team in the modern era of football. Why not say that you could maybe catch Texas, LSU, or somebody like that first?

MU might be better than OU for a short time, but the history the OU fans crow about is also noticed by coaches past, present, and future. It wasn't a coincidence that Stoops waited for a destination job and turned down numerous other offers, but jumped at the OU program during "dark years". Programs like OU, Nebraska, USC, Florida, Texas, Ohio St will be able to attract the best coaches even after a decade of losing. Look at ND, they haven't been good in a very long time, yet they are still getting the top coaches when they fire their old ones.

This defense is looking as nasty as I've seen in many years and Stills and Broyles are the best pair of WR's OU has put on the field, but the secondary always seems to blow a coverage or two a game for big yards. MU is probably taking a small step back over recent years and OU is much improved over last year; factor that in with an OU team fired up over last years loss and the game being in Norman I figure it to get pretty ugly.

Texas has recruiting and monetary advantages that OU does not (nor would MU). LSU has actually had a championship pedigree over the last decade - I'll go ahead and worry about becoming consistently good like OU, then worry about winning championships like LSU.

OU really doesn't have that. Sure, OU can go down into Texas and take some pretty good recruits out of there, but the fact is that UT still gets the pick of the litter for the most part. Florida is the same way.

OU has been able to succeed because they have consistently made great coaching hires, held onto them for a long time, built an identity and stuck to it. (Give me a break with that Stoops shit, he was a DC for 3 seasons and bolted after the 3rd, it's not like he was swatting away coaching jobs every season - he was a very good hire, but he wasn't saving his virginity for the Boomers). There's nothing about Norman fucking Oklahoma that makes it a football mecca. There's nothing in Oklahoma recruiting that makes them uncatchable.

Oklahoma is historic program because they've been successful. Not because of geography, not because of money. They've simply made smart decisions consistently.

That's who Mizzou should model themselves after.

But I recognize that you sooner pricks are too arrogant to even be magnanimous in the face of praise - so feel free to go fuck yourself.

Texas can't seem to catch OU. MU needs to at least win a single effing conference championship. You MU fans act like a co big 12 north championship is something to behold.

Also, don't forget that OU has won 7 of the last 10 Big 12 Championships, not Texas.

Missouri Fans Triumph In SEC Campaign

Published on: October 04, 2011 | Written by: Clay Travis

Missouri fans decided they wanted to join the SEC and they would not accept no for an answer. Over the past three weeks the Tigers have inundated the board of curators, administrators, and other athletic department officials demanding that the Tigers join the SEC. A few minutes ago those fans' voices were heard: Missouri officially announced its board of curators had unanimously given the president of the university authority to explore conference options. Welcome to the SEC, Missouri fans, you've fought for a league bid when your administration wanted to stay in the Big 12 and risk the future.

When the administration was too afraid to act, the Missouri fans stepped up and refused to risk the status quo. What if the Big 12 nears implosion again in a few years -- which it will -- what if Missouri is left standing when this game of conference realignment musical chairs comes to an end? Nope, Missouri fans weren't willing to risk that.

Not hardly.

That's because the college football universe has changed. And it's not all because of conference realignment. If this had been 1992, the last time the SEC expanded, Missouri's administration could have ignored the fan base and the massive percentages of Mizzou fans -- approaching 90% -- who wanted the SEC. But with the rise of social media, the Internet, Twitter, and Facebook, fans have the ability to mobilize like never before. OKTC felt the groundswell of fan support ever since we broke the news a month ago that Missouri had become the SEC's top target for a 14th school.

Missouri fans visited the site in record numbers as we continued to post updates on the Big 12 insanity. Finally, Chuck Neinas, interim Big 12 commissioner gave the SEC an opening. Asked whether the Big 12 would survive without Missouri Neinas replied: "Yes, I think it could be viable because there's a lot of strength in the conference."

If the Big 12 wasn't going to die, then the SEC couldn't be blamed for swooping in and making a second big-time addition in the same month.

Now that Missouri is exploring options, let's consider what we know.

1. SEC commissioner Mike Slive winsthis stage of realignment.

Slive's SEC adds two AAU schools, doubling the SEC's number of members, adds 31 million people to the SEC's existing 50 million population footprint, goes in to two new states with large media markets, and snags two of the Big 12's four most valuable programs -- Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Missouri were the four most valuable remaining Big 12 schools.

Given that Oklahoma came with the price of Oklahoma State, Texas has always been too scared to join the SEC, and West Virginia isn't a good school and has contractual committments in the Big East until 2014, Texas A&M and Missouri are plum additions.

2. The SEC Network in partnership with ESPN is coming.

This is still not getting much attention outside of OKTC, but I'm telling y'all this -- the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri is not just about getting more money out of the existing network deals. This is about more, a coming network partnership between the SEC and ESPN that will be a stand-alone channel modeled after the Big Ten Network.

Read about that network in two columns I did last week.

How quickly could this station launch? In time for the 2012 football season if both sides move rapidly.

3. Missouri will make a decision to join the SEC by December 1, 2011.

That's because as OKTC told you last week -- there is no legitimate fear of a lawsuit and the Big 12 bylaws are so poorly drafted the damages for departing will be limited. You can read why that is here.

Missouri's exit fee should be the exact same as Texas A&M so long as they leave the Big 12 before December 1, 2011.

4. Auburn will swing to the SEC East.

This will be discussed at the SEC athletic director's meeting taking place tomorrow.

The SEC will play with two divisions.

The SEC East will be: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Auburn

The SEC West will be: Texas A&M, Missouri, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State

5. Who will be Missouri and Texas A&M's yearly rivals?

You'll note that with Auburn's move to the SEC East, the Iron Bowl will become the cross division rivalry. Auburn's game against Georgia will be preserved now as a divisional game.

That means Tennessee and Georgia will need new yearly rivalry games. Who will play Texas A&M and who will play Missouri? That will also be discussed at the SEC athletic director's meeting tomorrow.

Here's an early guess for the Vols drawing Texas A&M. Yep, A&M may have dropped one UT for another.

Now, UT fans are already noting this -- the yearly UT-Alabama game would be the biggest casualty of realignment. The game could be preserved for a year or two, but going forward it would require either nine conference games -- a move that the lesser football schools would fight like hell because it might kill their bowl chances -- or an expansion to 16 and a further reevaluation of all schedules.

6. Now comes the prolonged courtship dance between Missouri and the SEC.

It's already started, and it's a bit like how a vice-president is selected as a running mate.

The offer doens't come until you're sure of the answer.

Missouri will now prepare an application for the SEC and the SEC presidents will consider that application.

Expect for it to be accepted.

And expect for Missouri to join the conference at the same time as Texas A&M.

There's only one complexity that can happen now -- what if the Big Ten suddenly awakes from its slumber and gets interested in expansion too? Then the conference realignment hibernation comes to end in an instant. Until then, and I don't think the Big Ten is moving, Missouri fans are going to be working on their suntans.

Put on sunglasses, Mizzou, the future is bright. And lined with sundresses and championships.
