West actually looks OK to me so far tonight. Made a good call on the backdoor two-seamer for the looking K. I'm sure he'll slack off as the game goes, though...
Complete catcher? Meh. I think having a big offensive guy at catcher is one of the more overrated things in baseball. As long as they're not embarrassingly bad at the plate and the defense is solid, I'm good.
It's an offensive advantage, but the guys who actually rake are on the field 20-30 games less than most offensive linchpins. They also tend to wear down offensively as the season goes on. And few guys are truly elite defenders and elite hitters (even in baseball history).

Having watched the Dodgers a lot over the years, I've always said that I would rather have Mike Scocia than Mike Piazza.
Piazza was a liability behind the plate, and was really not much of a clutch hitter.
Soscia was one of teh best defensive catchers I've ever seen, and he called a great game for his pitchers, and while he wasn't a great hitter, he was far more reliable in the clutch than Piaza.

Scioscia was a stud. And exactly the type of catcher I'd love to have playing for my team.
I'd actually like to see the Royals make a run at Yadier Molina when he becomes a free agent (possible after this season, not sure how big the club option is for Molina). If they throw crazy money at Pujols, I think Molina will be let go...
Great defender. Controls the running game. Experienced. Winner.

The bold doesn't really exist, by all statistical measures. Now, I do think that, mentally, some pitchers "have" to have a particular catcher, but pitchers by their very nature are emotionally fragile fucks.
Not arguing your overall point about these two players. Just saying...
For me, give me bats. Catcher is the one position where the defense is actually very overrated. As long as he can throw, ok, everything else will be fine. The vast majority of ML catchers can't block for shit.

Soscia used to study film on batters for hours.
He got to know their tendencies better than the people paid to scout for the team.
He had a plan for each batter in every situation.

I understand your position about the statistical studies, and that's cool. Honestly, I don't know enough about this particular player to make a cogent counter-argument, so I'll concede the point here.

If it exists, it is so small that it is undetectable over random noise. So, I'll take the best bat.
