I didn't see this posted when I did a search....this is an amazing idea. The only problem I have with it is you would have your own power supply because if not, what do the concrete doors run off of when the world ends?

Err, just one question:

How do you get out for food? The only way to roll during zombie apocalypse is an island large enough to grow your own food, but not so large you won't have enough ammo to kill all the zombies that may be on it with you.

What would make the most sense would be to have an underground tunnel that leads to a garage with a secure exit so one could flee if necessary. I would assume some kind of heavy duty or possibly military vehicle would be there.

I also assume there is a root cellar of some type with hopefully enough food to last the inhabitants at least 6 months should the zombie lay siege.

Well, it depends on what type of zombies we're dealing with here.

The traditional zombies which are little more than reanimated husks, lack the motor skills to present much of a problem. With flat slick walls, it's unlikely they'd be able to climb so you could actually have those machine gun nests on the roofed be manned. Just have a roof entrance than can be shut and locked in the off chance you end up overrun and need to retreat to the safety of the barracks.

Even with today's modern super zombies, I still think they're going to have a problem climbing up those walls. I'd recommend keeping a supply of napalm handy (just mix gas with dish soap for a quick homemade version) in the event that they do manage to start climbing. Napalm + match = no more zombies. Not to mention that it would be incredibly handly for removing the pile of corpes after the siege is broken. And since the walls are concrete, you don't have to worry about the house catching fire.

That's like chumming the waters. Yeah, some zombies will go eat them, but others will wander onto your lawn. Plus once the zombie horde eats your neighbors, where do you think they're going to go for desert?

Besides, once they get eaten, they turn into zombies. So now you've got even more zombies on your lawn, PLUS some of them might still remember how you screwed them over and might have a bone to pick with you about it.

No, the best option is still to combine the unmovable object and the unstoppable force.

Firstly:
World War Z poses the idea that guns are, at best, inefficient and at worst, worthless, against zeds.

What you need is a lobo (lobotomizer).

The blade in question is called "Standard Infantry Entrenchment Tool" but was more often referred to as "The Lobotomizer" or more frequently just "The Lobo". There is no picture of this weapon/tool but from description and reading into context within the book we are attempting to create a true to life design. The basic requirements are that it was designed by Marines (in the field the first basic one was handcrafted by them more than likely), it is said that it was massed produced by using only the recycled steel from cars that were no longer needed (as no one was allowed to own a car anymore they were ALL recycled), it is described most in detail as "a fusion of double bladed battle axe and a shovel with a straight steel rod as a handle."

Well, what I was thinking was to make actual razor wire. As in, the entire thing is one long big ass razor.

Then we use that to funnel the zombies into what we will refer to as the "kill zone." On the other side of the wire we need some big ass spinning blades like the first trap in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade except bigger, and sharper.

Yeah I have thought about buying one of the cheap warehouses off of front street and doing that..

Have a huge 25foot tall barb wire fence all the way around, reinforced with concrete pillars so you can not drive though it.. Big metal gate, remote activated.. Then you take off most of the roof and convert it to sliding glass to let the light in.. Can close most of it for bad weather or winter time.. In-ground pool also in there..

Build the two story house inside of the warehouse, paint the interior walls of the warehouse with some theme.. Can park you vehicles in side the warehouse.. Have a astroturf lawn on the inside..

Would be sweet and probably somewhat cheap to do..

Put a miniature wind turbine on top of the warehouse to power the complex.. I guess you could also acquire more land around it for gardening..

Honestly, spear and shield.. If you are in a secure area where the zombies are busting through fence just spear them in the head, rinse and repeat.. Same if you are up high with a blocked off entrance..

Second, zombies are flammable.. Set them bitches on fire, they will keep igniting each other, like during dawn of the dead on top of the mall.. If all of them were below me I would set off molotovs on them..

Third, wait till winter if you are not in florida and them fuckers will freeze solid, then just go at them with a baseball bat..

What keeps the zombies from walking across the ocean/lake floor to the island?

Excellent point. Damn you zombies!

Wait. On further examination of expert testimony (http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/thread/2247299/Can+Zombies+Swim%3F?offset=40) it would seem the *type* of zombie will matter. It's generally accepted that zombies lack the coordination to swim. If they're viral or genetic zombies they won't be able to survive the underwater walk. If they're the plain old undead type you're screwed.

You could put sharks or alligators in the moat.

But then you might end up with zombie sharks or alligators. And that you DO NOT WANT

I think "Barb Wire" would be a great name for a porn queen.

Good point, I hadn't considered the different varieties. When I was a kid, there were only the undead kind. Times (and zombies) change.

Zombie sharks? Do they have zombie lasers on their frickin' zombie heads?

That was assumed, yes.

I've got that and World War Z by the same author (the son of Mel Brooks) on my Kindle, but haven't gotten around to reading them yet.

If you do I'd like to know if you enjoy them.

I'll let you know, I've got a couple of trips coming up and plan on enjoying them. A friend whom I trust says they are the funniest thing he's read in years. If the acorn didn't fall far from the tree, they might not be Blazing Saddles, but I expect it might be To Be Or Not To Be.

I've read it and World War Z.

I'm currently reading Dust, which is a novel told from the zombie's point of view.

Eh. It's currently a little Twilight and teen angst for my tastes (it's a young adult book which I have to read a lot of due to my job). I'm only 40 or so pages in at the moment. It doesn't skimp on the gore and guts, though.

I'll just say that it's amusing me at the moment.

One of my students is a zombie novel maniac. He's always raving about some guy who you can read all of his stuff online, and he's really into indy and underground zombie lit. I'll ask him for some recommendations if you all are actually interested in zombie lit.

I'm not really a zombie guy. I suppose I'm more likely to take the best few from lots of different silos instead of going deep into a specific genre.

Yeah. I'm the same way. World War Z is excellent, FWIW. Like... really good. I haven't really trudged much further than that.

I really like the Passage by Justin Cronin as well. It's vampires, but it feels like zombies, because it has the whole post-apoc thing (which along with dystopian lit is probably my thing more than anything else) and the vampires don't really fit into the traditional vampire mode.

Cool. World War Z is on Youtube. Guess I know what i'll be listening to in the car over the next couple of weeks.
