Sal Paolantonio called it a "virtual certainty" that the Panthers will select Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick.

Dear God this makes me giddy. Denver can pick ANY player they want at #2. There is no way they can make a mistake. I will be happy with anybody named Dareus, Fairley, Miller, or Peterson. :)

I am stoked to find out how Pioli handles the battlefield in this part of the first. Fucking up the McCluster pick last year makes me nervous.

Carimi is a safe pick IMO. If I was Pioli and I was unsure about everybody else at 21, Carimi would be the definite fallback option especially if I was caught off guard by not being able to trade up for Jones.

I'd like Aldon Smith to fall. I'd also not be upset with Jonathan Baldwin.

it would be a uncharacteristic risk

Studebakers measurables are on par or better than the majority of Smiths and he has had two years under the wing of "their guy" in Vrabel.

I would be very surprised if they go through all that effort and extend his contract only to spend a premium draft pick to take his spot.

I would take him at 21, but I dont think they would.

what does Aldon Smith offer as a prospect that Studebaker doesnt already offer something comparable as?

here were his proday times...

253
6'03.1"
10 1/8 hand
33.5" reach
36.5 vertical jump
10'7" broad jump
10 - 1.59, 1.61
20 - 2.63, 2.65
40 - 4.60, 4.61
20 yd shuttle 4.14
3 cone 6.81
60 shuttle 11.59

I bet that matches up pretty well with Aldon Smith...and Andy has been coached by Crennel and Vrabel to be our future LOLB.

We'll see if Im right in that outlook.

There's a reason Smith is a projected 1st rounder and Studebaker went in the 6th.

Drafting pouncey in the 1st isn't the end of the world. It would be a great pick if he turned out to be a quality center.

It's the end of the world if his snaps end up scattering all over the field like they were fired from a blunderbuss, though.

And considering the Steelers want him really bad maybe it's just posturing to try and move back.

Character an issue for the Chiefs
http://www.saljournal.com/sports/story/high-character-chiefs

4/28/2011
By DOUG TUCKER The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- If there is an NFL record for acquiring the most leadership in the shortest time, it probably belongs to Kansas City.

A year ago, six of the seven players Scott Pioli selected in his second draft as Chiefs general manager were college team captains. From safety Eric Berry in round one to linebacker Cameron Sheffield in round five, Pioli focused on athletes whose on-the-field achievements were heavily garnished with loyalty, character and class.

Berry, the Tennessee All-American and overall No. 5 pick, used to stay late after practice helping clean helmets. Third-round guard Jon Asamoah won the Big Ten's Medal of Honor for being both a scholar and an athlete.

Impressed but a bit skeptical, many fans wondered if Pioli had gone a bit overboard. Sure, character's key if you're collecting Boy Scout merit badges or helping old ladies cross the street.

But could these choir boys play?

In three words -- oh, my, yes. Except for Sheffield, who had a season-ending injury in August, every one of Pioli's reputable rookies played a significant role in a franchise-record six-game improvement that included an AFC West title.

Pioli is certain that was not coincidence. He may value player character as much as any GM in the NFL.

Most observers agree the Chiefs, with the 21st overall pick Thursday night, will probably be looking at wide receivers, offensive linemen and linebackers. A nose tackle is also on their wish list.

And so is character.

"Whether it's a physical capability or trait or their makeup, (there are) players who can be successful in other programs but not be successful here," Pioli said. "That's because when you set up a certain environment in how things are going to be done, when we talk about the culture that's here, there are certain demands on people that players can handle, and other players can't.

"That doesn't mean they're not a good player, and it doesn't mean they're not a good person. It just means the fit isn't right."

While one season is not nearly enough to give any draft class a final grade, the Chiefs may look back on 2010 as one of their finest. Berry was the first Kansas City rookie selected to the Pro Bowl since Derrick Thomas in 1989. Dexter McCluster led rookie punt returners with a 15.5-yard average. Kendrick Lewis tied for third among rookie safeties with three interceptions and Tony Moeaki had 47 catches for 556 yards, No. 2 among rookie tight ends.

Something that surprised coaches was how quickly the group bonded, and they seemed to remain close all season. Off-the-field problems? Not a whiff.

"We really got close in rookie minicamp," Berry said. "We just kind of tried to help each other get through everything. We never really get in any arguments or disagreements. We just keep it real with each other, and keep it moving."

Even defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel was taken aback.

"Usually you have one or two guys who are not exactly crazy about somebody else," he said. "But they all bonded and rallied around each other. We're fortunate we have a good group who like each other. Their bond has only grown stronger."

Being former team captains, Lewis said, gives everybody something in common.

"It brings leadership and character to this team," he said. "All those guys have great leadership and it shows in the locker room. There aren't any guys who are all for themselves. We're all trying to do what's best for the team. And that's what makes this rookie class so special."

Teams putting value on character in nothing new.

"You win with character, not with characters," said NFL analyst and former Bears tackle Tim Ryan. "Obviously, for all those (Kansas City rookies) the character is there. The leadership is there. Those characteristics and assets are big."

Mortensen is tweeting that both sides expect a ruling on the emergency stay to come down this afternoon. If the owners lose, it might spur the owners to allow the player for picks trades after all (pure speculation on my part). I thought allowing them would have been a good idea even based upon Nelson's ruling, because it would have put some more buzz into the draft in cities like Philadelphia.

First in with this -- the Pats will trade the #28 or 33 picks. Or both. Remember, you heard it here first.

Personally, I'd gladly trade the 28 for a 2 this year and 1 next year. In a freaking heartbeat. Not sure that's going to happen given how close to the end of the round it is, but still. Those picks apparently have heightened value because under the current scheme 1st round picks can be signed for one year longer than 2nd and later picks, so if you have a QB that you want to wrap up for a bit longer because he's going to basically redshirt his rookie year.....

How many more times are the going to fuck up going to Eisen for the pre-draft show, only to back out and show commercials?

This shit better not happen tonight.

If we don't draft Phil Taylor, who is going to play NT.....Ron Edwards? Shaun Smith played there some but we need some beef. I do like Akeem Ayers at OLB, another big need. Kenrick Ellis looks good but has a bunch of failed drug tests.

Kenrick Ellis is good. But he's not a "Pioli-right 53" type of guy.

Dont forget you can't trade next years picks.

From what I remember, teams were told they could make trades for future picks at their own risk.

That's absolutely NOT what I've been reading, unless there was a change like TODAY.

You can't trade picks for players, but picks for picks, into 2012 and '13, is fine.
