Fuck it...calling this shit with our balla-ass GM.

Height: 6-0 3/4
Weight: 335
Speed: 5.34
Arm: 33 1/4
Hand: 9 5/8
Wingspan: 78 3/4
Birthdate: 03/15/1987
Hometown: Waynesboro, MS
Grade: 5.10

http://friendsoftheprogram.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/powe.jpg

Notes: Parade All-American and highly sought-after recruit who also played basketball as a Mississippi prep. Following his high school career, became embroiled in a highly publicized eligibility saga. Powe, who is dyslexic and suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), committed to Ole Miss as part of the 2005 recruiting class but failed to qualify and attended Hargrave Military Academy (Va.). Was denied by the NCAA three times in a three-year span, all the while maintaining his commitment to the Rebels despite two coaching changes. At one point, he re-enrolled in high school courses and worked as a jailer. Was granted a partial waiver in 07 that allowed him to attend Ole Miss and receive financial aid but not play football. Had surgery in October 07 to repair a fractured left wrist. After four years off the field, weight ballooned to 387 pounds, but he got down to the 340 range when he finally debuted for the Rebels in 08 as a junior. Saw action in 12 games and recorded eight tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 1 sacks with one interception. Had the wrist operated on again in May 09 before starting 10-of-13 games at nose tackle in the fall, producing 34-12-3 with a forced fumble. Also received two carries for zero yards. Started all 12 games at nose tackle in 10 and recorded 27-8-2 with one batted pass and a forced fumble. Team captain.

Positives: Widebody with sheer mass and girth to anchor. Stout at the point and can handle a double-team. Quick get-off and flashes ability to re-establish the line of scrimmage. Plays with a load in his hands and can push the pocket when his battery is charged. Fairly light on his feet and quick in short areas for a big man. Strong tackler. Loves football and brings energy to a defensive line.

Negatives: Lacks ideal height. Inconsistent. Limited foot speed and range to close down the line or operate outside a phone booth. Needs to improve his coordination and play with better base and knee bend. Plays top-heavy. Can do a better job protecting his legs. Struggles to feel pressure. Limited pass-rush value. Tires quickly. Weight has fluctuated and has a big, soft midsection that affects his balance, ease of movement and conditioning. Suspect character and football aptitude.

Summary: Has a true NT skill set but will have to allay concerns about an overwhelming number of troublesome traits, including marginal stamina and on-field inconsistency. Academic struggles were scrutinized upon arrival in Oxford and bring concerns about his mental capacity to digest and execute an NFL playbook. At his best is a big-bellied, powerful, two-down run stuffer but flashes too infrequently and will require a patient coaching staff, veteran mentorship and a structured team environment to have a chance for success.

NFL projection: Sixth- to seventh-round pick.

Just read a couple articles, apparently before he was drafted, Powe was telling Ole Miss well-wishers that the Chiefs were a lot more interested in him than any other NFL team, after the bowl game the chiefs were calling him every other day, and they had a private workout.

So, given they picked him its clear that Pioli was interested in Powe all along, but he did a masterful job in reading the market, realizing no one else was hot on Powe and holding off on pulling the trigger too early.

Yeah. I understand he was trying to market his guy, but it basically lets teams know that nobody has really been courting him for an early pick.

Yeah, this guy's clearly not dumb at all. He wants to do construction after he's done playing, but based on that press conference, he could take Shannon Sharpe's job and be about 1,000,000 times better at it.

Just because he can't read doesn't mean he's not smart. The guy's obviously got a brain in his skull; it's just wired to do shit like pour concrete and stuff running backs.

Q: How much contact did you have with the Chiefs before the draft?

POWE: “A had a little contact with them, spoke with coach (Romeo) Crennel and coach (Todd) Haley and those guys, and I had a pretty good amount of contact with them.”

Q: You’ve had some documented weight issues, where are you at right now and where do you feel the best?

POWE: “As far as weight wise, I weighed in at 328 before watching the draft, they asked me to get the weight down, weight is not a problem, I’ve always been able to maintain my weight. I’m just trying to get down to 320, report to camp at 320.”

Q: Have you talked to the Chiefs about that?

POWE: “Not terribly, just asked me to keep my weight down.”

Q: Did you talk to Todd Haley today?

POWE: “Yes sir, just told me that he was very excited and like I said, just to keep the weight down, very excited to have me on board.”

Q: And you had the chance to talk to Dexter McCluster and Kendrick Lewis about the Chiefs and Kansas City?

POWE: “They have nothing but positive things to say about Kansas City, I’ve taken every chance to talk to them about it, had a chance to talk to them after I came back from my visit and I told them I loved it and they only speak highly about the football tradition there, how everybody’s a family so I’m very excited to be a part of the family.”

Q: Looking at some of your draft projections, are you happy with where you got picked?

POWE: “I’m very excited, when I made it into Ole Miss, I applied for a better year at Ole Miss, walking out on faith, I’m just going to put it in God’s hands, I’m very excited, wherever God puts me, I had a chance to have my name call, I’m excited, it’s not how you get there. I’m just very excited, I know where my game’s at and I’m just glad to be a part of the Chiefs family."

Q: Have you watched much of the Chiefs the past couple of years?

POWE: “Yes I have. That’s the best young team I’ve ever seen, take the field and play well, got a lot of young guys, lot of guys from the SEC so that’s one of the reasons why I watched them . They have a pretty good team right there, I think we have the chance to do some things really special.”

Q: As a nose tackle in the ‘3-4’ you want to be a bigger guy. How do you balance staying at a certain weight but being able to keep your endurance up as well?

POWE: “It’s not a problem. Just like me and my trainer always talk about, making it at any weight, trying to come in light. Putting on the weight is not a problem so that won’t be an issue. I just want to report to Kansas City at a solid weight and size and let them decide. Whatever they want me to be at weight-wise I don’t have a problem with that. Like I said I can maintain a weight, whether they want me to gain 10 pounds I can do that or if they want me to drop a couple to stay solid I can do that.”

Q: Do you have an idea of when you’ll be coming to Kansas City?

POWE: “No sir.”

Q: You played in 2010, 2009 and 2008. Was 2005 the year you were at Hargrave Military Academy?

POWE: “I was there the fall of 2005, the spring of 2006.”

Q: So ’06 and ’07 you did not play and I imagine that’s why you were petitioning for more years. What kept you from playing those years?

POWE: “I had a couple of courses that I took.”

Q: That was in both years?

POWE: “Yes sir.”

Q: How big of a deal was that for you to get eligible?

POWE: “It wasn’t a big deal. I had a few stumbling blocks in the road. It wasn’t really a big deal. I always wanted to play football and I wanted to do whatever it took to play football so it wasn’t a big deal. I’m just looking for what’s next.”

Q: Do you feel like you learned a lot coming back from eligibility issues?

POWE: “Can you repeat that?”

Q: Do you feel like it made you a stronger person on and off the field after you dealt with the eligibility issues?

POWE:”I think it made me my own person, helped me calm down a lot, you know, just had to fight adversity. I think I think it prepared me for a lot of the stumbling blocks I’ll run into.”

Ole Miss fan forced into Chiefs fandom. Adding Powe gets it up to five Rebels on the roster. It could be destiny anyway. Never liked John Elway or the Broncos. Archie and Eli said the Chargers were a bunch of losers and I'm certainly not going to argue with them, plus Rivers is a little beach. Raiders, well when drafting Jarmcus Russell with the #1 pick isn't clearly the craziest thing you've done in the last five years, enough said.

As a new Chiefs fan I do have a request though: ahmmm "WE" might as well trade for Eli, P-Willie, Mike Wallace, and Oher and consolidate my viewship down to one team. If "we" could make that happen it would be great. Thanks. Also we (this we being Ole Miss) got a couple tackles coming up so don't forget to draft them.

P.S. By the way Powe (rhymes with go) can most definetly read and is at least as smart as the average NFL defensive lineman, I'm not sure just how good he'll be, but he is damn sure one hell of a steal in the 6th round

Another Pioli bust.

For the most part, the Chiefs are pretty comfortable with their defense when fully healthy, as they believe they have the right mix of young players and veterans, not to mention a lot of talent. However, they do have a major need for a nose tackle. Kelly Gregg manned the position in 2011, but as a free agent at age 35, he is likely to either retire or move on to a different team. We hear that finding his replacement will be a top priority this offseason, either through free agency or the draft. The only other nose tackle on the roster with any experience is Amon Gordon, who had two starts last season, and he is considered to be more of a role player than a starter. Jerrell Powe, a sixth-round draft pick in ’11, was called a "swing and a miss" by a team insider, as Powe never rounded into playing shape and was active for only one game.

There were people here that would've drafted the guy in round 2, so it could've been worse.

I thought he did look a bit overmatched at times. He had a couple occassions where he got penetration... but there were times he also got his rectum completely pushed in and was driven off the ball. Hard to believe for a guy that big.

I wonder who this "insider" is? Sounds like some potentially disgruntled dude who's tired of buying disposable cell phones.

The fact is that Powe is another rook playing a position that takes time to learn and who had no training camp to speak of and no off-season program whatsoever.

Crennel should be able to get him into shape ... assuming Powe has the heart (tell-tale, tho it may be). I would think that, normally, it takes a couple of years for a d-lineman to fully transition to the NFL game.

Powe was disruptive on more than half his snaps he played this year. He paso got pushed around a couple times.

One would have to think that the times he "flashed" showed his potential to be a good player for us. And that the times he got pushed around displayed the fact that he needed a lot more work on technique before being able to anchor against teams in the middle of the playoff hunt late in the year.

As Chiefs fans, one thing we know for certain is that DL take time to develop and Powe is no exception to that rule.

Given his learning disability, maybe he washes out...but I think (like most DL, outside of talented pass rushers) he will develop into a good player with his talent and Romeos coaching. No doubt Romei had to have said he had a chance for him to be drafted, even as late as he did.

We have a sixth round pick barely see the field this year, while guys like Victor Cruz go undrafted and rape the league, and people wonder why we need to call out our GM.

Good GMs find gems late in the draft and UDFA. So far, outside a kicker, Pioli hasn't found ANYONE.

A coach? Groundsman? Vendor? Front office?

If the guy is still inactive next year, I'll buy the factthat he could wash out because he couldn't pick up the mental part of the game, but I don't think that's the case.

Belcher was from 2009. Must have been the work of Piolis one scout that year.

To me the problem was the division sucking as much as it did. As bad as we stunk it up, we weren't really ever out of it until week 15. That being said if we started playing rookies while we were in the race there'd be a whole new calling of the heads. I understand that's my theory and week 17 foiled that theory, but that was due to Romeo job hunting.

I take this as another sign of yet another quality player in KC. The loud mouths were calling for DJ's head and willing to trade him for a low round pick just a few seasons ago. Then it was trade Dorsey while he still had trade value. Let's not forget the public lynching of Hali when we switched to the 3-4. And as recently as this offseason, let's get rid of the best damn receiver we have because he doesn't catch every damn poorly thrown ball that touches his fingertip. Judging from past results, my question would be what year does Powe make the Pro-Bowl?

Bowe catches the poorly thrown balls. It's the well thrown ones he has trouble with. The ones that hit him right in the numbers. There's probably an element of "Holy SHIT the pass is accurate this time!". Then he drops it out of pure shock.

I think the only thing you can say about Powe is that Gregg gone and Gordon an FA, is that he hasn't really shown us enough to believe we don't have to add to that position this year. IMO we should draft NT in the 2nd or perhaps even the first if another option doesn't open. This team does not go after high price FAs.

I'm kind of leaning this way after seeing this guy play, and then reading this...

Josh Chapman had his hands full with a Florida offensive linemen as he pursued John Brantley, the Gators' pocket-passing quarterback.

Alabama's rugged nose guard earned his scholarship by absorbing punishment and double teams. Sometimes it was more like wrestling Gators.

The play in the Swamp on Oct. 1 ended like many others in Chapman's Crimson Tide career with one significant difference: days later during an MRI, he learned he had torn the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee.

"Normally I can deal with pain pretty well, but after three days I needed an MRI," Chapman said. "Dr. (Lyle) Cain said he's never seen a guy that can have a torn ACL and still stay that stable."

Chapman said he made the choice to finish the season, and to put off surgery. More than three months after the injury, he underwent the procedure Tuesday and is rehabilitating at Alabama.

A recovery timetable is unclear, Chapman said, though he suggested it will take months.

Surgery forced Chapman to withdraw from the Senior Bowl.

Chapman said he received an invitation to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine next month, where he intends to compete in the bench press and to interview with NFL teams.

Why did he finish out his senior season instead of opting for surgery?

"I didn't really want to give up like that," said the former Hoover High star. "I enjoyed playing. As long as it stayed right, I could play."

Chapman played 12 games this season, sitting out Alabama's 45-21 win over Georgia Southern on Nov. 19.

The Tide quickly learned that day what Chapman's absence truly meant. Alabama allowed 302 yards rushing against Georgia Southern's precision option offense.

Chapman, who wore a brace to protect his left knee starting against Vanderbilt, finished the season with 23 tackles, and totaled one sack and two pass breakups.

He said his knee worsened throughout the season, and that he underwent treatment intended to help cartilage grow.

Surgery was inevitable.

"I finally got it fixed," Chapman said Wednesday. "Now I have to rehab. ... I'm gonna try to get back as fast as I can, but the right way."

Chapman has plenty of experience playing through significant pain.

As a junior, he said he tore his labrum, and finished the season before having surgery to repair the problem after spring practices concluded last April. The injury occurred during a 24-21 loss at LSU on Nov. 6, 2010.

Chapman said he's getting his strength back where it used to be, and is looking forward to the combine's bench press competition where he is eyeing the record.

"These past two years have been the first time I've had anything really injured," Chapman said. "It's frustrating, but I love football. Injuries are gonna come with the sport. It's how people deal with pain."

Chapman said he is inspired by Baltimore Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis. He said he once heard the former University of Miami star talk about mentally overcoming pain.

Now with the possibility of breaking into the NFL, Chapman was asked if his management of pain the past two seasons is a selling point to scouts?

"It's just part of my position," Chapman said. "One thing you have to do is learn how to fight through a lot of things. I learned it's not just about playing through injuries, but different circumstances on the field."

That was always my take on Albert. He regressed with less weight to anchor with, but who knows how it will effect him in coming years. It will be interesting to watch the weights of some of these guys and how it relates to their play on the field.

Not sure it really applies to anyone else, though.

I'm not a big believer in making lineman on either side of the ball lose weight.

Gotta get them into shape but not lose weight imo.

Too much about their job is about leverage and extra weight helps that.

I'm hoping it was Haley who held him back and that we have a beast in the wake. Now I don't know what to expect from him & so far he reminds me of "Tank" Tyler that had the body but didn't have drive to make the cut.

Didn't Tank Tyler have sleep apnea?

We can really bolster our D-line if Powe steps up this year and we can definitly use him on short yard & goal line situations.

The two players I wanted to see most play were Powe and Stanzi but they just didn't get the nod. Total waist of a season & I would be more happy if we had a better shot in the draft for a top flight QB. Yet we just had to be mediocre enough to **** that up. ****

Yes he did. I liked Tank's potential since he just looked the part and like you said had the body for the position. His draft reviews also talked about some talent that I was hoping we would develop into an excellent DT.

BTW, if there was ever a player whose name sounded like a DT superstar it was Tank Tyler. :D
