I am planning to read A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present.
Has anyone read this and what are your thoughts on Howard Zinn?

I haven't read him but I have read about him and parts of his material. He's considered VERY left-wing by the right. Although many libertarians, like Lew Rockwell, think he's spot on.

From what I have read about him it appears he is very left in his thinking. I think it will make for an interesting read~

Yeah, he's a pretty liberal dude.

I've read A People's History. What an accomplishment, seriously. It is one of the best pieces of work I've read. Not necessarily because I agree with everything, but a comprehensive one-volume history of America from ANYBODY'S point of view, written this well, is damn near impossible. But Zinn did it.

I've had issues with Zinn's work before, particularly the fact that he's very good at pinpointing problems but rarely if ever offers solutions. But his perspective is crucial to understanding the entire American political landscape, I believe.

I have to admit I have wanted to read it or at least take a look at it. I won't pay for it though. I could check at the library though.

The last revision came out in 2005 so I am sure it is available in paperback relatively cheap. I plan on checking next time we head to the big city~

Oh I am sure if he is as leftwing as I hear I will disagree with him on many things. I am reading it out of curiosity~

He's not a historian, in the academic sense. He's a dissident and contrarian, though maybe not as bitter as other notables, like Noam Chomsky. But he has that same strain.

I'm not a fan of that kind of writing or perspective. It's not something that I would go out of my way to read. It's just not the best historical understanding.

I read it. A good commie friend gave it to me. Threw it away when I finished. I haven't done that with many books. I usually pass them on to someone else.

Yeah, Chomsky's views on foreign policy are almost exactly opposite of mine. I'm a huge supporter of US foreign policy during the Cold War.

Interesting, given that he's a self-described socialist.

I haven't read it, but it seems like it would be worthy of reading it just to see history through a different lens.

I guess I should be ashamed to admit that I've never read that book. I applaud your willingness to examine different viewpoints, though. Pretty cool. I might just pick the book up as well. I've been hankering for some non fiction.

Damn. Now I wish I'd kept the thing so I could give it to you. At least his idiotic ideas would be safe in your hands, and he wouldn't sell the extra book.

If I got it from you, I might read it, but I don't plan on buying it (or even borrowing it from a library) any time soon.

It is on my list of the 10 best books...

course, he was kinda preaching to the choir in my case.

Was this a conclusion you have come to by reading him? As I have said I doubt I will agree with his views but I will have to do some reading before I state an opinion about him~
