Why Do Americans Continue to Give Obama a Pass?

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2011/06/06/why-do-americans-continue-to-give-obama-pass/#ixzz1OX8jNbkC

Why do Americans continue to give President Obama a free pass? Despite pitiful job creation, a lurching and disappointing recovery, recurring confrontations with Israel, paralysis on immigration, despair over Afghanistan, a worsening fiscal outlook, an expensive stalemate in Libya, a dysfunctional relationship with Congress (including his own party) and a world view that is patently at odds with mainstream Americans – Obama continues to enjoy positive approval ratings. As of last week, according to Gallup, more than half of American voters thinks the president is doing a good job.

By what measure? Because he pushed through a still-unpopular health care initiative that spends money we don’t have and that manifestly did not cure our out-of-control healthcare outlays? Because he speaks well? Because he’s tall?

Why are Americans so anaesthetized? This president spent his first two years in office blaming the prior administration for our rocky economy. Fair enough.

Today, though, the sixteen million Americans unable to find jobs should hold Obama accountable. Those alarmed about our $15 trillion national debt and incensed that our finest young men and women continue to die in Afghanistan should hold Obama accountable. We should all hold the president accountable for the direction the country is heading: downward.

Jobs remain the most pressing matter before the nation. What has the president done for our unemployed? Not much. The Stimulus bill mainly allowed state and local employees to maintain their jobs -- jobs now being lost as the Recovery Act winds down and states confront yawning budget gaps. The great drive to boost exports (and U.S. manufacturing) has been diverted by obeisance to organized labor. Despite all the celebrating, none of the free trade pacts ballyhooed by Mr. Obama has yet been submitted to Congress.

Instead, we’ve had the unbridled activism of Obamaites staffing the National Labor Relations Board, the EPA, the Justice Department, OSHA, the Health and Human Services Department and other relevant agencies. They have not only ramped up regulatory oversight and enforcement but generated waves of new rules that have businesses on edge. The Wells Fargo/Gallup index of small business optimism sank again in April; it has barely recovered from the recession.
In addition, the passage of ObamaCare and Dodd-Frank threw more than 20% of the economy into turmoil. All kinds of companies confront new webs of unwritten and undefined rules. Google “Obama administration rules and regulations” and you get 113,000,000 hits. That can’t be good.

The Obama team is certain that America’s industries were recklessly unfettered under George W. Bush; they are equally convinced that nothing good can come of such forbearance. Playing David to our corporate Goliaths is elixir for community organizers.

What about the nation’s debt crisis? Though President Obama has taken little responsibility for our mounting debt, it has in fact taken place under his watch. Our 2007 deficit was $161 billion or 1.2% of GDP. This year’s budget hole is around $1.5 trillion, equaling 9.8% of GDP. The factors in play, according to a helpful recent analysis by researchers at International Strategy & Investment (ISI), include a recession-driven revenue drop of four points, and spending increase of five percentage points. Most of the revenue drop is considered temporary; by 2015 revenues (mainly tax receipts) will bounce back to around 17.4% of GDP- close to the historic norm.

In other words, as the GOP has been insisting, it is spending that is and will remain out of kilter. The recession caused a jump in outlays totaling 1.3% of GDP, as unemployment compensation and other programs tied to the economy increased. The Stimulus program and other big new expenditures boosted domestic discretionary spending by 0.9% of GDP, while defense is up 0.8% of GDP. Across the board, the major entitlements programs, including Social Security and Medicare, have increased, and will continue to do so.

The reality is that President Obama has jacked up spending across the board. The number of federal employees, which for thirty years held steady at around 1.1 to 1.2 million, has climbed to 1.43 million under Mr. Obama. Moreover, the number earning over $150,000 has doubled. More important, the president has completely whiffed on correcting the future trajectory of government spending. He has failed to put forth any serious long-term debt reduction plan. Instead, he has ridiculed GOP proposals that attempt that necessary step.

On foreign policy, Mr. Obama is riding a wave of joy over the shooting of Usama Bin Laden, which for now has overshadowed the ongoing nuclear program in Iran, the second of his major confrontations with Israel, our muddled mission in Afghanistan and the mess we confront in Libya – an involvement that is certainly not central to our self interest.

At some point Americans will want to know why we are sending our finest young men and women off to die in these hostile places; they will want a better understanding of these seemingly pointless missions. They will ultimately hold Mr. Obama accountable.

It is hard to see how the president has earned his respectable approval ratings. In 2012, let us hope that voters tally fairly his wins and losses. That accounting must surely open the door for the GOP; now all they need is a candidate.

Its not just the media, the voters really are giving him a pass in poll after poll after poll. He should have a huge disapproval rating and trailing everyone but Sarah Palin. Instead, the lowest approval he ever seems to get is in the mid-50's, and in a poll today he still handily beats everyone except Romney.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Americans’ disapproval of how President Barack Obama is handling the economy and its growing budget deficit has reached new highs amid broad frustration over the slow pace of economic recovery, according to a Washington Post-ABC New poll released on Tuesday.

The ratings boost Obama received after the killing of Osama bin Laden has dissipated with his job approval rating back to 47 percent. Forty-nine percent disapprove of his performance.

Obama’s approval rating bounced to 56 immediately after bin Laden was killed last month.

Fifty-nine percent, a new high, gave Obama negative marks for his handling of the economy, up from 55 percent a month earlier.

Obama’s approval rating on the deficit issue hit a new low of 33 percent, down 6 points since April.

The state of the economy poses a huge challenge for the president, whose re-election in 2012 may depend on his ability to convince voters that his economic policies have been successful.

The survey reflects a broadly pessimistic public mood as high gasoline prices, sliding home values and high unemployment numbers raised concerns about the pace of the U.S. economic recovery, The Washington Post said.

Eighty-nine percent of Americans say the economy is in bad shape; 57 percent say the recovery has not started and 66 percent said the United States was seriously on the wrong track.

Forty-five percent said they trust congressional Republicans over Obama to handle the economy, up 11 points since March.

Thank you. Brainiac asked for some of Obama's achievements that make him worthy of being re-elected, so I stepped right up to the plate & helped him out - glad to be of service! You see, the OP question of "Why Do Americans Continue to Give Obama a Pass?" only makes sense to Faux-type sheeple. The type that has already swallowed to anti-Obama propaganda. George Bush was such a horrendous failure & so unpopular that the Faux sheeple are trying to paint Obama with the Dubya brush, but it ain't working so good.

At home & abroad, Bush was considered little more than a drooling moron. So the Faux sheeple try to paint Obama with the same brush. They point at a constitutional scholar, President of the Harvard Law Review, & try to convince others that he's stupid like Bush. It ain't working.

Consensus opinion is that Bush has the speaking skills of a grunting baboon, so Faux sheeple point at Obama (renowned for his eloquent speaking skills) & try to convince others that, like Bush, he needs a teleprompter to be coherent. Folks just aren't buying it.

Our European allies polled Bush as "stupid." So Faux sheeple try to convince others that Obama insults our Euro allies. Ain't working - they love Obama (97% approval in Germany).

Etc.
Etc.
Etc.

Get over it.... Bush was so dramatically unpopular cuz he was Bush. Obama won't be Bush just cuz you guyz try to convince others that he is. In spite of high gas prices & slow economy, Obama is a popular president. Remember, his latest disapproval rating of 42% includes 10-13% that think he not "left" enough, that he caves in to Republis too much. You Faux sheeple people are only a minority if 28-30% Folks aren't buying what you're selling.

When the President's approval rating was down at 42% at the end of the year, his disapproval rating with Democrats had jumped from 11% in November to 21% in December. They are pissed that he's not LEFT enough, that he caves to the Republis too much. Thats a big chunk of his disapproval rating, folks. No way in hell are the people that think the President is too right wing are ever going to vote for a Repuli - no matter who it is. The President's disapproval rating is in no way a unanimous endorsement of Repuli policy, its a mix of RWNJs & lefties who will NOT be voting for a Republi.

Republicans like Roy that want to stomp around about Obama being in office need to take a look at the party they support and wonder why they couldn't (can't) do any better to oppose a green democrat. Indeed. Obama is in office right now thanks to the repubs throwing McCain and Palin into the fray. Republicans like Roy that want to stomp around about Obama being in office need to take a look at the party they support and wonder why they couldn't (can't) do any better to oppose a green democrat. Not to mention that he's not American and most likely a muslim sleeper cell.

Some like Roy already knows the R's crapped in their bed the last 2 election cycles. The fact that the D's promised " CHANGE " you can believe in hasn't worked out very well. They took it upon themselves to push / ram throught their idealogue / agenda upon the American people who did not and does not want it.

Obama's record clearly speaks for itself.

Can the R's do any better with a candidate? It's left to be seen, the real problem lies with the house and the senate. The POTUS is limited to just about powerless if they choose to deflect him.

Getting all 3 branches the same has always lead to disaster...... hence past and current administration.

Roy didn't like his policies before and after 2+ years, it's worst than I thought.

Whose fault is it that you took a politican at his word? Did you sincerely believe that there was going to be massive, sweeping change? Change is what the country wanted at the end of BushCo's run. He milked that saying for everything he could, and it got him the White House, bottom line.

Say McCain had won the presidency. Do you think the country would be in an appreciably better position today if he had, and if so, why?

Yes, I do . No ObamaCare, very likely less money spent than the current administration has spent. After all, Obama had 2 years of a free ride on anything he wanted, reason this past election the house changed over. FP would have been the same, strong, not weaker due to a butt kissing world tour and throwing allies under a bus ( you just can't take your allies and degrade them without justifiable cause).

But, we will never know, he didn't win, but I do feel a R POTUS with a D house & senate would have been in better shape than a D,D & D ( Dumb, Dumb & Dumber ) factor for 2 years.

On a serious note - who the hell would want to be president these days? Everything everywhere is ****ed six ways to Sunday, you live your life in the most transparent bubble ever created, you're guaranteed to piss off roughly half to two thirds of the people you lead in your country, and you take the blame for anything and everything that could conceivably go wrong on your watch, whether you had a hand in it or not. Crazy.

It only makes sense to folks that have a working knowledge of basic grade-school arithmetic. The latest CNN- Opinion Research poll has the President's approval rating even at 48-48%. A good chunk of that disapproval rating is from lefties that are pissed that Obama defers far too often to the rightwing. The lefties that are peaved that the President is too centrist are not going to vote for a Republi. Do the math - its simple, easy, basic arithmetic. The approval rating of the President as a person is 75 freakin' percent. Granted, folks are certainly concerned about the economy - but they also sure as heck are not buying the anti-Obama crap that the RWNJ haters are barfing up.

I have no idea where this 75% lives as I moved from Kansas a red state to North Carolina a blue state and rarely encountered a supporter in either state. 1 out of 7 on food stamps around 50k for every man woman and child to repay our debt. 9.1 unemployment (not counting those who have run out or are under employed) McDonalds is the major jobs increase. All that tells me is if 75% is true then ¾ of the voters are idiots~
