View Full Version : Food and Drink What's the strangest food you've eaten?

All the hamburger threads got me thinking about the strangest things I've eaten.

I've had possum, raccoon, escargot, rattle snake, alligator... I had some very fresh shrimp the other day and really wanted to try sucking the heads, but just couldn't do it. Will have to try again sometime.

Vegemite? **** that shit.

I don't know if that's the strangest, but it's definitely the nastiest.

I was in Australia and they had it on the table. I thought it was like jelly and put a bunch of it on my toast. One bite, and I had my entire salt intake for life. In all seriousness, for the rest of the day whenever I would think about the taste of it I would have to fight a gag reflex. That stuff is nasty.

I've done the same list of semi-exotic foods. Ostrich (in West Virginia of all places), crocodile (in Australia), ox (in Nepal), squirrel (at my grandmother's house), antelope (every freakin' day in South Africa), and some big fish with teeth that stared up from my plate in Madagascar.

fish sperm "soup" with a quails egg on it. Raw conch, raw octopus, sea urchin eggs, pretty much all types of other sushi and sashimi as well while I lived in Japan. Boar, snake, gator, possum, coon, squirrel, and lots of different birds. I'd say the strangest was some pickled shrimp I ate overseas on rice. Mega Funk!

I think I've told this story before, but when I went to Korea I had almost no notice and had no idea how to speak the language. So I learned to pronounce the words when I read them and that was it.

I had a room but no way to cook food, and I was in a neighborhood where I was the only non-Korean. So I would go into a restaurant, order something completely randomly by reading a line on the menu, and then I'd write down what it was so I'd know in the future.

You get some very unusual stuff that way. I remember getting some kind of soup once that had all sorts of stuff with tentacles and things floating in it.

When I was a kid we always went into my friend's pasture to play with fireworks. Since we were kids, our funds were pretty limited so I bought some cheap firecrackers (I think the brad was TNT). Anway, we liked to stick the firecrackers into cow poop and watch the go plop. So, I stuck a firecracker into a particularly fresh and juicy patty. I went to light the fuse but it fizzled out about halfway down. I bent over to re light the half fuse and as soon as it caught the fuse instantly burned down to nothing and it went KUHBLAMMO! My face was completely covered in poop. It was in my eyes, nose, and mouth...everywhere. It was both gross and embarrassing. My friend laughed so hard that he cried.

Ate live conch when I lived in the British Virgin Islands. Pretty good 'cept for their eyes are on stalks & they they look at you as you chomp down - gives you the creeps. Ate magic mushrooms that grow out of cow-pies in Hawaii. After about 45 minutes you forget all about the fact that you just ate something that grows in shit.... well worth it!

I've had gator and escargot which were both very good, oysters on the halfshell which were a waste of money. My mom used to buy frozen rabbit at the grocery store occasionally and it was pretty damn good. Done frog legs quite a few times as well.

I've eaten dog and dried squid in Korea. Horse and eel while living in Europe. Here in the US I've eaten turtle, possum and squirrel. In Iraq I had camel steaks. I also ate a ground meat and spice dish that, when I asked my hosts what type of meat, was told "all kinds."

Burgoo, many times.

It redefines the term, Mystery Meat... vegetable soup with any & every kind of hill meat you can imagine.

Second would be alligator, chicken fried in fish grease.
