View Full Version : Colts vs. Chiefs 2010

This is a repository for my thoughts regarding this pivotal game of the 2010 season against the Colts.
Not much to say, except I'm doing this as a bit of a thought experiment. I'm going to watch as much of this game as my energy and spare time allows.
There's a little postwhoring to this, so forgive me.

Colts win cointoss, Chiefs kick off the game by trying an onside kick to the far side.
Other than the actual kick, it was very well executed.
Arenas was clearly the "hands" guy on the squad, while Copper, Mays, and another player were instructed to bring the lumber.
The play took the Colts by surprise so badly, they only had one guy in the same zip code as the ball, and he was leveled by the player I can't identify.
Succop's kick dribbles eight yards, however. Colts ball on the Chiefs' 40.

1 and 10 on the Chiefs 36
Chiefs are super light in their package. Super light. They've got two down lineman, one of them is Gilberry on the strong side, Edwards manning the nose, and Hali's standing at the LOS. Everybody else is linebacker or secondary.
Colts give the ball to Addai to run it in the RG-RT gap. Gilberry is double-teamed and washed out of the play. Edwards is largely neutralized.
The play turns out to only be a couple yard gain, as Vrabel punishes the tight end trying to block him and pushes him deep into Addai's lap, forcing him to cut sooner than he wanted where a zipping Hali wraps him down.

2 and 8 on the Chiefs 34
Manning in shotgun. Even smaller lineup this time by the Chiefs. Two down lineman, Edwards and Gilberry. Hali is standing but he's back closer to the tight end.
Manning makes the right read and immediately checks down as the Chiefs drop eight. The dumpoff is to Addai in the flat with nobody in his zipcode -- Flowers was dropping to cover Clark who was split out wide, Vrabel was playing more of a MLB position. McGraw was clearly the guy who should have been watching the flats, but he dropped about eight yards back into no-man's land before rallying up to get to Addai to make the tackle.
Gain of six.

3rd and 2 on the Chiefs 28
Manning in shotgun with Addai, three wide. Chiefs have the same light lineup but now Dorsey's at nose, Hali's hand is in the dirt on the blind side, Vrabel's poking in between the DL on the strong side. Chiefs are clearly using him as the defense's counter-quarterback, to hear Manning's audibles and change the defense in response.
Colts take advantage of the small DL by running up the LG, right at Hali who is neutralized by the LT as the LG stalls DJ at the hole. Dorsey is obliterated at the LOS.
Addai gets about five yards and a first down. DJ does get to him eventually but he's in first down territory by the time he does.

1 and 10 on the Chiefs 23
Manning under center, Addai alone in the backfield. Chiefs have a slightly small package on the field, Dorsey on the strongside, Edwards at the nose, and Hali with his hand in the dirt on the blindside.
Handoff to Addai up the gut. Edwards and Hali get washed, and Addai splits them for a ten yard gain. The play was supposed to go to the right side but Dorsey and Belcher were putting up too big a fight and the left was wide open.
The other problem was DJ reading the play too well and overpursuing to the strong side, leaving nobody to backup Edwards & Hali. It's seven yards before Lewis gets a hit on him.

2nd and 1 on the Chiefs 14
Manning under center, double tight end with two wide to the right. Addai alone in the backfield. Dorsey is strongside, Edwards at nose, Hali is weakside with McGraw cheating in to help.
Predictably, they run right at Hali and McGraw, DJ sprints up to hit the hole Addai is heading for but gets destroyed by a guard at the second level, and the safeties are so deep that Addai gets another ten yards. Lewis eventually gets there.

1st and goal on the Chiefs 3
Exact same formation by the Colts, to a T. Exact same. Same with the Chiefs and their small lineup as well.
This time they try the same play to the strong side, into Dorsey with Belcher hitting the hole. Belcher gets pushed pretty good, but DJ gets penetration from the other side and McGraw darts across the LOS pretty quickly to get onto Addai, who still powers for a couple more yards.

2nd and goal on the Chiefs 1
Both teams obviously have their goal line units out. Manning is under center with Addai dotting the i formation. Shaun Smith has made his first appearance in the game and he is low at the 1-tech, Edwards on the other side. Gilberry and Dorsey on the ends, with help from Hali and Vrabel on Dorsey's end, and Stude and McGraw on Gilberry's.
Colts attempt to run the ball to Gilberry and Stude, but Smith levels their interior line, allowing for a quick flow to the ball. But more importantly, Stude holds up his blocker extremely well, pushing him back into Addai.
This gives Addai nowhere to go as DJ converges like a bullet for a loss of 1.

3rd and goal on the Chiefs 2
Colts spread out the D with Manning in shotgun. He's got four wide and Addai to his right. Chiefs have gone light as well. Only down lineman are Gilberry and Dorsey. Hali stands on the blind side.
Manning has Reggie Wayne in the back of the endzone but due to Hali charging unchallenged into his face, can't plant his foot and has to hurry a lob. Carr was out of position but thanks to Hali's pressure, recovered enough to almost intercept the pass.

Viniateri (sp?) kicks the FG.

Over 10 minutes left in the first, kickoff makes it to McCluster in the end zone.
McCluster takes the kick two deep, but returns it anyway. Really poor blocking and McCluster's bad decision to return the kick means the Chiefs get the ball inside the 20.

1st and 10 at the Chiefs 18
Cassel under center, three wide, Jones in the backfield with Cox staggered off to the side.
Chiefs run TJ and between Waters and Albert, seem to have a pretty good path paved for him on the left side. Problem is, Moaeki couldn't contain a rusher off the far left, forcing TJ to redirect to the right side. B-Rich was whiffing on the right side and no other help was present. Bowe did have a nice seal on the near side, however.

2nd and 8, Chiefs 20
Cassel under center, TJ with Cox staggered to the strong side, two TEs on the strong side.
Colts bite on a fake to TJ, as Cassel spins and fires a shot to Terrance Copper on the weak side slant. Copper never gets open on the route, but he does get the inside of the route for the catch and gets nailed immediately. Gain of 5.

3rd and 3, Chiefs 25
Really interesting lineup, two tight ends, Castille of all people in the backfield, with McCluster staggered off to the weak side. Only Bowe out wide on the far side.
Moaeki in motion to the near side, and Cassel drops back five steps to fire a shallow out route to McCluster. who ran the route out of the backfield.
McCluster is waaaay too quick for the guy manning him -- gets the reception and it takes a rally from some deep cornerback to force him out of bounds. Gain of what looks like five yards.
