A deal by Friday might be a long shot. A weekend deal seems possible if the talks continue that long based on potential late-week progress.

I'd be afraid to have him as the voice of the NFL but maybe he just says what the owners want. Kind of ala Bob Gretz with Carl Peterson.

Mediator starts vacation on Saturday

Posted by Mike Florio on July 6, 2011, 5:31 PM EDT

And now there’s another reason for the principals in the labor dispute to roll up their sleeves, pack a lunch, and focus on the task at hand.

According to ESPN.com, U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan is scheduled to start a vacation on Saturday. As a result, ESPN.com reports that the parties “hope to achieve a true framework for a new CBA by the close of business on Friday.”

Maybe they will, and maybe they won’t. But the fact that Boylan starts a vacation reinforces the reality that the two sides should have kept at it over the Fourth of July weekend.

Instead, the key figures will be renewing acquaintances on Thursday, with only two days to get something done before Boylan, who played a key role last week in averting an implosion of the talks, becomes unavailable.

The time for talking about working hard is over. If the NFL and the players intend to save the preseason and the cash that comes from it, they need to truly work hard.

Matt Cassel weighs in with his thoughts at 6 o'clock on the lockout. Sounding more and more like it will be wrapped up by July 15th.

It'll get done before training camp. That sound you hear is the toilet flushing all the gazillions of dollars if they don't get this wrapped up. They will though. I can't believe some people thought there wouldn't be a season or even that some of the season would be cancelled. There is simply too much money to be made and lost. They aren't stupid.

Dude they have at most a week to get things done before they lose millions of dollars.

I don't know how the mediator going on vacation affects things but as it stands they needed to reach a deal by July 15 in order to not lose any money.

Not sure because it's been reported the more money owners lose the more they take out of revenue sharing.

On another note, do you think the football is gonna be bad for like a month or so because of no OTAs, etc.

Chocolate Hog

Well Lombardi is saying if there is an agreement teams will have a 3 day OTA right before training camp but yes I think the lockout will handicap rookies and guys who need things like OTA's to be motivated for staying in shape. I also think it'll really effect free agents who are adapting to a new system.

Yep. The unwritten target is July 15. They want the deal done by July 22 at the latest because that's when the Bears and Rams (both teams play in the Hall of Fame game) start their training camps. Both parties don't want to lose preseason game money or any money period. It'll get done, IMO. If I heard right, once a deal gets done it has to get approved by the court, which shouldn't be a problem, IIRC.

The talks remain very fragile. It's not at all clear if progress will continue or if there will be an accord on the split-of-revenues issue.

Nobody asssociated with the NFL wants to lose the revenues to come from even a shit ass game like Bears v Rams. Millions to be lost.

They should really cancel the HoF game. It's not fair to the two teams playing to have to play a game on such short notice and on a limited number of practices.
