Yeah, I think he's been a bit bewildered by the Kansas City media from day 1 for making him such a central figure. In his mind Haley is and should be the face of the franchise. In New England it might have been that way, but he replaced King Carl.

Great for Hali and great for the Chiefs fans.

By John Clayton

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali cashed in on a career year in 2010 by reaching a five-year, $60 million deal that includes $35 million in guarantees, a source said Wednesday.

Hali is now the second-highest paid outside linebacker in the league behind DeMarcus Ware of the Cowboys. The Chiefs had previously placed the franchise tag on Hali to keep him from free agency.

Hali racked up 14.5 sacks last season to lead the AFC and was named to his first Pro Bowl. He was a large part of the Chiefs' ascension to AFC West champions.

The 27-year-old Hali has been a playmaker for the Chiefs' defense since they drafted him in the first round in 2006. He began his career as a 4-3 defensive end, but a move to the 3-4 defense turned him into one of the best pass-rushers in football.

John Clayton is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.

If they called half the times Tamba was held, he'd probably have had over 20 sacks last year. Just in that video red_5 posted he was held like 1/3 of the time and still got the sack.

No.

You have to pay them, for 1 year, at the average of the top 5 players at their position the year before.

It doesn't let you keep an extra player. It lets you lock up a would-be unrestricted free agent to a 1 year deal. I believe the pricetag is generally the average of the top 5 salaries for the player's position, but could be wrong on that. It has no value at this point. UFAs have either re-signed with their teams or signed with new ones, or they suck and wouldn't be worth paying that ridiculous one-year price tag.

i wonder if this is the new type of deal

60 mill w/ 35 mill guaranteed (a crap load)

whereas pre new-CBA that contract might have looked liked

70 mill with 25 mill guaranteed

a bigger total number for 'show' (and for agents), but with smaller actual guarantees...now with draft pick salaries slashed teams can really drop cash on vets, making the 'show' number less important

Disturbing.

I thought I was excited by the signing of McClain yesterday. NOW I AM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!! I am starting to believe this could be a good season and locking up Hali for the next 5 years has finally started to remove some of the "don't give a shit" I have been fighting all offseason.

This team is looking good on paper. Now for Haley to pull it all together and get the potential to show on Sundays. We may have overachieved last year but I think we can repeat that success and maybe even build on it even with this schedule.

Funny, he kinda' reminds me of old testament God.

And not in the good way...

I think you are closer :) The old testament god apart from being a genocidal, jealous, blood thirsty monster, would **** people up if they crossed him. Kinda like Pioli :)

Work ethic isn't even a question in my eyes. No way this dude drops a turd after getting the big payday.Yeah, I don't think it's in his character.

i wonder if this is the new type of deal

60 mill w/ 35 mill guaranteed (a crap load)

whereas pre new-CBA that contract might have looked liked

70 mill with 25 mill guaranteed

a bigger total number for 'show' (and for agents), but with smaller actual guarantees...now with draft pick salaries slashed teams can really drop cash on vets, making the 'show' number less importantYeah, I was just listening to Petro on the way home and it was pretty clear that he doesn't get that part of it. He's lauding Hali for giving up some money for a shorter term deal, talking about how "he must want to play football" (which I think he does, but that's beside the point...), because his deal is only 5 years against Charles Johnson's 6-year, $72 million contract. But he's completely missing the fact that Hali's getting more in guaranteed money.

It's not about how long the contract is, it never has been and it isn't now. The 6th and 7th years on contracts have always been a mirage that's ultimately either restructured or never outright paid. It's just padding.

They gave Hali at least $35 million guaranteed, which is 3-5 million more than Johnson.

He got paid, in a big way...

exactly...he got more guaranteed than Berry or Cassel...$35 mill is a freakin train load of guaranteed cash in the nfl...

petro, as usual, misses the point

isnt that what everyone said right up until FA started?

then it was that we are cheap and dont want to win...

i think its more about building this team for the long haul and doing it the right way, with players that FIT.

Transition tag, IIRC.

Transition tag is the average of the top 10 players at the position.

It's really helpful when you've already run a successful business and you're not constantly scrambling around trying to find people who have some idea how to.

I think time has answered the age old Marty/Carl argument...

Well, yes, and no.

Most of the nucleus of those teams that Marty took to the playoffs in the early 90s were Steadman picks.

As the years passed, much of the team were free agent additions.

95% of the players drafted throughout the Cral tenure, including while Marty was here, were garbage.

where are all the guys saying we are cheap at today?

Cheap bastards won't open their wallets and give Hali a deal like Charles Johnson.
