Depends on where you live. Not sure about Michigan but in California you do.

Just looked it up yes you have to have a CCW to carry concealed or open in a vehicle in Michigan.

That's why carjacking is very rare here in Phoenix even though it is a very big city. No permit needed to carry and everyone has one.
