I just don't understand how he could get that type of money without the top draft picks pushing the contract market. -_-

Wow... $15 million a year for a WR?

Arizona just turned the entire WR market upside down.

I guess it depends how it's structured

lol this type of contract for a WR really fucks over the Titans. This makes Chris Johnson that much harder to sign because he already wanted more than what any RB/WR was already making, now the precedent has been set even higher. CJ could hold out even longer, and there is no way he takes less than 10 mil a season at this point.

At least we have Charles locked up for awhile. Bowe will be tough, but we got to bring him back now, especially with all the unknowns of Jon Brawldwin

What a contract. I mean having good WR's is great and all, and you can't trot crap out there like the Chiefs have most of the last 20 years... but WR's just don't win championships.

True...but the last 7 Super Bowls they've sure showed up.

Super Bowl XLV, Nelson & Jennings tore it up last year. IMO, if Nelson hadn't caught everything thrown his way, Jennings could have won MVP or the other way around.
Super Bowl XLIII , S. Holmes MVP
Super Bowl XLII, Plexiglass
Super Bowl XL, Hines Ward MVP
Super Bowl XXXIX, Deion Branch

Before this past decade of what some may call "dominance", you'd have to go back 15 years before there was a MVP of the SB.
Super Bowl XXIII Jerry Rice

Jordy Nelson was maddeningly inconsistent in the Super Bowl. He'd make a spectacular catch and then turn right around and drop any easy one.

Just an insane amount of money for a WR. Hes definately top 2 or 3 in the league, but the problem is that position is totally dependant on another position (QB) to be successful.

On the flip flop, sometimes teams are forced to overpay because then the fanbase perception becomes "your cheap, or you drive away stars" Stars help drive ticket sales.

We always do that, too. We can never get everyone together in the tiny window between the last PS game & the season opener. Everyone shares the same risk so it's really not a big deal.

maybe, with the new cba, teams can afford to give this type of money to non-QB positions and not hamper themselves...

but I'm still skeptical that any non-QB is worth that kind of dough...

BigRichard

Yeah, I thought that was the entire reason for the rookie scale. Rookies make less so the actual talent can make more. After the new CBA this will probably be the norm. He was just the first to do so.

DJ's left nut
08-22-2011, 10:28 AM
Welcome to the new CBA.

Overall revenues are going to go way up, the amount allocated to rookies has gone down - it stands to reason that the amount going to veterans is likely to increase by quite a bit, doesn't it?

I'd have to see how those last 2 or 3 years break down before I flip my shit. This has all the looks of a 5 yr deal with 3 'dump' years at the end. I'm also curious how much of the guaranteed money is set up as a roster bonus this season or something like that; what can they frontload onto the cap now?

This is probably a fairly unique contract when you start to really dig into it - I'll be very curious to see the terms.

Meh, we do it as late as possible. We usually aim for the 3rd PS game. We had to have it last Friday this year. I really don't see what's "not smart" about it considering everyone is taking the same risk that someone will get hurt. Everyone is taking the same chance.
