Beginning in June of 2011, all new cars manufactured and sold in the United States will be required to have a mandated black box device installed, which can be used to monitor several different physical and technical data points.

On May 24th, a report on the new regulatations to be implemented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) next month expands the program that in February was just in a consideration phase.

Don't buy a new car. Time to bring these clowns back down to earth and hit them in the pocketbook. Land of the FREE?

This is from 2010. It appears this has been going on longer than I thought.

"Some drivers may not know they have an EDR, although automakers typically disclose that information in the owner's manual"

O.K. so after doing some more searching on the matter, I have come to this conclusion: They have been around for along time. They are not yet mandatory, but most cars have them. In the event of a crash it provides a snapshot of the final moments before impact. This snapshot can be viewed by cops, and insurance companies. You don't know if you have one unless you find it in your owners manual. It can't be turned off.

I apologize for starting this thread, obviously that article was mostly misleading. I jumped the gun. My bad. I own it.

Heh. I listen to Pandora at work, and I discovered RATM about a year ago. I really like the music, but it's kind of funny that I didn't realize the socialist/communist angst until recently.

RATM is one of the first bands that caught my attention when I returned from Germany in ’92 but yea, there’s some serious anti-US Government, anti-capitalism anger there. Course that’s implied in the name Rage against the Machine. “Machine” = soulless US corporate run government.

I would think that these would be about the same level of complexity as a cable converter box. Not hard to bypass.

I use to do contract work for GM over 10 years ago, and I believe every car that came off the line had them back then. It is for safety reasons.

Safety reasons? . . . or Barack Obama wants to rape your children's future and Congress hates your freedoms reasons?

Bought a new car this year and I noticed this mentioned in the manual. It records crash related data like engine rpm, throttle position, what gear the car was in, if the brakes were applied, etc.

My car has no gps capability or homelink system, so I guess what you tinfoil hat types will tell me is that I its all secretly there, and I just don't know it?

They aren't for safety reasons, they are to protect manufacturers from litigation.

Exhibit A, old fart puts his Camry in D instead of R, drives into a pond, claims it is actually a decepticon and tried to kill him. $9999999999999999 lawsuit.

And the next buyer of a Camry pays $25 more for it.

ding ding ding. That is exactly why it is there. It records what the care does right before a crash, but it is far from perfect (at least was the case 10 years ago). They tout it being used for safety,(like they care) to help determine what happened to cause a crash, like a planes black box, but make no mistake it is used to cover their ass.

I wonder why they don't just integrate it into the ECM.
