You might wonder: Do kids really need their own 9/11 show?
If they’re too young to remember, maybe that’s a blessing.
Then listen to the real youngsters in the opening montage of this Nickelodeon special.
One kid believes 500 planes disappeared that day. Another thinks the Japanese were responsible. Still another wonders if the terrorist attacks ever took place.
“What Happened? The Story of September 11, 2001,” a commercial-free half-hour, attempts to explain the events of that fateful day and explores the aftermath in the last decade.
Host and writer Linda Ellerbee dispels the misconceptions in language kids can understand without frightening them. While the special draws on archival footage, the most graphic images of the attacks are not displayed here.
“The simple fact of what happened is scary,” Ellerbee says.
In the best moments, youngsters ask the sort of simple, direct questions that adults might be embarrassed to voice.
Who was behind the attack? How could airline security fail to stop the hijackers? Should we blame Muslims?
Commenting on the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in this country, Tom Kean, chairman of the 9/11 Commission, reminds viewers that Osama bin Laden wanted nothing more than a war between Christians and Islamists.
“The best thing we can do to get rid of bin Laden’s legacy is to get along with each other,” he says.
The show’s obvious flaw is its length — it zips across a lot of ground in a half-hour and that leads to a compression of information that wouldn’t fly on Wikipedia. The tangent on weapons of mass destruction might confuse some adults, never mind kids.
