They definitely have an advantage though in Dallas over being in the middle of nowhere Lubbock. Nothing against Lubbock, but that might have helped keep the Big XII together. Didn't seem like too many of those west coast schools or alumni liked the idea of having to travel to Lubbock or Stillwater every year.

I get that and that is a benefit. I do think that having 'Christian' in your colleges name is going to turn off a decent amount of recruits.

I bet quite a few don't know what TCU stands for. AT any rate, I'm guessing if it is an issue, TCU wouldn't want them anyhow.

Because there's so many Jewish football players?

Because Turner Gill's done such a fine job of getting top shelf talent.

Baylor's been awful forever. BYU can't seem to sustain success. Even Notre Dame is struggling, though I would imagine that's due to academic standards more than anything.

I'm not saying it's a lock that the religious angle drives recruits away, but I've always though it was an interesting question. Some recruits, kids like Brad Smith and RGIII (and of course Tebow) are pretty up front about their religion, but I think a lot more are going to just shy away from it being put in front of them like that.

Think of it this way - how many 'regional' Universities are considered to be terribly prestigious? Not many, that's largely what fueled SMS to change its name to Missouri State. It's not a perfect analogue, but its similar - there's something to a school's name. Even if its only subconsciously, I do believe there are some good recruits that would pass on TCU because of the religious affiliation.

They'll be a very interesting case study.

comparatively, it's kind of pathetic considering missouri's population is nealry double that of kansas, and the issue of 2 BCS schools instead of one.

By comparison to other states its size Missouri should have all kinds of conference titles, national titles, final fours, bcs games, hall of famers, etc etc

except they have pretty much none of that.

I've been studying the phenomenon for nearly 30 years now and can't figure it out.

It's actually quite impressive.

Like I said - whatever helps you sleep at night.

Alternatively, you could point out that Missouri has 5 major professional sports teams as well as a handful of other professional teams in lesser sports (soccer, etc...) and that the entertainment options in Missouri absolutely obliterate those available in Kansas, thus the fact that so many Missouri entertainment dollars are spent on University of Missouri football in a professional sports state is actually very damn impressive. So basically, Missouri is not a college sports state, point made, got it.
That does clear up why their fans feel like they need to be in a stronger conference,............ I think.
It is quite obvious it is not due to past performance.

But then again, you're pretty much functionally retarded, so that's probably above your head.

Keep trying, chief. Sooner or later someone will make a salient argument for you and you'll be able to latch onto it. Unfortunately it appears that Saulbadguy and Pants are tired of carrying your water, so you may have to wait awhile.

Mellinger makes the case for the Big 12 tournament staying in KCMO even if Mizzou leaves. He also says the Big 12 is unlikely to break its contract with Sprint Center to have the tournament through 2014.

This would be the best outcome for KU, KSU, and ISU fans, even if Sprint Center is in Missouri.

He makes a good point about the bowl games. The Big XII has contracts with 7 bowls, and only 3 of them are in Big XII states (surprisingly, all in Texas).

We can schedule bowl games outside the Big XII footprint but not a basketball tournament?

Also, the Big XII is pretty much giving up Kansas City as a market if they move the tourney. There will still be alums of KU and KSU, but the casual, unaffiliated fan won't grow up bonding with the conference from their experiences in the Big XII tourney. They'll have to settle for watching football games against Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, etc. and basketball games against Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas, and Tennessee.

There's a meeting starting right now. Supposedly, yesterday's meeting wasn't going to even touch on re-alignment. The rumor is that they actually voted to leave the conference yesterday and notified the conference of their exit and are voting to apply to the SEC today. Just a rumor, though.

I'm not trying to force it. I don't think it will stay beyond 2014 when the contract ends, and I wouldn't blame the conference if it doesn't (if there is a conference then which I tend to doubt). It's not a no-brainer, though.

810 had OU's announcer on a week or two ago and basically said nobody there gives Missouri leaving or staying a second thought (referring to fan base). So you can imagine how much the east coast brass that is ESPN cares.

It's not about Missouri, it's about the conferences, dog. ESPN scrawled the shit out of the B12 and BIG10 and the SEC rumors (that includes the MU to BIG10 rumors).

Sounds like the speculated timeline is correct, that the vote would be held today, and the formal invitation was predicted to be early next week, IIRC

So they let the "it's up to KU whether the rivalry ends" circulate in the local media for several days, and announce when the formalities are concluded.

Who is better in the Big XII? Arkansas has won a NC and played in another in the last 20 years. Kentucky has won 2 since then, played in another, and been in the Final Four 5 times in that span. Florida has won 2 national championships since then.

Who in the Big XII can compete with that? Kansas would be the second best program in the SEC. Who else in the Big XII even holds a candle to Florida?

The NCAA tournament was a secondary tournament back then, similar to what the NIT is now. That's not a direct comparison because it had a little more prestige, but it wasn't the national championship.

Oh yeah, the NCAA tournament was for conference and regional champions while the NIT was for 6 teams invited by a committee. I see your point. Before the tournaments, there were obviously no champions. Good call, man.

CCNY won the NIT in 1950.

They are the Champions.

If you want to consider the NCAA tourney the national championship from 60 years ago, go for it. Its not true, but it's not important enough to bother disputing. Congrats on maybe having the best group of white-only set-shooters six decades ago.

Tradition is tradition. Football ain't the same as it was 60 years ago, either.

You're right, though, this argument is irrelevant.

There aren't bad teams in SEC football. Shit, Kentucky has been to something like 5 or 6 straight bowl games. Vanderbilt is the worst team in the SEC, and they aren't awful.

There is only one basketball school in the Big XII, and that's Kansas. Kentucky basketball trumps Kansas any day (7 national championships compared to 2). Then you've got Florida with 2 recent titles whereas the entire Big XII has 1 in the last 20 years.

KU has three, but who is counting, right? Especially when the facts hurt your point. In the last 50 years Kentucky has won 3 and KU 2. In the last 25 it is 2 and 2.

My point was, you keep referring to the strong teams in the SEC and the weak ones in the "big 9," as you have through out this thread.

Honestly, I am really glad Mizzou is going, and look forward to the results. They did do a good job today, no doubt about that.

So, it's 8 (7, actually) for UK and not 3, but 2 for KU and not 3...

He shouldn't be mad. His (supposed) beef was the KC economy, and Mizzou showed they care for both the university and KC so they are going to have a basketball tournament and football game. Hopefully KU agrees to play to continue the rivalry and help KC, but if not Mizzou will join up with other local teams.

It was a pretty brilliant strategy to be honest.

They won national championships in 1988 and 2008. Other than that, they never won anything.

This fits your entire posting mantra in this thread.

You don't count the 1952 for KU, but you count the 4 from 1948 to 1958 for UK.

I expect Kietzman to have Mizzou's back and call on KU and K-State to follow Missouri's lead and do what's best for Kansas City. He should propose a Big XII SEC showdown preseason tourney in the Sprint Center with Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, and Kentucky. Think that would draw fans?

The football game to me is a tossup.

Biggest reason is the way college football has devolved into pretty much just being a showcase for NFL players anyway these days. Are we going to have any close games this year on a big stage??

CFB is a great gameday atmosphere with the tailgating, girls, and parties.

Basketball is a much more grind of a sport night in and night out. Much more complex when it comes to scheduling.

Plus the money will be too big for either school to pass up with the annual event.

Agreed, no team has actually won it all in (2) decades, but IMO they have mattered. I know 1988 doesn't fit into your "modern era" but OU had a pretty nice run that year. Texas has had several, OSU and others have had the teams to do it.

Do you think Florida will continue with the pattern they set of two championships? They missed the tournament 2 years in a row, then lost first round. But there is hope for them, the lost to Butler last year. :D

But then again, I am not sure why we are even discussing this. The SEC doesn't give a crap about College BB. Just ask Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan, Kevin Stallings, Mike Anderson etc.

If KU were to bend over keep playing MU, it would basically turn into the MU/Illinois game. :yawn

There is no incentive for KU to agree to play MU, in Missouri, if MU were to go to the SEC. In football, KU can make that money up in another game. In basketball, it doesn't benefit KU at all financially; any more than scheduling some low-level D1 school. So, that leaves the rivalry; which is built on ego and spite. Both schools are at fault here. And as far as I'm concerned, it shows how strong the hatred is for one another.

The hate is stronger than the rivalry. That says a lot.

It couldn't be something more obvious - like he was wrong about Hoenig being the President in waiting for the MU system.

As far as Illinois goes, MU/Illinois don't have a 100+ year history. Champaign is 200 miles from the nearest big city in Missouri. Missourians never burned Champaign to the ground. That is a piss-poor comparison.

It wouldn't be the same at all. The fact that KU and MU are in the same conference makes the rivalry that much stronger. Relegating it to one game per year would significantly diminish it.
