View Full Version : Computers What would you do in this situation?

Yes, this is a computer related question. If a mod thinks this needs to be moved to Media Center, feel free. I just wanted to get as many opinions on this as possible as well as possibly some expert advice.

My wife left the laptop sitting on the coffee table with the cord stretch across between the table and the recliner. My dog ran between, caught the cord, and the laptop fell onto the hardwood floor. The screen cracked. It still worked but the area up in the corner by the crack was messed up.

I ordered a screen from this place in Canada (laptopscreen.com, I think - verified them using resellerratings.com). It took quite a bit of taking stuff apart to get my screen out. Apparently, an Acer Aspire 6920 is a pain in this area. Anyway, I got the screen in and it was working. So I started putting everything back together and it went dark. Not completely dark as I could barely see the display. I tried putting the old screen back in to see if I damaged the new one. The old one wouldn't work, either.

At this point, I'm beyond my basic skills in this area so I looked for local computer repair shop. I found this lady who repairs computers (http://mycomputerlady.com/) for a flat rate of $65. I went with her rather than a big name because I wanted to save a few bucks. Why not give a young, local entrepreneur some business, right? I did do a little research to make sure she was on the up and up. Everything seemed okay.

Once she got it back to her shop and looked it over, she suggested the ribbon connecting the screen was damaged. She said if she held it with finger, it would come on back to the original brightness. It would be an extra $20 to replace. I told her to go ahead and order the new ribbon to fix it.

She calls me back a few days later and informs me that the new ribbon didn't fix the issue. So now she thinks it must be the gray cable that powers the screen or something like that. This cable will cost $40. At this point, I'm getting irritated but I need my laptop fixed so I tell her to go ahead. I should note that she told me before ordering either of these parts that if they did not fix it, she would not charge me for them and she would just ship them back for a refund.

A few days later, she got the new gray (screen power?) cable. She informs me that it did not fix the issue. Then she suggests (once again - she also mentioned this when I first explained the issue) I check the return on the laptop screen to see if maybe the screen is damaged. I suggest to her that it did work at first so I know it wasn't DOA. And I don't believe I did anything to damage it while I was trying to install it. Not to mention why would the old one not work when I know it was working previously, even with the crack? And also not to mention why would the screen work when she put her finger on the ribbon just the right way?

At this point, it appears to me that she doesn't have a clue and is just fishing for a fix. She seems to think that if she keeps replacing parts, she will eventually stumble upon a fix. I'm not pleased but I tell her to just return the PC to me and I'll decide what to do with it later.

I ask her what I owe her and she is still charging me the $65 + tax. My initial thoughts are that I shouldn't have to pay the full rate since she never really fixed the issue. I would think it would be a good business practice to at least charge less. I realize she did work on it and therefore should at least be compensated for some time. But I paid the normal rate and didn't get my laptop repaired.

How would you guys handle this? Pay the full price and forget about it? Tell her I'm only gonna give her (some amount less) because she didn't fulfill her duty? Or tell her I will pay her full bill but I'm gonna make sure to report on the online places that she's listed my unsatisfactory experience?

Edit: She is returning it to me tomorrow. I haven't received the laptop or paid her as of yet.

Pay her the $65 unless she had some type of guarantee in her advertisement. Withhold $65 worth of food from your dog and wife.

Fixing screen issues on a laptop is a bitch, I bet she messed up the screen connector on the motherboard. Those damn things are delicate. I think at least a $20 discount is in order for $45.

Man, kudos on even trying to replace one of those, Lzen.

I would pay her the $65 and just never use her again. Live and learn and hopefully so will she. The girl did a bad job and will not be rewarded with return business from you. That's how capitalism works and it's a good system. :)

In the grand scheme of things, $65 is not as much as buying a new laptop. It's a different story if she damaged something in the process, however.

Laptop repair is dicey, I won't do it.

However, if I were her, I would not accept the $65. I'd accept whatever you would pay me, since I could not fix it. If she accepts the $65 without blinking, I wouldn't refer her to anyone.

Since you can still see a dark image on the screen, it must be the backlight that's not working. Ask your $65 friend if the inverter is part of the LCD screen that you replaced, or if it is inside the laptop itself.

Well, I paid her and got my laptop back today. She said she was putting it back together and forgot that the screws help ground it or something to that effect. So the old screen worked when she put it back together. But she put the new one in there and it did not work. Now that makes me think I should return the screen and get another.

Also, it should be noted that the old screen is (I believe) an LCD and the new one an LED. There is a converter that you just don't use when you hook up the LED. Not sure if that has anything to do with this problem.

So before I get another, I gotta make sure they gave me the right one. She also said if I get a replacement screen, she would put it in for me at no extra charge.

Hi Lzen!

Sorry to hear about your troubles, especially that you have paid $65 for unsuccessful repair. We would be more than happy to go over some troubleshooting with you over the phone once you get a chance.

From my experience, my first hunch is to question the integrity of the "gray cable" from the laptop to the inverter. So we have to determine that you are receiving power onto the inverter - best way to tell is to have the old screen plugged in, and briefly turn on the computer while it's powered from the AC adapter only (no battery).
If the old screen lights up we'll be 100% certain that we are able to power the new screen.
The new screen you received is an LED-CCFL conversion (LTN160AT06), because your original screen (I'm assuming Samsung's LTN160AT01) has been out of production since 2008-2009, and there's a world-wide shortage of exact replacements for that one.
Anyhow, we'd be happy to try to exchange the screen for you in-case troubleshooting fails, and if that does not work we will refund your purchase price of the LCD screen.

Ellis

Haha...

BTW Aspire 6920 is a really really really painful computer, and $65 is a low end estimate to take it apart and re-assemble back together (even if no repairs were done)

As ex GeekSquad, I can honestly tell you that I would not have accepted the repair for less than $149.99-labour (ofc we would charge only $49.99 for diagnostic if the repair was not successful)

Question: Does your laptop have a Video out that you can hook a monitor to? This would be a temp fix but at least you can recover whatever is important on your hard drive and save it in case you decide to trash the computer and get something new.

Actually I found the site by running Google query for "laptopscreen.com" filter: discussions; past week. It is something I do to make sure to address all customer concerns. And the reason I posted on your board, was a follow up of a phone conversation I've had with OP.

However, I do understand that this board is for a very specific interest, in which I have no expertise nor experience, so this thread would likely be the last thread I post to, but you guys are welcome to address LCD/Notebook questions to me if you'd like*

Yeah, last season was great, we made it to game 7 of the finals.
I was totally stoked, I have not followed any previous seasons as close as last one. Game 7 was fair and square, they pushed their luck far enough only being able to win home games. A very big contrast to the '92 game 7.

But someone still thought that a burning car would be a nice way to express themselves - Vancouver is kind of big on liberty of expression - and the rest is covered pretty well on YouTube.

I just want you guys to hear it from a local: I was at home watching the game and the live "Breaking News" for 5 hours after, the people who stayed around and participated in the "festivities" were NOT sports fans. Although they wore their blues, they gave no regard for sportsmanship and used the situation as a convenient excuse to have a "party of their life" at an expense of good fans' name.

I hope Canucks play well this season!
